Ashpaw rose from his nest and glanced around. Cloudpaw had already departed, though recently. The place where he had slept was still warm to the touch. The speckled gray apprentice sighed. He needed to talk to Cloudpaw about something.
Outside in camp, Fireheart was scolding Cloudpaw, and the fluffly white apprentice was sighing. Anger surged through Ashpaw- why did Fireheart have to pester Cloudpaw so? Even though he was the young cat's mentor, it was none of his damn business.
After the lecture was over, Cloudpaw padded towards the apprentice's den. "Hi Ashpaw," he greeted him.
"Hi." Ashpaw watched Cloudpaw depart into the den. He drew in a quick breath. How could he love another apprentice, and a tom as well?
Following Cloudpaw into the den, Ashpaw settled down next to him. His fur prickled and his paws felt light as a feather. "What was Fireheart talking to you about?" asked the apprentice.
Cloudpaw looked over at Ashpaw. "I went into a Twoleg nest," he admitted. "And ate kittypet food. I don't see how Fireheart can object to it." He rolled his eyes. "After all, if I eat kittypet food, it saves more prey for the rest of the Clan!"
Ashpaw nodded. There was wisdom in Cloudpaw's words. But all the same, he couldn't imagine him going back to the Twolegs. "You're not really going to keep eating there, are you?"
"Of course," replied Cloudpaw. "I'm hungry. And who cares about it anyway?"
I care, thought Ashpaw. Instead he mewed, "but it is in the warrior code that a warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet! Surely StarClan wouldn't-"
"StarClan!" the scoff in Cloudpaw's voice took Ashpaw by surprise. "Tales for kits. Well, I'm not a kit anymore. Not even StarClan can stop me from eating kittypet food. I can be a loyal Clan cat anyway." He lashed his tail.
There was nothing else to be said, and both toms slowly fell into a slumber; side by side.
The next morning, Ashpaw saw Fireheart pad through the thorn tunnel. His eyes were wide with fear, and he was walking stiff-leggedly.
"What's up with him?" hissed Darkstripe. "And where's Cloudpaw?" He turned towards Ashpaw. "Find out what's happening."
The apprentice nodded and slowly creeped up to Fireheart. "What's wrong?" the ginger tom asked him.
"Where's Cloudpaw?" the words burst out of Ashpaw's mouth before he could control them, and he hoped that Fireheart had not heard the sorrow in his voice.
Fireheart looked past him, straight at Darkstripe. "If that snoop wants to know, he should have just asked me himself!" he hissed.
Ashpaw was stung. "It's not only Darkstripe," he confessed. "I- I'm worried too. Cloudpaw said he'd be home by mealtime. He promised." Fear glittered in his eyes. "He keeps his word, whatever else he might do."
There was a short pause. Fireheart sighed. "Cloudpaw has- left the Clan." He bowed his head.
"Left?" Ashpaw's voice was choked. "But he would have told the others first! I never thought he'd really....." he broke off, knowing he had betrayed Cloudpaw's secret.
Fireheart nodded. "It's ok," he mewed. "Go ahead and tell Darkstripe. There's no use in hiding the truth now."
"Cloudpaw! You're back!"
Ashpaw's call rang through the camp as he rushed up to greet the white apprentice. He dug his muzzle into the tom's fur. "I thought you'd never come back."
The white-furred apprentice smiled. "Fireheart, Sandstorm, and Ravenpaw rescued me from the Twolegs."
"You mean you didn't go willingly?" there was shock in Ashpaw's voice.
Shaking his head, Cloudpaw laughed. "I may eat their food, but I don't like dogs."
Suddenly, Ashpaw could hide it no longer. "But I missed you!" he mewed. "I thought you were gone for good! How could you scare me like that?" Then he softened. "I love you."
Cloupaw stared at him for a second. Then he pressed himself closer to Ashpaw. "So do I."
