Prologue
It was a normal evening, the stars were shining bright above the moors and trees that made up most of CloudClan's territory. The moon hung brighter than all the stars in the sky, though it wasn't full, it was still a beautiful sight at the least. If you were up in the cloudless skies, however, that was a different story, for up there was a whole other problem no living cat knew about. They were gathered at their usual spot for meetings, however barely any cats were there, mostly past leaders and medicine cats for the Clan who were specially chosen to show up for this unfortunate meeting. A she-cat, whose fur was as golden as the sun itself with the brightest stars in it, walked towards her spot, an urgent look in her amber eyes as she glanced around warily. "A little on edge, eh Goldentail?" The voice was masculine, very deep and a little frightening in some ways, but to this she-cat she could tell that there was a hint of pride and worry in his tone. "Yes, more than usual Cloudstar," she meowed, turning to look at the broad shouldered tom who stood behind her. His pelt was short, a dark gray nearly all over till you got to his paws, then it was white, also with stars all around his form. The tom, the first ever leader and founder of CloudClan, sat down next to his old medicine cat and sighed, tail tip twitching nervously. "Thornstar has something else to worry about now," he mewed sadly, the bright fire that was normally in his amber eyes had died when he had learned of what was to come to this, his former Clan. "I would never think, he of all warriors...but Thornstar must find this out for himself no? What worries me is who has to help the Clan through this matter." "Do you doubt my word as a medicine cat? I said that she would do this, and she has to, it is her destiny to be something and do something great for her Clan, apprentice or not," Goldentail hissed through gritted teeth. Suddenly another body stood to address the two cats, "Cloudstar, what are you going to tell Thornstar? Surely you can't come right out and tell him who will do this?" Asked a tom, his dark tabby pelt blending it well with the darkened forest behind him, blending him well. Cloudstar glanced at the tom; he had never felt as weak as now, so useless to his Clan and the generation that now inhabited it. "Don't worry Barkclaw, I will give him the prophecy that Goldentail has. Dark smoke shall decend upon the Clan from the fire of battle, only the golden fern can save the clouds." As soon as Cloudstar had finished all of the gathered cats clearly understood the message, and some were obviously not happy about who it spoke of. "Are we really suppose to trust our Clan in the paws of such a young cat?" One leader spoke out, clearly untrusting. "Are we sure she is the one?" "Why her?" "She is so young, is she ready for such a responsibility?" Cloudstar and Goldentail instantly silenced them all with a hiss, "She is the one StarClan spoke of, so shall she be the one to help our Clan through the troubling times to come!" They both yowled in unison, glaring at most of the cats who had spoken out. "Until the time of darkness lifts, she is their light, she is their sun and the cat that will guide them through their rough times, until we reach another obstical, this meeting is over," Goldentail meowed with a lash of her tail, and all of the starry warriors padded off to discuss the new prophecy and their Clan's chosen cat.

