Title:Shadowstar's Life Chapters:Unknown, at this point Author:Shadowstar Pairing:ShadowxSnow Rating:PG Spoilers:None Summary:Shadowstar's life both in, and before her leadership Warning:Umm, some deaths and stuff Disclaimer:I don't own warriors, but I did create these characters and their personalities, I'm not stealing. Except Erin Hunter owns a couple characters, like the original Shadowstar, ShadowClan's first leader
Chapter One ~~~~~~~~
Shadowkit was born on a cold, frosty morning in leaf-bare, along with three others; Lionkit, a golden tabby tom-kit, Hailkit, a pure white she-kit, and Emberkit, a fiery orange she-kit. She was black, unlike either of her parents. Her father, Sparrowwing, was ginger, while her mother Meadowheart had a soft white pelt. She, being a kit, wasn't quite bothered by this, but the Clan were curious. Had Meadowheart had another mate? But Meadowheart was quick to explain that Shadowkit's coloring must have been from her great-great-grandmother, and ShadowClan's first ever leader; Shadowstar. Remembering tales of their ancient leader, the ShadowClan cats were quick to judge Shadowkit, saying that she would be just as arrogant and battle-thirsty as their old leader. Lionkit, Emberkit, and Hailkit, having the advantage of looking like their parents, were left unjudged. Ordered by Thornstar, the Clan leader, a close watch was kept on the black she-kit. When she finally opened her eyes, they were revealed to be a shocking, icy blue. None of her kin had icy eyes like this, not even Shadowstar, so the Clan were once again quick to judge, saying that her icy eyes were a sign of evil. Once again, her brother, Lionkit, had amber eyes, Hailkit green, and Emberkit deep blue, so they were safe in terms of Clan judgement. But Shadowkit was still oblivious to their taunts and comments. But that would soon change...

When Shadowkit was old enough to learn, and perhaps begin to understand the ways of Clan life, she became open to the taunts the Clan were giving her. She questioned her mother about it, who assured her that it was only because they were jealous, and that it would blow over in time. But her mother knew that was not true, and Shadowkit saw it in her eyes. "Mother," she asked one night, while her siblings were asleep. "Why do all the other cats look at me as if I'm worthless?" Meadowstream saw the hurt in her daughters eyes, and knew it was time for the truth. "You are judged because of the color of your pelt. It isn't like mine or your fathers. You take after ShadowClan's first leader, Shadowstar. You should be proud." She rested her tail comfortingly on her daughters shoulder. But Shadowkit flinched away from her. "I've heard the tales about our old leader! It isn't fair! Why can't I be like you, or Lionkit, Hailkit, and Emberkit?" Meadowstream blinked back tears, unable to answer Shadowkit's question. Why did StarClan make her like this?

Chapter Two ~~~~~~~~
Shadowkit had been chasing a moth outside the nursery, when she heard some of the senior warriors talking with Thornstar. Thinking she heard her name, she crept closer, hiding behind some brambles on the camp wall. "But can we trust her enough to make her an apprentice?" Thornstar was saying to Foxtail, the Clan deputy. Foxtail shook his head slowly. "I don't know. But if we delay her ceremony, maybe we will make her angry enough to plot against us..." Shadowkit's eyes narrowed in fury. Why does everyone think that I'm a traitor! I haven't done anything wrong! She stalked back into the nursery, head held high, tail lashing in anger. Some of the queens looked at her with wide eyes, as if afraid she would attack their kits. Stalking over to her mothers, and siblings, she prodded her mother in the side with her paw. Meadowstream raised her head. "What is it, Shadowkit?" she asked. Shadowkit told her what she had heard, and how she thought it was unfair that her sisters and brother would be made an apprentice, and if she was lucky enough to join them, that it would only be to sooth an ambition that she didn't have. Meadowstream hissed under her breath. "That Thornstar! Wouldn't trust himself for a couple of mouse-tails." Shadowkit nodded, and began to sob quietly. Meadowstreams eyes hardened at the sight of her daughters sadness. "When he makes you an apprentice, you show him that you are the most loyal warrior in the forest! Don't give him and reason to think you disloyal!" Shadowkit nodded. "I'll be Shadowpaw!" She flicked her tail before continiung, "The most willing apprentice in all four Clans!"
****************************************************
Shadowkit had groomed her fur speacially on the morning of her apprenticeship. She had walked up to the leaders rock with pride, keeping step with her siblings, feeling excitement that mirrored her own course through their fur. She felt blood pulsing through her veins as Thornstar prounounced the ritual words, "By naming apprentices, we show that ShadowClan will remain strong. Lionkit, from this day forward until you recieve your warrior name, you will be known as Lionpaw. Gorsetail, you will be mentor to Lionpaw." Her brother touched noses with Gorsetail, and they stepped back to watch the rest of the ceremony. "Hailkit, from this day forward until you recieve your warrior name, you will be known as Hailpaw. Gingerclaw will be your mentor." They also touched noses. "Emberkit, from this day forward until you recieve your warrior name, you will be known as Emberpaw. Your mentor will be Darkpelt." As Emberpaw and Darkpelt touched noses, Shadowkit wondered who her mentor would be. Excitement ruffled her fur as Thornstar yowled, "Shadowkit, from this day forward until you recieve your warrior name, you will be known as Shadowpaw. I will be your mentor." Anger mingled with excitement as she touched noses with her leader. She knew he was only doing it to keep an eye on her, but she still felt proud to be his apprentice.

