The survival of the clans as we know it all depends on 2 young, wise apprentices
PROLOGUE
Large droplets of rain struck the large, jagged rocks as the rain worsened. The river was thrashing about wildly in the eye of a storm. A large, tabby tom hurled himself onto a muscular black tom. He let out a loud growl and the 2 began to fight wildly. Blood seemed to be splattered everywhere as a large mass of cats began attacking each other in a bloodthirsty war for territory and prey. Everything was loud and traitorous; this would surely be the death of many cats. As if to answer this heeding premonition, a loud yowl was heard, followed by a splash. The black, muscular tom had been knocked off his attacker, and thrust into the river. A large mass of cats gathered around to watch as the black tom frantically paddled about. A calico she-cat let out a desperate yowl of “Black Star!” Then, the paddling stopped and the last seen of the black, bobbing head was submerged under water. The calico let out a terrible wail, and many of the cats retreated to follow her, wondering what she was doing. The calico cat flung herself into the river, but no trace of the black cat was seen. The calico struggled, yet managed to grab foothold on land. She coughed and sputtered, then turned to other mass of cats, a threatening, evil look in her eyes. “You will pay for this Snow Clan” she snarled.
CHAPTER ONE
Blood covered, bruised, and in pain, the cats of Snow Clan slowly and sadly marched back to camp. Among them was the brown tabby who had flung Black Star into the river, Dust Tail. His eyes were wide with panic. “I… I didn’t mean to I swear! I just tried to get him off me and…” he paused and swallowed. “It wasn’t your fault,” an icy white she cat mewed defensively, “They tried to mark their territory on our land and it was a fight for our clan! Though I feel sorry for Fire Clan, he attacked you and you can’t be blamed for defending yourself.” The she cat’s words seemed to have calmed Dust Tail, for he mewed “Thank you Crystal Star,” and ran on ahead.
Meanwhile, back at camp, the worried clan was anxiously awaiting the return of their warriors. Among them was young Ice Paw, who had just begun her training 2 moons ago. She paced back and forth nervously. “Please Star Clan!” she prayed silently, “Let Wild Paw be ok!” Ice Paw looked around frantically, hoping the patrol would be back soon. Suddenly, a band of cats burst into the clearing. The warriors of Snow Clan! Ice Paw held her breath, then yowled with delight to see her sister trot happily into the camp. Ice paw bolted towards Wild Paw, knocking her over. Wild Paw purred and cuffed Ice Paw over the ear. As if to guess what she was thinking, she purred, “I’m fine you twit!” Ice Paw let Wild Paw up, then gasped. Wild Paw had a deep claw mark on her paw. “Are you ok?” Ice Paw asked nervously. Wild Paw looked down at her paw and mewed, “Oh this ol’ thing? Not a problem! I’m fine.” Ice Paw studied her sister, then meowed, “Aren’t you going to go to the Medicine Cats Den?” Wild Paw snickered, then mewed “Well I WAS going to until you tackled me!” Ice Paw nodded then trotted over to the fresh kill pile. “Save some for me!” Wild Paw yowled from the medicine cats den; “I’m starved!” Ice Paw chuckled and picked out a nice mouse for herself, and a vole for her sister.
Dust Tail had been comforted by his leader’s words, but now felt guilty. He had killed the Fire Clan leader! He shook his head, feeling ashamed, as he slowly made his way over to the fresh kill pile. He grabbed a chaffinch, then trotted over to his den. He took a bite then pushed it away. He felt too depressed to eat.