Chapter 1
The sunlight was clear and beautiful, making the fields of grass in front of her a golden path. Her amber eyes lit up as she spotted a rabbit a little ways off, clearly it hadn't spotted her yet, "Good," she hissed quietly to herself in satisfaction. The golden tabby she-cat stalked through the grass, blending in like just another clump she carefully stepped on. Her tail was low, but not dragging on the ground, and her eyes were trained on the large prey before her, Now is my chance! She pounced! The rabbit was not even a mousetail away when something prodded her in the side. The she-cat's eyes flew open instantly and she nearly yowled out in anger, her eyes alight with fire now, "What did you do that for Hawkpaw?" She hissed irritably. The cat standing over her was a dark tabby tom, his own amber eyes seemed to be grinning as he looked down on the she-cat, one of his paws jabbing her in the side, trying to wake her up. Unfortunately, he succeeded. "Hey Brackenpaw!" He meowed, cheerfully as always, "Now that you're up maybe Wavepelt and Lionpelt can take us hunting together, or maybe battle training! No wait, maybe a border patrol," the words just kept flying from Hawkpaw's mouth, uncontrolled and without ceasing. "Hawkpaw!" Brackenpaw snapped. Annoyance by his always cheerfull behavoir wasn't the problem this time, now it was the fact that he had woken her up from one of her more pleasant dreams and now she wasn't in the mood to deal with his constant talking. "Maybe, maybe not, who cares about border patrols anyway? Nothing ever goes on around here, our Clan is isolated and I doubt any other Clan's live nearby, much less know about the warrior code." It was Hawkpaw's turn to be sad now, though he didn't show it, inside he was actually hurt by Brackenpaw's tone towards him. But, as soon as she had mentioned nothing going on at the borders, a thought struck the apprentice, "Wait," he mewed with a shake of her head, "that's not true, Wavepelt was talking to me about it, she said that rogues have been scented coming into the territory!" He meowed excitedly. Brackenpaw's whiskers twitched in slight disbelief, for Hawkpaw had been known to say just about anything to her so that they may get the chance to be grouped together for training. I wouldn't mind that as much if he wasn't so annoying...She thought with a glare. She opened her mouth to reply harshly when a tail hit her face, she was just about ready to claw Hawkpaw's ears off when she realized it wasn't Hawkpaw who had hit her, but Thistlepaw! "It's true," he meowed in a bored tone, like he always did, "I was on the patrol that scented them, it seems they have no clue what a Clan or border marking's mean, that means they must be new to the world outside of our territory," Thistlepaw sighed with what appeared to be a shrug. "Really?" Brackenpaw mewed now. Thistlepaw, she knew, didn't make stories up, but he never really talked to any cat since his mother died in a little skirmish with a badger...he seemed down on himself all the time, but he never really did anything that would be considered lying. Suddenly, a yowl rang out through the clearing, it made the hairs of all three apprentices stand on end and made them all rush out to see what was going on, even the lazy Thistlepaw. There, in the entrance to the camp, stood Berryfur, his cream colored pelt slightly noticable with all of the blood clotting his fur. The warriors eyes were wide with shock and disbelief, and finally, he moved aside so that the Clan could see what he was so shaken up about. There, right behind him, lay a gray-blue she-cat...her gaze blank and mouth open, like she herself was trying to yowl out. Bluepelt was dead.

