The Dark Forest is not a pleasant place to be, even for me. All the darkness, the filthy stench of moldy fungus, and the endless hunger and thirst that I feel here are things I despise. But I must learn to live with it. It suits me well on the outside, but inside I long to be back on the lakeshore where I belong, ruling the Clans as one. Yes, that's how I wanted things to be… all the cats under my rule, obeying all of my laws… that's how it should have been. If that mouse-brain Firestar hadn't gotten in the way, I would have brought the Clans to greatness. I would have cleansed them of all the plagues that are non-Clan cats. Yes… I would have saved them.
"Hello?" a wavering voice questioned into the darkness of the leader's den among the tree roots. "Hello?"
Sharp amber eyes glinted from the pitch blackness. "What is it?" a low voice snapped, glaring daggers into the scrawny warrior before him. He inhaled the scent of fox dung and mulch as the cat padded closer.
The pitiful black-and-white tom was shivering, his bones sticking out in every direction. His sharp shoulder blades were near his ears as he bowed his head low. "Are you the cat I'm supposed to speak to?" he muttered, his words slow and uncertain.
"Depends," Tigerstar growled, wrinkling his noise at the foul smell emanating from the lanky tom before him. "What do you want to speak about?"
Another violent shiver rushed down the cat's spine. "I'm Flash," the black-and-white tom mewed, his voice barely audible over the suddenly howling wind. "And I'm a rogue, just looking for a place to-"
Tigerstar didn't let the cat finish. He leaped onto all fours and folded his ears back menacingly. His fur bristled with anger as he snarled, "you're a rogue? Who let you past the border?" His eyes misted red with agitation as he stuck his face right up to the rogue's. "Who let you come here?"
Cowering under the wrath of Tigerstar's rancid breath, Flash warbled, "it was a big white tom with black paws… and a brown tabby with blue eyes. They told me to come straight here!"
Realizing what Blackfoot and Hawkfrost had meant, Tigerstar let an evil smile spread across his face. "Well, then, they sent you to the right place," he hissed. He unsheathed his claws and bared his teeth in a yowl as he brought his fury down upon the wayward rogue. There was a horrid snarling as he bashed Flash's head into the floor and shredded his neck, blood seeping onto the mossy floor of the den. Tigerstar sheathed his claws and let one paw rise to his mouth as he lapped the blood off of it.
"Filthy blood," he murmured, "such filthy blood." A soft chuckle. "Blackfoot? Hawkfrost? Are you out there?"
A white-furred face and a brown tabby face gazed below the tree roots, their eyes shining. "Yes, Tigerstar?" Blackfoot queried, knowing he had done his leader well.
Tigerstar's eyes looked up at them through the roots. "Very good work," he mewed. "But next time, don't even let the rogues get past the border on any side. This is my territory. Only pure-blooded Clan cats can pass here." He smirked again. "All others… will die."
"Tigerstar, forgive me, please!" the young she-cat wailed. "I didn’t mean for this to happen to me!"
The brown tabby turned on her suddenly, the shadows around the oaks turning his pelt an ebony color. "Of course you meant to!" he snapped. "Or else you wouldn't have mated with that stupid rogue!" He seemed to be foaming at the mouth with rage. "What are the laws in the forest, Duskflower? WHAT ARE THEY?" His voice rose into a shout and the dark grey she-cat shriveled under the leader's gaze.
"I'm not to take a mate with a rogue or kittypet," she stated as bravely as she could, her eyes shut tight as she waited for an impact. "I'm not to have kits that are… impure." She spat out the last word disgracefully.
"That's right," Tigerstar snarled, his tail lashing. His eyes grew red and angry. "But you didn't follow those laws, did you, Duskflower?"
Duskflower's muscles tensed and her ears flicked. "N-n-no, Tigerstar, I didn't. But please-"
Tigerstar cut her off. "Please fixes nothing! It's only a word." He unsheathed his claws. "Duskflower, the sight of you tires me." The tabby raised a single paw and sent it through the air, reaching and nearly crushing the she-cat's skull before she could inhale enough to scream. He took both paws and raked at her belly, letting the blood flow like an endless river around his paws. He drank in the scent as if it were as precious as water, and then he stooped his head to drink it tentatively. "The unborn blood…" he murmured, "that's the best kind." He raised his head and looked around before simply walking off into the night, leaving the shadowy form of the mangled she-cat and a trail of blood-red pawprints behind him.
I would never let anything pass me by. A perfect Clan cannot be contaminated, even if it means killing off countless cats. I don't mind. It's all part of my plan. My plan to rule the greatest Clan in the history of the Clans. Only the most loyal cats would follow me, and at that point I could separate the true Clan cats from the cowards and the traitors. My sons would rule under me, taking over my spot when I was gone. But I would never die. My nine lives would never waste away to injury, sickness, or even old age. I would be immortal.
If only things were different. If only Firestar hadn't joined the Clan so many moons ago and foiled all my plans. Damn him. Damn them all. Firestar doesn't deserve to be a leader, no matter what Clan he's leading. And if I could go back to life and right all the wrongs in the Clans, I would do so efficiently.
And Firestar would be the first one I killed.
