CHAPTER 2
Still trembling, Icekit stood at the entrance of the medicine cat's den. Her eye stung, and her paw throbbed, but she didn't care. Icekit had been told to wait out here by Flamestar while the medicine cat, Dewfur, and his apprentice, Dovepaw, treated her injured friends. Icekit felt sick with horror. Images kept popping into the terrified kit's mind- the snarling foxes, Lightningkit pouncing on them, her best friend's life bleeding out of him... Icekit shuttered again.
This is all her fault. If only she had convinced him not to go. If only she had been more stubborn not to go. If only... The thoughts kept racing through her mind. She trembled harder and harder until she couldn't take it anymore. She cried out, and collapsed on the ground sobbing.
A streak out fur raced out of the den behind her, and Icekit looked up. Lightningkit?
But no, it was Dovepaw, the medicine cat apprentice. Icekit dropped her head again, her lungs hurting, and her eyes burning.
"Icekit, calm down!" she mewed, her green eyes wide. She bent down and started licking the kits face.
"It's all my fault!" she cried. "Why couldn't I have stopped him?" She gasped, and collapsed, trembling.
Dovepaw jumped and ran into the medicine den. A heartbeat later Dovepaw ran back out with some herbs in her jaws.
"Eat these, Icekit," she commanded. Icekit took the herbs in her jaws and chewed. The bitter juices seeped down her throat, but she was too miserable to care. She swallowed. The cold juice cooled her throat, making some of the pain ease. Icekit stopped crying, and calmed down. Now she just layed down and closed her eyes. Dovepaw let out a sigh of relief.
"Lightningkit is strong," Dovepaw breathed in Icekit's ear. "We will do everythi..."
Icekit didn't hear the rest. She felt her breathing slow, and her breathing become more steady. Then she fell into a deep, deep sleep.
Icekit opened her eyes, sticky with sleep. She felt a lot calmer now. A soft light of twilight glowed dimly outside. She was in the medicine cat's den in a comfortable nest. Dovepaw was asleep next to her, and Dewfur was in a nest on the other side of the den. Next to him was a small, dark bundle of fur. Lightningkit?
Icekit carefully got up, being cautious not to wake Dovepaw up, and padded over to where the two shapes slept. She tip toed up to them. She let out an inward choking cry
There lay her best friend, his legs splayed out, and his fur crusty with drying blood and herbs. Cobwebs plastered his ugly wound on his flank. Icekit shivered, backing away. She needed to get away from it all.
She backed away from the den, and sat down, looking up to appearing stars of Silverpelt. They shined, cold and silent, floating just above the tree tops. Where are you? How could you let this happen? she asked the stars. No answers came to her. She sighed, wishing she could get away from it all.
"You are very brave for a kit."
Icekit spun around to see a muscular tabby tom gazing down at her, warmth in his eyes. "W-who are you?" she asked.
"My name is Bramblestar," he purred.
"The leader before Flamestar?"
"Yes." Bramblestar sat down next to the kit. She looked up to him. "But how are you here?" she questioned.
"StarClan cats are able to do these things," he answered. "That's how it is."
Bramblestar stopped to groom his tail. Icekit stared at him in wonder. A StarClan cat had come to visit her. But why?
Bramblestar stopped grooming and meowed, "I am here to give you strength," he mewed. "Great change is coming."
"What do you mean?" Icekit asked. But Bramblestar already had faded into the wind. Icekit was left standing there alone, realizing now that she had to be strong- for herself, ThunderClan, and most importantly, Lightningkit.