Chapter 2
It was quiet for only a moment before the whole Clan exploded into frightened and hostile mews. The queens nestled their kits closer, the warriors all mentioned one thing, to fight, while the rest of the Clan just tried to figure out something to do with themselves. Brackenpaw stood motionless, her eyes locked onto Bluepelt's glazed ones before a yowl snapped her back to her senses. She recognized it instantly, and sadness wrapped itself around her like a cold leaf-bare wind. "Bluepelt!" It was a tom obviously, one who was extremely close to the she-cat and one that was struck by her death the hardest. "Bluepelt, please StarClan no!" Screeched the ginger tomcat, his green eyes pained and sad. "Poor Rowanpaw..." Hawkpaw mewed, his dark tabby fur on end and tail tip touching the ground. "Bluepelt was his mentor after all, the effect of her death will definantly hit him the hardest," Hawkpaw continued sadly, and unfortunately for him a bit too loudly. "Shut up Hawkpaw!" Snapped a she-cat, Blackpaw by the look of it, Rowanpaw's sister, "You don't know what it is like to loose a mentor, Rowanpaw doesn't need your sympathy or any of the Clan's! All you can say is 'Poor Rowanpaw' but you have no idea what it's like to loose a mentor and until you do keep your mouth shut!" The black she-cat went on furiously as she padded over to her brother who continued to call out his mentor's name, even though it was useless. Hawkpaw had shut up indeed, but not for long because he soon turned to Brackenpaw, about to say something, when Thistlepaw slapped his tail over the tomcat's mouth. "Don't say a word, got it?" Meowed Thistlepaw. Even though he had rushed out of the den to see what was going on, amazingly to Brackenpaw, he still had that same bored expression on his face, as if he could care less that Bluepelt was dead. The blue-gray tom's amber eyes looked like they always had since he had become an apprentice, at least that's what Brackenpaw thought, and she couldn't help but glare at the tom. "At least Hawkpaw attempted to sympathize, all you do is stand there with your same cold look like you don't even care!" Brackenpaw snapped at him, but before she, or him, could get a word out, a yowl rang throughout the clearing, powerful and loud. "CloudClan!" The voice said, and immediately everyone in the Clan knew that Thornstar had come out from his den in one of the old rabbit warrens and was now speaking to them from the High Hill. "Gather around!" He called. All of the Clan, except for Rowanpaw, who wanted to stay by his mentor's side, and Blackpaw, who couldn't leave Rowanpaw's, gathered to hear what Thornstar would say. All of their faces were grim, eyes were saddened and hearts were broken as they had all come to learn of Bluepelt's death, though not how she was killed. "Berryfur has told me that Bluepelt was killed!" Thornstar announced sadly, for any leader didn't wish to see one of their warriors killed before they were able to become elders. "He also says that a group of rogues did this, rogues who have been scented coming into the territory. Unfortunately, this has been going on for over a moon, and although I have put up with it I am refusing to do so now," he meowed loudly. Suddenly the Clan burst into activity again, warriors were calling for battle while queens were fretting over the saftey of their kits. "Silence!" Wavepelt, the Clan deputy, called from her place below the High Hill. All of the Clan immediately became quiet at the sound of her powerful and threatening voice, and as she motioned for her leader to continue she kept a watchful eye