Author's Notes: Dryclan is set in a desert area. There is few water sources, so the cats that live there have trained themselves in new ways to find liquid. From a young age, cats learn that the most important thing is water. Food comes second. One of the ways that the desert cats get water is to claw it out of cactus's. They can also lick the dew off of the grass and shrubs in the morning. There are a few pools of water in some places of the dessert, but not many. It is a hard life, but it can be rewarding. Dryclan has no enemies because of its location, so there are no borders to defend. They are extremely strong and hardy, and can survive any in any weather, except snow.
Beta's Notes: This is a great story, full of original settings, names, and plot. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
The story of DryClan's history is a tale that is told to the youngest kits of DryClan. It is a story about treachery and peace that has been twisted and tweaked a few times. Before DryClan lived in the desert, they lived in a lush green valley. A long cool river ran through the valley and brought fish and water to the cats that flourished there. In this old home, there were three clans; WaterfallClan the swift, RockClan the strong, and DryClan the brave. DryClan had always been a peaceful clan who respected the other clan's border's and warriors. But when Leanstar, the old clan leader died, a fierce new leader named Tearstar took over the clan. Tearstar robbed other territories of their food and didn't respect any border's. He had his warriors kill the prey for no reason so RocClan and WaterfallClan would die of hunger. At the next gathering at the river's widest banks, RockcClan and WaterfallClan banished DryClan to the desert. DryClan has been there ever since, and they know that someday, they will take their revenge.
Sunstar stretched and padded out of his den next to the Clanrock. He had been in his den for the last few minutes, trying to decide what Hotpaw's warrior name should be.
The cat was a skilled fighter who was very respectful and kind. Just the other day Sunstar had been watching him train and had decided it was time for his ceremony.
Hotpaw deserved it after rescuing Spottedfur's kit from an adder. The foolish kit had wanted to find some prey, so she thought that she would head out into the desert to find something. It was very fortunate that Hotpaw was nearby, looking for herbs to help Snakebite when he heard the kit mewling. The poor thing was sitting right in front of an adder's den and didn't even know it. Hotpaw snatched up Softkit and took her back to camp. Ever since then, Softkit has wanted to be a medicine cat apprentice. Snakebite needed all the help she could get, so Softkit had her spot reserved until she became an apprentice.
Sunstar had made his decision. He jumped lightly up onto the Clanrock and called out so every cat could hear, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, meet here beneath the highrock for a Clan meeting!"
Hotpaw padded up to the front of the Clanrock and stared at his leader. His mentor, Flamepelt, had told him just that morning that he was to become a warrior at sunset. He had been so excited, he yowled so loudly that he scared every piece of prey in the area. Flamepelt had laughed and joked that his warrior name should be Hotyowl.
Hotpaw loved Flamepelt. He was easy-going and loved to smile. He was quick like an adder, and sweet like cactus milk. Hotpaw was actually a bit sad that he wouldn't be spending so much time with him anymore. But he knew that he would be seeing him now as a fellow warrior, instead of an apprentice.
Lizardtounge padded out of the nursery. Adderkit tried to follow, but Goldenray pulled him back inside by his tail, making the kit scuffle in the dusty ground before resigning. Lizardtongue could feel her kits squirming in her belly. The kits were going to be born very soon, that's what Snakebite had told her. It was a good thing too. Softkit, Viperkit, and Grasskit were all leaving the nursery in a quarter moon to become apprentices. Without her kits, the nursery would be quite empty. Adderkit, who was only four moons, had yet to earn his ceremony. His mother, Goldenray, was very worried about him. He had been born deaf in his left ear, but he was still doing quite fine. In fact, he was keeping up with the older kits as well as any other cat would. He would make a fine warrior one day.
Sunstar glanced around the clearing. All the cats were gathering below the Clanrock. Scrubsand and Quakepaw had just returned from a successful hunt and were placing their prey on the fresh-kill pile. The two cats quickly padded up to the Clanrock and sat side by side to wait for their leader. What a Clan I have. Sunstar thought to himself with an invisible smile. I bet that RockClan and WaterfallClan would be trembling in their skins at the sight of my noble warriors.
Sunstar had been planning revenge on the other two clans since he had become deputy, many moons ago. He was not particularly a forceful cat, but desperate times called for desperate measures. He planned on taking back DryClan's rightful territory as soon as he could.
All of the Clan cat's eyes were on Sunstar. They were all loyal to DryClan, and put much trust in their leader. Most of the cats were aware of Sunstar's plan to take back DryClan's territory by the river. They saw no wrong in taking back what was rightfully their's.
This was especially true to the deputy, Crackleflame. She was a strong cat with muscles that rippled along her pelt when she walked. Sometimes, when there was no one around, Crackleflame would practice her fighting moves. She knew that Sunstar was planning a journey to the valley, and she wanted to be ready. She had tried many times to persuade him to have the apprentices and warriors learn to fight. Sunstar had mostly ignored her. But today would be different.
Sunstar waited and made sure that every cat was in the clearing and paying attention. After a moment's pause, he began. "Cats of DryClan, it is my honor to bring you one more warrior today. Hotpaw, please step forward. You have shown bravery and skill when you saved Softkit from that adder."
Sunstar paused for a moment to collect his thoughts before continuing. "I call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn. Hotpaw do you promise to follow the warrior code and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do."
"Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your warrior name. Hotpaw, from this day forth you will be known as Hotflight. DryClan welcomes you as a full warrior." Sunstar smiled as the apprentice beamed with pride. The cats in the clearing began to chant Hotflight's new name as he accepted congratulations from the many cats around him. This ceremony was especially emotional for Sunstar, as Hotflight was his only son. Sunstar waited until the cheering had died down before continuing. "Tonight you will stand guard as the rest of us sleep. You may not speak until you are relieved of your duties in the morning." Sunstar watched as Hotflight nodded and turned to move to his post.
"Before everyone goes back to their dens, I have another announcement." Sunstar meowed. Hotflight turned back to his leader and sat back down respectively. "As you all know by now, DryClan is preparing to reclaim our land in the valley. I do not believe we will have to fight, but in case we do, I would like us to be ready. All warriors and apprentices will be trained to fight by Crackleflame." Sunstar saw a wide smile creep across Crackleflame's face as he said this. "This meeting is over."
Sunstar leaped down from the Clanrock, and padded over to his den. It was going to be a long night. Sunstar was a lot closer to his son then most fathers were. He knew he would be up most of the night, worrying about his son's future.
Hotflight padded over to his spot of vigilance in the center of camp. It wasn't that the clan needed to be safe from enemy warriors, it just needed to be guarded from predators like snakes and cougars. Hotflight curled his tail around his paws. After the hot sun went down, the desert became cold like ice. It was going to be a long night.
