The back tom settled into his post, his dark pelt molding into the shadows sweeping in around him.
A few minutes passed.
His jaws opened for a long, wide yawn; his muzzle taking in the chilly night air. Oh, how he longed to be sleeping, curled up near his brother and father, hear Cloudtail snoring loudly near Brightheart…. A twig snapped nearby. The tom’s ear instantly pricked out the sound, staying alert long enough to hear an extremely feminine voice complain.
The warrior’s guard lowered.
“Daisy…”
The former horseplace cat stumbled out from the bushes near dirt place. She must have wandered off to make her dirt before he took his post.
“Hello!” She murmured to him in strained cheerfulness, shaking one of her back paws. He assumed she stepped in something on her way out. The she-cat padded over to him. Her petite form seemed extremely frail to his long limbs.
“Go back to the nursery and hurry up about it.” He replied to her greeting. His eyes flickered back to scan the wood land. His sharp eyes cut sight of something moving about the tree limbs. It made almost inaudible scratching sounds as it moved about the bark. A squirrel, he concluded after a few moments.
Spiderleg turned to find Daisy still gazing at him; she hadn’t left her post at his side. The look in her soft eyes made something flutter in his limbs, a feeling he really wished he wasn’t having …And I thought you didn’t like kittypets?
“I said ‘go back to the nursery’ or are you deaf?” He asked, attempting to glare at the she-cat. The creamy colored cat looked stunned for a second before he facial features dropped. She was hurt by his words.
Spiderleg saw and a new feeling throbbed in his veins. He stumbled upon the word in his mind, ‘Guilt.’ It was something he never usually felt when he made a snide comment to anyone in his clan. He may have regretted the few he let slip to his mother and youngest siblings but, that was usually because of the tongue lashing he received from Dustpelt.
“Sleep well.” Daisy wasn’t even walking away when the murmur reached her ears. She gazed at him for a moment, watching his whiskers twitch with embarrassment. Spiderleg was an odd tom, she mused. He acted like he resented her for ever coming to Thunderclan at moments and at others, he was kind… well, kind in his own prickly way.
“Thank you.”
She swiped a tongue across the tom’s cheek before moving off through the barrier. Her long creamy tail brushed across his chest as she passed him. It was flirtatious and affectionate gesture.
For the third time that evening, Spiderleg was overtaken with emotion in his body. He didn’t understand this feeling but, he recognized it. It was the same kind of thing that every look his mother and father exchanged when talking in the nursery over Icekit and Foxkit was smothered in, the same look Brambleclaw would give to Squirrelflight or Firestar to Sandstorm…
With a snort, he shook his head and settled himself back into his duty. He attempted to ignore the cream colored fur and soft eyes that swept into his mind every time he closed his eyes for… well, the rest of the night at least.