on the camp's entrance. Thornstar dipped his head in thanks, though he looked slightly annoyed; Brackenpaw assumed that he didn't like to show weakness, and that when Wavepelt silenced the Clan before he could that showed it. "I don't like the idea of it, but we are going to have to deal with this threat immediately and without fail. Bluepelt's death is an ominious message that these rogues are here and they want to stay." He continued. Suddenly, Smokefur, Blackpaw's mentor, stood up in the throng of cats. His cold gaze swooped around them all and landed on his leader before he began to speak. "Thornstar," he called respectfully, "I know that you are upset by Bluepelt's death...but can't we try to resolve the conflict by sending out a party to ask these rogues to leave? If they do not cooperate or end up fighting, then I'll fight with our Clan to get them off of our territory, but why risk our warriors if there is a chance to solve this peacefully?" He asked. Brackenpaw was surprised, and so was Blackpaw by the look on her face. Brackenpaw had never heard Smokefur talk so...so much like a senior warrior before. She had thought that he was a cold and unfeeling cat, one that enjoyed fights and complained about peace, but what he was saying now actually made a little bit of since, but how can there be a chance at peace if they had killed off one of their warriors already? Thornstar glared at Smokefur for a moment, his amber gaze moving from cat to cat till they landed on Brackenpaw. For a moment, Brackenpaw thought she saw something in his amber eyes, some sign of hope and dread mixed with worry...and that only made her uneasy as he quickly moved on. "That may be true, but how can we make peace if they have already killed one of our own?" He asked a bit more fiercly than he intended. He didn't give Smokefur enough time to answer before he glanced at ever cat, "What do you all think? Should we give Smokefur's plan a try and see if peace is accomplishable? Or shall we go along with mine and Wavepelt's plan and attempt to force them out of our territory?" He asked. The Clan took a while to deliberate amongst themselves, and most sounded like they wanted to go along with their leader's plan instead of the cold Smokefur's. Suddenly, the dark gray tom shook his head and called up to Thornstar, "They may have felt threatened by our warriors, who knows, Bluepelt had a hot temper and she could have easily tried to kill or harm them without hearing them out? But, if we can solve this without senseless bloodshed then maybe our Clan can continue to live here with it's remaining warriors instead of living her without some of them," he meowed. Brackenpaw was still in shock with Smokefur's reasoning when most of the Clan sent up their call to their leader, and it was one that Brackenpaw wasn't ready or hadn't expected. "We want to try and do this peacefully, if there is a chance that we can all keep living instead of some of us then we want to keep it that way!" Meowed some of the warriors while other's echoed their thoughts. Brackenpaw, Hawkpaw, Blackpaw, and Rowanpaw all looked shocked, especially Rowanpaw since he wanted revenge, but Thistlepaw continued to just stare at his leader, as though...analyzing his reaction. Thornstar gave one last look at Smokefur with something in his eyes when he turned to the rest of the Clan, "Fine, then Smokefur will gather some warriors and head out immediately, but if peace is in fact unachievable and some of our warriors don't come back...just remember that you took Smokefur's plan." He yowled before jumping off and heading back into his den, Wavepelt following closely behind.

