Author's Notes-Just me experimenting with slash for the first time. I know the time that Willowpaw is an apprentice is a bit off, but otherwise the story wouldn't make sense.
It was due to a great tragedy within RiverClan that Willowpaw first met Leafpool. But to Willowpaw, being acquainted with the ThunderClan medicine cat was no tragedy. In fact, from Willowpaws' perspective, it was the exact opposite.
After she became apprenticed, Willowpaw still relived that first day when she met Leafpool. Leafpool, the brave. Leafpool, the amazing healer. Leafpool, with her sleek light brown tabby coat and her beautiful amber eyes. Those eyes had gazed at Willowpaw, with a warm smile to match. Willowpaw admired Leafpool greatly. No, she loved her.
Willowpaw wished that Leafpool was her mentor, instead of Mothwing. Mothwing didn't even believe in StarClan! At least she had those special moments with Leafpool in her dreams.
Willowpaw was excited as she suddenly remembered something. Tonight was the medicine cat meeting! And the sun was setting right at that moment. She retrieved a fat pigeon from the fresh-kill pile, and by the time she was finished with it, Mothwing beckoned for her to leave for the Moonpool.
When the two cats arrived, only Barkface and Littlecloud were there. This seemed strange to Willowpaw; Leafpool was usually there before Mothwing and herself. Willowpaw voiced her thoughts-"Where is Leafpool?" Barkface told her that Leafpool and Crowfeather had run away together, probably in love.
Willowpaw was infuriated. She loved Leafpool more than Crowfeather ever could. What Leafpool saw in Crowfeather, she didn't know. She had met Crowfeather at Gatherings before, and he was, to put it nicely, not pleasant. He was rude, snappy, and cold. Willowpaw hated the tom.
Her sign was from Spottedleaf, who told her that Leafpool was happier with Crowfeather. But Willowpaw barely listened. As soon as the meeting was over, Willowpaw stormed back to the RiverClan camp, far ahead of Mothwing. She went straight to sleep.
When she awoke the next day, Willowpaw immediately sensed that something was wrong. It was very early, so Willowpaw decided that she would slip out of camp. No cat would notice she was gone, and she would be back before they did.
For some reason, Willowpaw thought that the trouble was in ThunderClan. On her way to the camp, she came across a sycamore leaf. Willowpaw imagined it was Crowfeather, and enjoyed herself as she ripped it apart and shook it in her teeth. Then she dropped the leaf, an scolded herself for being so kit-like. She had left the camp to she what the trouble was, not to get imaginary revenge on Crowfeather.
She arrived at the edge of the camp. Willowpaw looked down and saw a horror-ThunderClan being attacked by badgers. She scanned the camp for dead warriors. There was one, Sootfur, blood trickling from a wound in his neck.
The ThunderClanners were losing the fight sorely. Willowpaw wanted to jump down and help, but she was rooted to the spot.
Suddenly, Willowpaw caught sight of two figures-Leafpool and Crowfeather. They were talking as they were battling. She tried to listen in on their conversation. Willowpaw heard that they were no longer together because Leafpool was a medicine cat.
As she watched the end of the battle, where WindClan attacked the badgers also, she was thinking about what she had heard. If Leafpool can't love because she's a medicine cat, Willowpaw thought. then maybe I shouldn't love, either. Maybe I should return to my true calling; the life of a medicine cat. She trotted back to the RiverClan camp.