Chapter Three ~~~~~~~~~
Shadowpaw followed Thornstar out of camp; they were going to explore the territory. A few minutes passed since they had left the camp, when Thornstar turned to her. He studied her for a long moment before speaking. "I thought we'd start at The Burnt Syacamore, and then I'll teach you how to hunt once we reach the border." Shadowpaw waved her tail in excitement. "Ok!" The territory, Shadowpaw realized, was alot bigger than she had thought. By the time they had reached the border with ThunderClan, she was exausted. Thornstar showed her the best way to stalk prey. When the small session ended, a mouse was held in her jaws. Thornstar spoke up, "Shadowpaw, what can you smell?" Shadowpaw inhaled deeply. Alot of strange scents hit her scent glands. "Dog..." she said, concentrating harder. "Thunderpath, and some strange cat-scent I don't recognize." Thornstar blinked. "Good. I don't expect you to recognize it yet. That is ThunderClan scent. Beware the cats who live beyond that border, they are traitors!" Shadowpaw was confused. Wasn't it always the elders that said ThunderClan thought we were traitors. She shook her head slowly, and followed Thornstar back to camp, proudly carrying her catch.
**************************************************************************
Shadowpaw was chatting with Hailpaw and Emberpaw when Lionpaw approached. "Come on!" he mewed excitedly. "Thornstar says we can all train together today! Shadowpaw's eyes lit up. Though they had all been apprentices for two moons now, they had been kept seperate. They had long been awaiting a time when they could train together. Getting to her paws, she padded towards the camp entrance, where Thornstar was waiting with Darkpelt, Gingerclaw, and Gorsetail. When the four apprentices reached them, Thornstar flicked his tail, and they followed him silently out of camp. They continued at the traing hollow, where Shadowpaw and her siblings compared the fighting moves they had learned. Shadowpaw won, and she couldn't help but notice the suspicious look Thornstar was giving her. Ignoring it, she and her sisters had a hunting competition, while Lionpaw learned the scent of badger. Hailpaw won the hunting, and Thornstar didn't give her any looks. Why is it always me? Shadowpaw wondered as the day wore on. Thornstar was still keeping a close watch on her, even though she had been hard working and loyal. She knew he thought her a traitor. While they were in the middle of a lecture about how to properly stalk birds, the deputy, Foxtail, padded towards them. Turning to Thornstar, he meowed, "I need to talk to you." He glanced at Shadowpaw when he said this, and she figured he was spreading rumors. Only a few moments later would she find out how terribly wrong she was.

Shadowpaw was sitting down with her tail curled over her paws. Beside her, her Lionpaw, Hailpaw, and Emberpaw had also abandoned all attempts to improve their stalking. Now all eyes were on Thornstar and Foxtail, who, Shadowpaw noticed, was not only staring at her, but at her brothers and sisters as well. And his expression, instead of the usual mistrust, was of pity. Suddenly, Shadowpaw didn't want to know what he had to say. But she couldn't stop it, and a few moments later, Thornstar padded up to them. "Back to camp," he meowed. "There is something you need to know." Shadowpaw exchanged a worried glance with Emberpaw as they followed their leader back to camp. What was happening?
**************************************************************************
Back at the camp, Thornstar had led them all into his den, which made them even more wary. Turning, Thornstar flicked his tail to the ground. The four apprentices sat down, and looked expectantly at Thornstar, who breathed deeply before continuing. "At the last Gathering, WindClan accused us of stealing prey. They said that if we didn't admit it, therte would be trouble. Though we did steal prey, we refused to those piles of foxdung!" Shadowpaw disagreed silently, but in the face of her leader, said nothing. "They told us to watch our backs, which we did. A patrol went out to the WindClan border, while we were training. On the patrol were Foxtail, Amberheart, and your parents. WindClan attacked, and we were hopelessly outnumbered, seven to four. Eventually, WindClan were driven off, but only two members of that patrol returned." Shadowpaw knew that at least one of her parents didn't make it, because Foxtail had been the one to deliver the news. Her voice shaking, Shadowpaw asked, "Who didn't return?" Thornstar blinked sadly. "Meadowheart and Sparrowwing." Grief crashed over Shadowpaw like a black wave. My parents are dead!