Chapter 3
Smokefur watched his leader and deputy go, heads down as they talked with one another, and he continued to watch until the two vanished in the darkness of the warren. Soon warriors crowded the dark gray tom, most had one question on their mind: why would we want to show them mercy if they had killed Bluepelt? Others wondered if they could go with Smokefur, mostly those who were friends of his since apprenticeship. Brackenpaw stared in amazement, since when had Smokefur gained so much popularity within the Clan? Surely it hadn't have been just now, even with that little persuasive speech there was no way he could have almost the whole Clan gathered about him wanting to go! Thoughts racked through her brain when all of a sudden a blue-gray shape blocked her view of the dark gray warrior, and she immediately knew who it was. "What do you want, Thistlepaw?" She asked irritably, as he stared at her with his bored expression. "What you said earlier, about Hawkpaw showing sympathy while I just stood there like I didn't care?" He asked, tone harshing up a little bit as he mentioned the earlier incident before Thornstar and Smokefur had made their arguements to the Clan. Brackenpaw gasped for a minute as she recalled the scene in her head, but then her look hardened and she stared at him seriously, "Yes I remember, and was I wrong? You did just stand there and stare at her dead body boredly without even saying anything to comfort Rowanpaw, unlike Hawkpaw who did!" Hawkpaw was beside Brackenpaw now, he placed his tail on her shoulder in an attempt to calm her down, but she was still focused on Thistlepaw's still bored tone. "That's because I know better," Thistlepaw meowed calmly as he looked forward, but still barred Brackenpaw's path. The tabby she-cat was about to snap at him but he slapped her mouth with his tail, once again, so that he could continue. "I know better because I know the death of someone I loved too, and no matter how much sympathy or comfort a cat gets it won't bring the dead back to life or let them show up in their dreams like your a medicine cat," the blue-gray tomcat meowed quietly as he looked at the ground. Brackenpaw stood wide eyed, mouth open like a mousebrain as she took in what he said. That was right, Thistlepaw had lost his mother not even two moons ago, and he would still be recovering from it...so this mustn't be new to him, he had already seen the death of his mother, so this must not have affected him that much. Brackenpaw didn't know that pain, it was just like Blackpaw said, until they lost someone like a mentor or their parents or kin, they would never truely understand. She would never truely understand Rowanpaw's pain nor Thistlepaw's. She looked down and sighed, "I'm sorry, I had no right to go an-" "It's fine," was all Thistlepaw said when he interrupted her apology, which although it irritated her a bit she couldn't even talk back with the thought of Thistlepaw's pain in her heart. Soon there was a yowl throughout the clearing as Smokefur stood at the camp entrance with Scorchfur and Grayfoot, two capable and very strong warriors within CloudClan, all had a serious look in their eyes as they gave a flick of their tails to signal there goodbye as they headed out for their seemingly impossible mission. Brackenpaw wondered why Smokefur had only chosen two though, since the rogue group had already killed Bluepelt she didn't think it was all that safe that he only took two warriors, no matter how fit and ready to fight they were. Suddenly a golden tail was on her shoulder before she could move a muscle and she looked up to see Lionpelt's blazing amber eyes which were calm and calculating, "Now, I was going to take you training but with this rogue business we'll have to wait until Smokefur and the other's get back, so go rest with the other apprentices for a bit, I'm sure your minds will calm when you dream of catching mouse after mouse in your dreams!" He meowed with a twitch of his whiskers before stalking off towards the other warriors gathered in a small session. "I guess I have no choice," Brackenpaw meowed grudgingly before padding over to the apprentices den where Thistlepaw and the other's were already dozing peacefully, as though Bluepelt's death hadn't happened, "But it did..." she mewed pitifully before resting in her nest of rabbit fur and twigs, drifting off into an unpeaceful sleep.

