“You must run Magnoliafur! You must run far far away!”
“But how?”
“No cat here except your father wishes for your death. We will help you.”
“I cannot endanger your lives my friends.”
“Come with me, to ShadowClan’s border, an ally awaits us.”
“An ally?”
“Shh... just follow.” This conversation ended with two figures, there dark silhouettes just visible within the dark void of night in the camp. The two slipped away silently and carefully, there fur on end with tension.
When out of the camp they both ran as fast as they could, one followed the other.
“But why, run, so... fast?” Panted the smaller of the two.
“Save your breath, you will have more need to running when we are past the border. You father will follow us.”
“But how?”
The tom stopped, his fiery amber eyes burned into his charge’s. Could I tell her, what I have heard? That he is favored by the gods themselves? “No. I... do not know.”
The answer seemed cryptic to Magnoliafur, the young warrior followed the tom again as he set the same breakneck pace through ShadowClan territory.
Moonlight shimmered as two pale amber eyes flickered within the dark shadows. “Here we are then.” The tom, whose name was Flamefoot, stopped in his tracks, and Magnoliafur skidded to a halt beside him.
“But where-” Magnoliafur was cut short as a white and brown she-cat stepped out of the tree line. She hissed threateningly, hackles suddenly raised and teeth bared.
“Calm down Magnoliafur. Though your reflexes are impressive, there is no need to show them off right now. This is Moon, a friendly Loner, and an old friend of mine.”
Magnoliafur relaxed grudgingly and looked at Flamefoot, her confusion apparent in her eyes. To answer her questions, Flamefoot merely continued. “Like I said, your father wishes for your death, so it is not safe for you here in ShadowClan.”
“But ShadowClan is my ho-”
“Do not interrupt.” Flamefoot’s voice was commanding, the tom had been the former deputy of ShadowClan, and the control required in leading patrols had never left him.
Magnoliafur hung her head. “So Moon will be your guide, and you will live as a loner until it is safe for your return.” Magnoliafur snorted angrily.
“Do not complain Magnoliafur. Your father is powerful; to be sure, but there is something about you that scares him. I have instincts that are rarely wrong young’en. And I feel that you will be the downfall of your father. How is it that you are the only one able to challenge him? The icy grip he holds us in does not affect you Magnoliafur, but you are young yet. Make allies, gain wisdom and strength, and perhaps you can be the one to defeat your father.”
Magnoliafur felt awed by Flamefoot’s faith in her, and she nodded slowly. “I will do what you say Flamefur, you have been a father to me. One day, I promise you, I will return to ShadowClan, and rid us of the scourge they call my father.”
“We’d best to be getting’ goin' missus.” Trilled Moon, who had stayed silent and awed by the other two cats. Magnoliafur stared at Moon for a few moments, taking in the loner. Green eyes surveyed her new companion. They saw a creamy white pelt with brown spots and speckles, and warm, brown eyes. Moon had a curious, round sweet face, and her accent was faint and different from that of anything Magnoliafur had ever known.
Flamefur looked around restlessly, then hurried on his Clan mate and the loner. “Go now, and do not look back until sun high. Beware of your father.” Magnoliafur nodded curtly and looked at Moon, on signal the brown and white she-cat hurried off through the marshy tangle of bracken that covered this part of ShadowClan territory. Moon was obviously not used to marsh, her movements were loud and clumsy, and she looked back at Magnoliafur apologetically.
Haunting, pale blue eyes snapped open in the darkness of the leader’s den of ShadowClan. So the game had begun. Very well. Thought the black tom as he awoke from the dream. Games are not hard to win when you know every cheat.
