Rose looked down to earth. She saw the black night looming over the forst. She saw tall pines, their jagged, rough leaves rustling in the cold, night air. She saw WhiskerWind, a large tabby male in Riverclan, shift in his sleeping position in his nest in the warrior's den. The old starclanner sighed. Life was peacefull up in the stars, but she longed to be down there again, to tast the first glorying bite of rabbit, or fish;to play with the little kits in the sand along the river banks, to be with her beloves WhiskerWind again. That was the worst part. Bright appeared beside her. When a cat goes to starclan, they lose the last part of their name. Rose used to be called Rosethorn, a name which she preffered to Rose, so most cats called her that. ''You look troubled, RoseThorn.''Bright's breezy voice echoed. ''I wish i was down there.''rose said, hermongst the living.'' Bright tensed up. When he had first come to Starclan, he had felt that way too, untill he had met Rose. She was his addiction, his painkiller. ''Why?''he asked the pretty she-cat. ''We've-em,i mean you've, got everything you need up here! Why leave?'' Rosethorn shrugged. ''I don't know. It's just i feel such a feeling, a great amount of pain...Look.'' she pointed a paw down at where CrackleFire, a cunning little she-cat had snuggled up to WhiskerWind, who, having been separated from his mate for so long, had finally moved on from Rose. ''See?'' rose's anxious meow woke Bright from his thoughts. ''If i don't go down there, he'll ahve moved on-completely! He'll forget about me.'' Bright snorted. ''Who could ever forget about you? Besides, that she-cat's not a mark on you.'' Bright shuffled embarrasedly under Rose's suprised gaze. 'Well' she started. Bright hardly dared to believe, would she accept him? 'You'll help me get down there then?'' Bright tried, unsuccesfully, to hide his dissapointment. Yeah...one of the cats up here did it, once.''he said. ''Really?How!''Rose asked excitedly. Bright glared at her. ''How am i supposed to know?Go ask TwilightStar.'' he dissapeared, probably to skulk in his misery. 'Right.' muttered Rosethorn under her breath.'I'll do just that.''
TwilightStar was a tiny, deep blue cat, a tom, and he was the leader of Starclan. No-one knew how long he had been there, but some took a guess that he was born around the time of Sabre pride, the cats of the old ice. Rosethorn respectfully boed to the leader, and waited to be summoned. 'You do not have to bow to me, child,'' the old cat croaked. ''Now, what is it? Permission to select that Bright of yours as a mate?'' ''No, sir!''Rose said in suprise. ''Why would you think that?I've come to ask about l-leaving.' she couldn't keep the tremor out of her voice. 'Leaving?'the old cat echoed. 'But why?'' ''It's comlicated.'' '' I see. A tom?WhiskerWind?'' ''I -how did you know?'' The old cat smiled again. ''I know many things. Are you sure you want to leave?'' ''Yes.'' Rose nodded firmly. 'Well, a few things first. Number one, i can only let you go down for twelve hours, in which you must get someone to say'' i never want you to leave me''. Second, you will go there as a different cat, the same gender, yes, but completely different looks.'' ''Yes, i want to!''Rose said a little forcefully. ''Calm yourself, child. Don't you want to say good bye to anyone first?'' TwilightStar asked the young cat. ''No, it's best if i just leave quickly.'' ''Well, then, goodbye.'' Next thing she knew, Rose was standing in a clearing, her once white pelt turned to brown, and the breeze whirling around her saying ''Foxpelt is your name.... i miss you, rose...''Foxpelt, the old rose, turned to the sky and said '' i miss you too, Bright.''