Chapter 4
The cold nighttime air woke Brackenpaw with a start, she had dozed off a little too long and now it appeared to be near time for all the warriors to turn in, Shouldn't Lionpelt have woken me up? I'm sure that Smokefur and the others should have returned by now... Brackenpaw's thoughts were slow, she was a bit groggy from getting too much sleep but that didn't matter now, all the mattered was what had happened to the small peace-keeping patrol that the newely recognized Smokefur had led. The moon was up already, almost near the midnight mark, and as Brackenpaw stepped into the camp clearing she halted with surprise as she saw nearly all of the Clan up and mewing to each other. "But I thought they had already returned..." Brackenpaw mumbled in confusion. Suddenly there was a figure at her side and she glanced over to see Thistlepaw staring calmly at the mass of cats who appeared to be fretting, "Thistlepaw..." She began a little nervously, knowing that given the opportunity he would bring up the incident dealing with the death of his mom or Bluepelt. "It's fine Brackenpaw," Thistlepaw mewed with a sigh as he gave her one glance with his bored amber eyes, "Just don't mention it again ok?" He asked, though he didn't wait for an answer before padding over to the group of cats and settling down beside Eaglefeather, his mentor. They both looked at the scene calmly, their mouths opening once or twice to exchange a comment or a greeting perhaps before they were totally still, simply watching the Clan fret. "What an odd pairing, though it seems a bit fitting," Brackenpaw mewed with a slight mew of laughter before settling herself down next to a shrub to continue watching. "What if they were killed?!" A she-cat suddenly wailed terribly, it was a queen, Gorseclaw by the look of it; instantly she wrapped her tail around her three kits, Mothkit, Maplekit, and Sootkit, as though trying to protect them. "Don't worry mom!" Sootkit mewed suddenly, squirming his way out of her protecting tail, "I'll protect you because some day I'm going to be leader of CloudClan and I'll need to be strong for that," he mewed with a twitch of his whiskers. "Us too! Us too!" Mothkit and Maplekit meowed in unison, as they always did, the two sisters were seemingly inseprable and as they turned to grin at each other Sootkit jumped in front of them. "Sootstar! That sounds like a good name!" He mewed with a lash of his tail, as if to show of his power. Suddenly Thornstar and Wavepelt stood at the end of Thornstar's den, watching the Clan with slightly amused amber eyes. "Looks like a certain kit wants your position Thornstar," Wavepelt meowed seriously, though they was a tad bit of humor in her tone, but no cat would ever really pick it up from the overly-serious deputy. Thornstar chuckled as he sat down and wrapped his tail around his paws, "Well he'll have to wait a while, I still have a good amount of lives left on me," Thornstar responded with a nod at the now embarrassed Sootkit. Suddenly there was the sound of pawsteps and a hiss from the camp entrance. Instantly the warriors got in front of the three queens and their kits, the apprentices took up defensive positions behind the warriors and Thornstar and Wavepelt were both on their paws. The Clan stood in silence, fur raised and claws unsheathed, If these rogues are stupid enough to come here I'd like to see them get through us! Brackenpaw thought as she bared her teeth. The only cats that were calm were Thistlepaw and Eaglefeather, both of which hadn't left their relaxed positions. Are they mousebrained?! What if this is the enemy! Suddenly the hissing stopped and the Clan tensed, ready to defend their home till the end, suddenly four shadows appeared in the entrance, Eaglefeather was the only one who dared to speak at a moment like this, "It seems that there was one unexpected guest among our patrol..." She mewed seriously. "Yes, I guess I got it wrong, forgive me Eaglefeather," Thistlepaw mewed boredly as he dipped his head in apology to his mentor, which didn't do a thing but whisper something into his ear before they both gave a nod to one another, still completely relaxed. Brackenpaw's gaze switched to the entrance as they heard grass being crushed underneath paw, she tensed and then, there in front of the group of warriors and apprentices ready to give their life for their home, stood Smokefur, Grayfoot, and Scorchfur, and behind them an incredibly slim white and black tomcat, an unexpected guest indeed.

