A cream colored she-cat balanced herself on a fence, grooming herself while basking in the sun. The blaze of the hot greenleaf sun heated the sand, and the cloudless sky was a bright blue.
"Good morning, Haylie!" Another she-cat leaped up onto the fence and sat next to Haylie. "Beautiful day, isn't it?"
"Sure," Haylie awnsered. "Princess, have you seen that black tom anywhere? He smells of far away lands with tall grasses and big trees."
Princess looked puzzled. "No. Aren't big trees just legends told by Feather? But who would beileve her? She's just a mad old clump of fur and bones."
"Is he handsome?"
"What?" Haylie stared at her friend. "Is he handsome?"
Princess nodded. "Yeah! He must be pretty important if you talk about him. You usually just let the things slip."
Haylie snorted. "Why don't you go see for yourself? He wondered into the Twoleg town."
Princess's eyes widened. "Oh no, I'm not going in there. That's where the wild cats live. And besides, my Twolegs would get so worried if I didn't return by sunset."
Haylie stood up and stretched. "I could care less about what Twolegs think."
The two heard a yowl from Princess's Twolegs, and the she-cat looked at her friend. "I'd best be going. See you later, Haylie!" She leaped down from the fence and rubbed against her Twoleg's leg, purring contently.
Haylie looked around boredly. Her usual day played in her mind: Wake up, Eat, Go Outside, Groom self, Talk to Princess, Take nap on fence, go back inside, eat again, watch Twolegs and think how idiotic they are, Play with Twolegs, stare out window until Moonhigh, go back to sleep.
She sighed. The she-cat longed for something new, and she had a pretty good idea she could find it on the other side of her fence. Haylie's paws itched to touch the soft, golden sand, to sleep in the shadow of a cactus, maybe hunt down a bird. But something stopped her, drawing her back into her yard and back inside.
Once she set her paw on the hard sand of her nest, her Twoleg scooped her up."Hello! Aww, how's my little Haylie? My 'ittle Haylie poo? Oh, you must be hungry! Here, let me get you some food."
Haylie mewed and scrambled out of her Twoleg's paws. "Uh, hey! Can you go hunt a bird and feed that to me? I mean, please don't give me that pellet stuff again.." Haylie groaned as she heard the tinkling of the dry pellets filled her bowl.
"There you go." Her Twoleg stroked her back before walking out of the kitchen.
Haylie stared at her bowl. "I would rather eat Princess." She tramped over to her bowl, crunching on the dry pellets. Once she was done, she made her way onto the softer sand and leaped onto a tall, soft boulder that was the color of a dried out cactus. She checked to make sure her Twoleg wasn't looking before unsheathing her claws and raking them down the soft boulder. She smiled as white balls of sand that stuffed the boulder tumbled out, and she kicked them into the air.
"Eugh! Haylie! What did you do?" Her Twoleg set her paws on her hips and stared at her cat.
Haylie shrunk to the ground before crawling away, through her cat flap and back outside.
"Hey, um, you! Do you know these sands well?"
Haylie looked up to see the black tom she had seen the day before peering over her fence. "Was it look like, Fleabag?"
The tom shuffled his paws. "Oh, then can you tell me which way to go to find water? I haven't found a single drop since I left WindClan."
"Wind what?" Haylie flitted a puzzled look onto her face.
Haylie shook her head. "Well, to awnser your question, I know where water is. Follow me."
"Oh, good." The tom leaped off the fence and back onto the sand.
Haylie leaped onto the fence. "Where are you going?" She snapped.
The tom thingyed his head. "What do you mean? You . . oh."
"Haylie? Who's that you're talking to?"
Haylie realized the voice as Princess's. "The cat I was telling you about."
Princess leaped into the other she-cat's yard. "Oh, hello." Her eyes glittered as she swept up the tom.
Haylie glared at her.
"I'm Crowfeather." Crowfeather smiled. "At least one of you is friendly."
Haylie growled. "I can be a lot meaner then this!" The she-cat marched back inside.
"Don't mind her," Princess advised. "I think she's just got a hairball stuck somewhere."
Crowfeather nodded. "I could tell!"
Princess rubbed herself against Crowfeather. "Do you want me to show you around?"
Crowfeather's eyes flashed with something Princess couldn't read. "Be my guest."
