Arch prowled the forest cautiously, his eyes darting about trying to watch every movement that they could catch. He scented other cats nearby, but they wouldn't be able to smell him as he was downwind. Slowly and quietly, Arch crept forward until he could see the cats.
Enemies.
He gave an angry growl that was hardly audible. BrookClan was in his clan's, ValleyClan's, territory again.
ValleyClan had only gained this patch of land recently through a furious battle. Before, no cat had been allowed to enter, but no cat had liked that either. Yet now BrookClan was invading and sitting around idly as if it were their territory! Suddenly a head turned towards Arch, and saw him. Arch was rooted to the spot with anger, but the BrookClan cat gave a yowl and the gathering broke up. The cats pelted for their territory and Arch gave a meow of satisfaction.
"That'll keep them away for a while, knowing we know they're on our new territory," he whispered happily to himself. But just him knowing wasn't going to help anything, he should go tell his leader, Claw, right now. He checked again that there were no more BrookClan cats in sight, before disappearing back into the undergrowth.
When he was down in the valley that contained his home Arch was happy to see everything was going fine.
"Where's Claw?" he asked Daisy who happened to be passing by.
"Claw? Oh, he should be in his den," the she-cat replied and Arch dipped his head in thanks before padding off to the small cave in the wall of the valley.
"Claw? It's me, Arch!" he called as he stood outside the entrance.
"Come in, Arch," he heard Claw's deep meow come from inside. Arch entered the dark room, wondering how his leader could bare staying underground in the darkness all the time.
"What news do you bring?" Claw asked Arch, who now sat facing his leader.
"While I was out I saw BrookClan cats on our newly claimed territory. They showed no wariness at all, lounging about as if it were theirs!" Arch spat angrily, and Claw's eyes burned with anger that Arch couldn't see in the dark.
"How dare they?! This is almost a demand for war!" he yowled furiously and flexed his long claws.
"Should we go to their camp now, to attack them?" Arch asked, as deputy of ValleyClan he could lead the battle. What and honour that would be to him.
"No, not yet," Arch felt a wave of disappointment wash over him. "You, and you alone, can go to their camp and tell them that if they are seen in our territory again they shall pay!" Arch smiled again at Claw's command.
"Yes, Claw," he dipped his head in respect and padded outside, relieved to be able to see again. Daisy joined him outside the den,
"You look happy, what were you two talking about?" she mewed curiously.
"I'm going to BrookClan camp, they've been invading our territory again," Arch replied proudly. Daisy looked at Arch longingly so he knew what she wished to ask. "I'm sorry, you can't come." Daisy nodded in sad understanding then padded off to share tongues with a friend. Once again, Arch headed out of camp and up the winding path that lead to the top of the valley.
The sun was only just above the horizon and the sky was darkening when Arch finally arrived at the edge of BrookClan land. He took a deep breath, and stepped over the border.
He was in enemy territory now.
Nervous, as he had never been here alone before, Arch began to creep towards BrookClan cats. He sensed eyes watching him, did BrookClan know he would come.
Was it a trap?
Then the BrookClan leader appeared out of nowhere.
"Greeting, Arch," Creek growled. Arch looked around, now he was surrounded by enemies. How had they known he would come?
"Good evening, Creek," he replied nervously.
"Why, may I ask, are you here in our territory?" Creek asked menacingly.
"Why were YOU in OURS?" Arch retorted and Creek hissed.
"Just because you won a battle doesn't mean you can have that as your territory!"
"It's the code, it's the law! You agreed to it!" Arch spat angrily and un-sheathed his flashing claws.
"You think I agreed to it because I WANTED to? I did it because I was FORCED by your cruel leader! He threatened me! He wanted to kill me in cold blood!" Creek yowled and the BrookClan cats began to come closer.
"Coward!" was all Arch could say before a BrookClan cat pounced on him and they launched into a fight. Arch tore at the enemy's fur causing clumps to fly off when he felt a searing pain in his back. Another cat was on him! And another, and another!
"Please help me, O StarClan!" he prayed silently as he writhed under the weight of enemies. In the distance Arch could here Creek laughing evilly.
How could he do this? How could he break the law? How did he become leader? How did he even become part of BrookClan?!!