Chapter 5
The Clan was shocked for a moment, and now Thornstar and Wavepelt reacted very nerve-rackingly. "Smokefur!" Thornstar snarled as he lept in front of his warriors, ignoring their warning calls for not getting too close to the unknown cat, "How dare you, I send you out on a mission and you actually bring back one of their cats? Don't tell me you are betraying us and StarClan?!" The dark tabby snarled angrily as he took a step forward, claws unsheathed. Smokefur stood quietly for a moment, ears back with a look of shock before recovering and taking a step forward himself, head bowed with respect, "Thornstar, I dare not betray my birth Clan, nor my ancestors in StarClan," he began respectfully. Thornstar was about to say something when Smokefur raised his head and tail as a signal to stop, Brackenpaw nearly fell over from this act, Smokefur looked like a strong and commanding leader as he did this movement, and to the leader himself! "As I was going to say, this is the leader of the rogue group of which had killed Bluepelt," a few hisses broke the brief silence but the dark gray warrior carried on, "He would like to speak to our leader, he hasn't told me of what but I'm sure he will do no harm when he is alone." Thornstar was staring very hard at Smokefur, as though he were trying to make out if the warrior's story was the truth or not, but he could not argue that the cat could barely put up a fight with him considering he had more than one life and that Wavepelt would be with him. "Very well," Thornstar conceded, raising his tail like Smokefur had done to silence the coming bursts of disbelief, "I cannot argue that he is here not as a threat, we may speak, come with me to my den, you too Wavepelt." The black she-cat nodded, although you could tell she wasn't happy in the least about Thornstar's decision she could not go against her leader, and she silently walked at his side, claws still unsheathed. As the group of three walked into the den all of the warriors started crowding Smokefur, most with hisses and snarls of anger, and some with curiosity, while the ever quiet Eaglefeather and Thistlepaw simply walked past the large group. "Where are you going?" Hawkpaw meowed, jumping in front of Thistlepaw to stop him, a smug look on the much larger dark tabby tomcat. Thistlepaw glanced once at him, then at his mentor and as she nodded Thistlepaw let out a sigh and with movement as almost as fast as a dashing hare Thistlepaw had tripped and pinned the stunned Hawkpaw on the ground. "Wha-" He managed to choke out before Thistlepaw let him go and continued on his way. Brackenpaw gave him a look and he halted with another sigh, she could hear Hawkpaw saying to watch out but she already knew. Tensing, readying herself for his oncomming attack, she faltered when he just continued looking at her, "Battle training," he meowed simply before he and his mentor walked out of camp together. "Hey, no fair, he attacked me but not you?!" Hawkpaw complained as he came up to Brackenpaw, nudging her forcefully to look at him and not the place where the odd apprentice and mentor had vanished. "Well, I didn't get in his way you know," she pointed out with a mew of laughter as Hawkpaw's fur fluffed up in embarrassment. Surely the much larger tom would be embarrassed being taken out but such a small, boring, and even lazy apprentice. Though he didn't really seem all that lazy if he could pull a move off that would even surprise Hawkpaw...Brackenpaw thought as she unconciously headed towards the leader's den. "What are you doing?!" Hawkpaw hissed quietly to her as they made their way through the shadows of the camp, most of the warriors had returned to the dens by now, all except a couple of inquiring apprentices and Smokefur's patrol, Probably are going to see that mangepelt off. She halted when Hawkpaw put his tail on her shoulder, just in time too because they had reached a spot where they could hear the leader and newcommer talking, though faintly. "So...Talon was it?" Brackenpaw could barely hear Thornstar's voice as he spoke seriously with the uninvited cat, a slight hint of a snarl at the end of his words. It was clear that he didn't enjoy talking to a cat that Smokefur had brought without request or order. "Yes, Talon is what I am called," the mysterious tom meowed calmly despite Wavepelt and Thornstar's tense attitude and the uncomfortable atmosphere. Brackenpaw was nearly swept off of her paws as she heard this tom's voice, it wasn't that it was blood-chilling or harsh, but it was slightly deep and young voice. Why he can't be any older than Berryfur! She thought, astonished, after all Berryfur was one of their newest warriors, a tom of only 23 moons old. "What do you want with our territory? And what excuse do you have for killing one of my warriors?!" Thornstar asked, or more like snarled, forgetting to control his temper in the face of the cat responsible for the death of one of his beloved warriors. Wavepelt, from what Brackenpaw could hear, was shuffling around the den, no doubt trying to stop Thornstar from leaping at Talon's throat. Brackenpaw was astounded, more so from what Talon didn't say rather than Thornstar's quick temper change. Suddenly she could hear the mysterious black and white tom licking his chops before continueing, "Forgive us, we didn't wish to kill her, but she said we were stealing prey and then attacked, my own...what did you say, warriors? Yes, mine own kin reacted purely on instinct rather than what we normally do in the face of unknown cats," Talon meowed, still completely calm from what Brackenpaw could tell. "That no good lier!" Brackenpaw could hear Hawkpaw hiss quietly as he dug his claws into the earth beside her, "Yeah right, purely on instinct, what kind of words is he using to weasel out of the situation?!" He nearly yowled. Before she could reply to Hawkpaw to keep his voice down, Thornstar suddenly had Wavepelt exit the den for a bit to "fetch this cat some prey." What is he thinking?! What if this strange cat attacked before she got back? Well he does have more lives and is a good fighter, and besides, Hawkpaw and I will help if anything goes wrong, Brackenpaw thought as she tensed, ready to rush in to help her leader if need be. She felt Hawkpaw do the same, smiling inwardly as she knew they were thinking the same thing. But they both faltered, nearly falling onto their underbellies as Thornstar said something so unexpected that the two of them thought they had gone to StarClan and back. "So, how are you brother?"

