CHAPTER 4
Wildkit closed her eyes against the pounding rain. It poured from the black sky. The time of day should be near sunset, but it looked like it was midnight. The rain fell so hard that it hurt Wildkit's back. The golden tabby fur was plastered to her skin, and a freezing gust blew over the trees, making her shiver.
Behind her, Rainkit was shivering from the cold. She was silent, and her eyes were filled with fear. Wildkit knew what she was thinking. How can we have been so stupid? We'll die out here! She wished she had never left the camp. They would be warm, safe, and comfortable at their mother's side in the nurcery. But now Wildkit didn't know if they'd even see their mother again. The thought choked her like a tough bit of fresh-kill in her throat.
By now even the memory of the strange voice calling her out here remained in the back of her mind. Wildkit was determined to get her and Rainkit home safely. It was her own fault that Rainkit had endangered herself. If she haden't run off, the most they would have got was a scolding. Rainkit would be safe. Now her life was at risk. And it was her fault. Wildkit felt pain well up in her belly like a rock. Please, StarClan! Don't let Rainkit die. What ever happens to me, don't let her die!
A flash of lightning pierced the sky and struck the ground in front of Wildkit. She jumped back in terror, and Rainkit squeaked in fear. They both trembled violenlty. A few more steps and Wildkit would have been in the path of the deadly bolt. Are you trying to punish me, StarClan? Wildkit hoped that the answer was no.
A loud rumble of thunder followed it, but Wildkit and Rainkit ignored it. They were too exhausted to be scared anymore. They just wanted to go home. The trees shook from the strong wind, so strong that Wildkit looked up. She squinted against the rain. In the distance she saw a dark gray funnel going to the sky. What is that? Wildkit thought, baffled. She had never seen anything like it. Wildkit turned to Rainkit, expecting the same confused look. But Rainkit's eyes were wide. "It can't be!" she whispered. "It is the same thing that was in my dream!" Wildkit tipped her head to one side, confused, but Rainkit bolted in the direction from where they came from. "Run, Wildkit!" There were no time for questions. Summoning all of her strenth, Wildkit launched herself after her sister. Once she was in earshot, Wildkit yowled, "Why are we running?"
"That thing was in my dream! It was so destructive, it could pick us up off the ground!" Wildkit eyes widened in fear. Rainkit odviously had more to say, but she had said enough. Wildkit ran faster, terror giving her new energy. Rainkit took off faster too. Now they weren't running to get home- they were running for their lives.
Wildkit felt tears run down her face, making it burn. Could this be he end?
Suddenly Wildkit rammed into something that sent her spirling backwards. Dazed with fear and shock, she shook her head and got up. But her vision was blurred. All she could see is a bright orange shape leaning towards her. Is this a StarClan cat? Am I dying? She felt herself being lefted off of the ground, and everything went black.
Pain. Everything on Wildkit's body was pain. Her mustles shreaked, her head throbbed, and her lungs hurt. But her vision was still blurred when she opened her eyes. Though Wildkit's body hurt, she was warm and comfortable. Was she really in StarClan? She tried mewing for help.
Suddenly a black shape shot up, and looked around. Is that a StarClan cat? The shape got up and padded over to Wildkit. She inhaled deeply, only to cough out water.
"Shh," the cat said. "Your safe, little one."
"Where am I?" Wildkit whispered. The cat did not respond. Instead he got up and started licking Wildkit's eyes. The rhythmic strokes lulled Wildkit.
Suddenly the cat stopped and mewed, "Open your eyes." She did so. Shock and relief flooded over her. She was in the medicine den! The black cat was Rockstar. His eyes were wide with fear.
"Thank StarClan!" he mewed, his voice shaking. "Oh, Wildkit, you're okay!" Rockstar started licking her pelt, but even that hurt. "Ow!"
Rockstar stepped back. Songbreeze lifted his head. "She will be very sore," he warned.
"How long has it been?" Wildkit asked.
"Only a few minutes, little one," Rockstar purred.
"A few minutes?" No! The funnel was about to reach the camp!
"No!" she yowled. Despite the pain, she scrambled to her paws. "We have to leave!"
"What? Why?" Rockstar meowed in confusion.
"The wind! The funnel!" she gasped. Rockstar continued to stare at her. She shook her head. "Look!" Wildkit ran out of the den. Rockstar was hard on her paws. "What is this abou-" Rockstar stopped, seeing what she was talking about. The funnel was even closer now, so close that Wildkit could feel its power start to pick her up off of her paws. Rockstar grabbed her by the scruff and thrust her back in the den. "Stay here, Wildkit!" Wildkit heard her father's steps fade away.
"No!" Before Songbreeze or Moonpaw could stop her Wildkit looked out of the den and gasped in horror. The funnel was hitting the camp!
Rockstar was ordering cats inside the dens. At once every cat flew into the leader's den, where the rocks would keep them safe. Wildkit felt teeth sink into her scruff and pull her back into the den. She screeched in pain. Songbreeze stood over her. "Shh," he whispered. "It's here."
Wildkit shut her eyes tight. next to her she felt the warm pelts of Rainkit and Shinekit, but that didn't get rid of the chills running up and down her spine. Was this the end of SkyClan?
