Chapter I I stretched, looking out on the camp. The three siblings, Slopepaw, Quarrypaw, and Geodepaw were looking excited. I thought it was time for their warrior ceremony. My notions were confirmed as Copperstar leaped up onto the Boulder along with them. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join beneath the Boulder for a Clan meeting." I felt my mother Mycabrook step up to join the Clan. "I, Copperstar, leader of RiverClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these apprentices." began Copperstar. "They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as warriors in their turn. Quarrypaw, Geodepaw, Slopepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?" "I do." meowed the apprentices in unison. "Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your warrior names. Slopepaw, from this moment on you shall be known as Slopefern. StarClan honors your swiftness and your courage. Geodepaw, from this moment on you shall be known as Geodepool. StarClan honors your strength and your courage. Quarrypaw, from this moment on you shall be known as Quarryrock. StarClan honors your cleverness and your courage." As the Clan did, I silently chanted Quarryrocks' name. Even though I was but one moon at the time, I hadn't forgotton how the tortoishell had saved me from an attacking ShadowClan warrior at the time of one of RiverClans' most gruesome battles. It was when our allience with the ShadowClan abruptly ended, and many warriors from both Clans joined StarClan. Alas, she couldn't save my brother Chervilkit. I watched and waited for Mycabrook to return to the nursery. As the cats left the clearing, Copperstar raised her voice. "Wait." she meowed simply. "There's more." At first I was confused. There were no other apprentices, and even Crispleaf, the oldest warrior of RiverClan, was far from retiring to the elders. "Twistingkit, Juncokit, come forward." I merely blinked at my ignorance. Of course. The brothers were six moons today. "This sunhigh, we gather together to name a new apprentice. From this day foward, until they have received their warrior name, these apprentices will be called Juncopaw and Twistingpaw. Shadedstone, you are among the most experienced cats in RiverClan. You just had experience with Geodepool, and he has grown into a strong warrior. Pass these onto Juncopaw. Foliageyes, you are ready for your first apprentice. Your mentor was Chaffinchwing, who had nobility and strength. Pass on the traits you learned from him onto Twistingpaw." Something else stared me in the face besides how I couldn't figure that out-I had to talk to Copperstar about whom I was to be apprenticed to. I wanted to be a medicine cat apprentice-even though the current medicine cat, Humidwind, was allegedly sent from the Dark Forest. I was to be an apprentice in three days. However I could, I had to get it out.

I could feel Juncopaws' eyes boring into me with jealousy. Foliageyes was the kindest cat in the Clan, and I was to be his first apprentice! Shadedstone, on the other paw, was almost as bad as Humidwind. And Humidwind...well, to put it mildly, you could definitly tell she was a descendant of Hawkfrost!
Anyway, Geodepool was a great cat when he began training. Funny, light-hearted, and generous, he was always the first one to bring a mouse to our den. Then, about a moon later, he stopped dropping in on us kits. A quarter moon into that fateful leaf-fall, I spotted him getting up for training. "Gee-odepaw," I mewed, a little kit at that time. "Why did you stop givin ush mish?"
"Me? Give a stupid kit like you mice?" snapped the tom. "You have got to be kidding me." Freespirit, my mom, lashed up angrily.
"Geodepaw!" she chided. "What's gotten into you?"
"Geez, Shadedstone has shown me a new way of life. Is that a problem."
"Just stay away from Twistingkit and Juncokit."
"And Starlingkit." muttered Juncokit softly. It was obvious that the two kits were in love with each other.
Oh no! Juncopaw with Shadedstone--! Juncopaw was quiet and considerate, and flinched at the slightest insult. What would he be like after training?
I passed the nursery on the way to the apprentices den. A small gray body lay out, miserably batting at a moth. It was Rushingkit, my best friend.
"Hey, you excited?" I meowed to Rushingkit, relating to the fact that she would join me as an apprentice tomorrow.
"Yeah. I guess so." she muttered.
"What's wrong?"
"I complained to Humidwind that I was having odd dreams and she dragged me to Copperstar and told him to make me her apprentice."

I was shaking in fear as Shadedstone loomed over me. "What?" she growled. "Are we going to fight or not?" "W-w-we ar-r-en't su-u-pposed to st-start until t-tomorrow." "Aren't supposed to? Well, since we aren't supposed to, doesn't mean we can't." I shook my head. What was I thinking? If I could get Shadedstone to go against Copperstars' will, I'd have a new mentor in no time! "Alright. Basic teeth grip." "Huh?" "You don't know what a teeth grip is? What a stupid kit!" I bristled and unsheathed my claws. "You don't know that I just started training five seconds ago? What a stupid mentor!" I mimicked. Shadestone growled. I swallowed my smirk as she leapt onto my back, her teeth digging into my ear. A chunk of it fell to the ground. I screamed in pain. I tried to scratch her, but she was like a fish, slipping out and pounding me each time. "Who are you calling stupid?" she hissed into my ear, or what I had left of it. "You,'' I whispered weakly. Shadedstone drew a gray paw and hit me. Hard. And everything faded into blackness. ..::;::.. "Wake up, kit." hissed a familiar voice. Humidwind. I was in the medicine cats' den. Sure enough, I opened my eyes, and there was that tabby face, smirking down at me. "Looks like a foxdung brain like you was idiotic enough to run into a fox, no?" "I didn't run into a fox!" I hissed. "Shadedstone attacked me!" "I knew I shouldn't've used that herb." muttered the she-cat. "Making him delirious." "I'm not delirious!" I spat. "Of course, we know who the medicine cat who hates apprentices would believe; a new apprentice or her trusted friend!" "I wouldn't fight in your condition." meowed Humidwind. "Look." Following her directions, I slowly turned my head downward. I gasped. My chest was no longer cream, but cream splotched withg ginger. Dried blood trickled out of my ear, and my tail was scarred. A long scratch down my back was still bleeding. "Shadedstone." I whispered. "You won't get away with this. Copperstar will know." Because Copperstar was my father, I knew he would trust me with his heart.

"Juncopaw?" I whispered softly into my future mates' bitten-off ear. "Juncopaw? What happened?" When the tom didn't arise, I frantically pushed my nose into his neck, careful not to hurt him. His eyes opened. "Starlingkit? Starlingkit, that you?" "Yes, my dear. What the heck happened?" "Shadedstone." "That's against the warrior code!" "I know." "Well, what are you going to do about it?" "You do know who my father is, Starlingkit." "Oh. Right. Copperstar." "Just I hope she isn't exiled." I stared at my friend in disbelief. "Why would you hope something mousebrained like that?" I exclaimed, sounding meaner than I meant to. (Chapter obviously not done )