Chapter 6
Brackenpaw felt as if dogs had just rushed into camp and ripped her Clan to shreds. Her amber eyes were fixated on the ground in front of her paws, whiskers trembling with the shock of what she had heard come from her leader's mouth, trying not to believe his words. "What does he mean 'brother'!?" She could hear Hawkpaw snarl angrily, tail fluffing up to twice it's normal size as he tried to make sense of the situation too but both not coming to any reasonable conclusion. Suddenly the conversation continued as Talon responded with an "oh I've been fine, and I really am sorry about what we did to your warrior." Brackenpaw could hardly believe what she was hearing, but kept as cool as possible and tried to focus all her attention on what her leader was saying to his 'brother.' Suddenly Wavepelt entered the den again with a rather nice smelling mouse and from what both Brackenpaw and Hawkpaw could hear she had none too pleasantly dropped it in front of Talon with a sniff of disdain. The three talked with each other for a little longer before she and Hawkpaw could hear them beginning to make their way out of the den. Before they could move to get a safe distance away a cat pulled her by the scruff of the neck, and she glanced sideways just in time to see a flash of blue-gray fur do the same to Hawkpaw. "What in the name of StarClan was that for?!" Hissed the large tabby apprentice as he rounded on Thistlepaw, ready to cuff him for doing that so suddenly. She was about to respond too when he slapped their mouth's with his tail for silence, his bored amber gaze shifting towards where Thornstar, Talon, and Wavepelt were exitting the den, only then did Brackenpaw and Hawkpaw realize that Thistlepaw had saved them from being discovered, though just barely. When the group of apprentices finally came out of their hiding place Hawkpaw whirled around and glared angrily at Thistlepaw, tail tip twitching in annoyance at how calm and rather uninterested he looked. "Tch, you heard the conversation too right? How can you be so calm after hearing that our leader might be just a filthy rogue or loner!?" Hawkpaw snarled at him, taking a step froward. Thistlepaw stood his ground though, making no attempt to show any signs of hostility or fear in front of the much bigger apprentice, "Well, I am just thinking of how the two of them are related, and if Talon had chosen to leave CloudClan and live as a rogue instead of the other way around in which Thornstar had come here," he mewed with a sigh. "Obviously whoever was in charge of CloudClan before wouldn't have wanted a rogue or loner living in the Clan, we hadn't accepted one in ages too, so why should Thornstar be any different?" Brackenpaw stared hard at Thistlepaw, wondering why he sounded so wise when he was just her age. Before she could respond Hawkpaw suddenly nudged her away, and she took her gaze off of the blue-gray apprentice to stare at Hawkpaw angrily, "What are you doing?" She hissed. Hawkpaw stopped and folded his ears back as he glanced up at the sky, "It's about to be sundown and we need some sleep, Thornstar'll probably organize us for the dawn patrol or something tomarrow since the threat of these new cats," he meowed avoiding her gaze, "let's rest." Brackenpaw took one look at Thistlepaw and just thought that Hawkpaw couldn't admit that Thistlepaw was wrong in his way of thinking, but she just didn't know who was right or who was wrong. And if Thornstar really is Clanborn, why did Talon decide to leave the Clan to be a rogue...? She pondered as she made an attempt to scoot her nest a bit away from Hawkpaw's before she lay down and drifted off into sleep.
Darkness enveloped Brackenpaw's dreams as she stumbled over her own paws, racing to find an exit from the never ending darkness that just continued to suffocate her. Her golden fur was fluffed up to twice it's size as she made an attempt to pivot to look backwards too see if something was chasing her when she tripped and tumbled in a heap of flailing paws. Finally coming to a stop, she glanced up to see a pair of green eyes and claws coming at her, and she let out a yowl of terror before a paw prodded her and she sat up in confusion, the darkness still around her. She was about to attack what was looking at her when she noticed bored-looking amber eyes and at once recognized Thistlepaw staring at her calmly. Was I dreaming? She wondered before she glanced at Thistlepaw, "What, is it dawn, am I on the patrol?" She asked as calmly as she could, but couldn't get rid of a slight tremble in her voice as she noticed how dark it was outside of the den. Thistlepaw continued to stare at her for an uncomfortable amount of time before he shook his head, "It's the middle of the night," he meowed before settling down in his nest, which Brackenpaw just noticed was incredibly close to her's. "I heard you yowl out, and when I went over you had a look of fear and your fur felt like it was on fire," he continued as he lay his head on his paws, continueing to look at her. "I'm surprised Hawkpaw didn't wake up ready to attack StarClan for you, the way you yowled and all," he mewed before yawning and shutting his eyes, "Maybe you could have Redfur take a look at you tomarrow morning," he mumbled before staying quiet. Brackenpaw could only nod silently as she lay down once again, an uncomfortable feeling making her fur stand on end as she finally shut her eyes, If Thistlepaw hadn't woke me I don't know what would have happened...She thought before forcing her fur to lie flat, StarClan, is this a sign of dread to come for my Clan?