Crystal Star leapt up to High Rock and called a meeting. She looked at her clan cats, then called out; “Black Star is dead!” The cats gasped as she continued. “While out on patrol, we found a patrol of Fire Clan cats, including the leader, marking their territory on Icy River Falls!” One cat yowled loudly, “That’s on OUR territory!” Crystal Star nodded, and mewed, “We attacked, and by accident Dust Tail knocked him into the river. They swore revenge on us, so I’ve got some new rules.” The cats listened intently as she listed the rules. “First off, there must be at least 4 warriors and 3 apprentices at camp at all times! Second, no apprentice is allowed out of clan unless accompanied by 2 warriors. Lastly, we must begin to repair the camp incase of an attack. Lily Tail, Polar Pelt,” The 2 cats stood up as she called their names. “I’m putting you in charge of repairing the nursery as well as the dens. You can choose a few cats to help you. We will not be defeated!” She yowled her last words proudly, and dismissed the clan. They got busy repairing, patrolling, hunting, and getting ready for an attack!

CHAPTER 2
It had been a few hours after the leader’s announcement, and Dust Tail was as miserable as ever. He sighed, nothing between Fire Clan and Snow Clan would ever be the same. He lay his head on his paws sadly, and was startled to feel a paw prod him. He looked up and instantly felt a rush of surprise. Staring right back at him was the beautiful black she-cat, Shadow Storm. “Hello,” she purred. Dust Tail felt privileged, for most of the cats of the clan weren’t talking to him. “H…h…hello Shadow Storm!” he mewed back, then felt mouse brained for stuttering so much. Her whiskers twitched with amusement, as she meowed, “What’s the matter with you?” The amusement faded from her beautiful blue eyes, and as if she was reading his thoughts mewed, “I know you would never intentionally kill a cat! You’re a loyal cat of our clan.” Dust Tail couldn’t help but notice a loud snort from an elderly grey tom, Salmon Tail. He snorted once more and turned his back on the 2 cats. Shadow Storm’s eyes burned with an unreadable fire, then she gazed back at Dust Tail and purred, “Ignore him! He’s a cranky old fur ball!” She touched noses with him, then got up and trotted away. Dust Tail sighed happily. Even after what he had done, Shadow Storm still cared for him. He watched as she padded out of the camp, and Dust Tail was startled to hear a voice mutter with amusement, “Special is she?” Dust Tail turned around to see his best friend, Oak Pelt. “I… I don’t know what you’re talking about…” he trailed off, rather unconvincingly. “Oh give it up Dust Tail!” Oak Pelt let out an exasperated mew, “You’re completely in love with Shadow Storm!” Dust Tail was about to protest, then he remember the way his fur has prickled pleasingly as her gentle, gorgeous blue eyes had met his rather dull brown eyes. “I guess I am,” he admitted softly. Oak Pelt stared over to where Shadow Storm was still standing, talking with the leader, and mewed, “I can see why! She is a gorgeous cat!” For a moment Dust Tail felt a prickle of anger, but as if Oak Pelt had read his mind he quickly added, “But I can see she’s taken. Besides, I’m more for Flake Pelt!” Dust Pelt quickly changed his gaze to the gentle, greyish white she-cat. “She is pretty, but Shadow Storm is just…” Dust Tail scuffled his paws on the ground and Oak Pelt nodded understandingly. “Special! I know!” he finished quickly, and began to roughly lick his friend’s ears. “I just don’t know how to explain it to her!” Dust Tail sighed. Oak Pelt stopped licking Dust Tails ears and mewed, “Well, the way I see it, every cat gets one or two special moments to express their feelings to their special cat. You’ve just got to wait for that special moment and the words will flow out!” Dust Tails looked at his friend in surprise, “That was really profound!” Oak Pelt flicked his tail embarrassingly and mewed, “I heard something like that in a dream once…” Dust Tail nodded and stood up, deciding to ask Shadow Storm if she would like to go hunting. “Not off to kill another leader, are you?” an icy voice hissed. Dust Tail looked up to see Hawk Fur, sneering at him. Dust Tail flattened his ears and hissed, “No, actually I was going to find a couple cats who wanted to go hunting,” Hawk Fur snarled at Dust Tail and meowed, “You’ll stay away from Shadow Storm, if you know what’s good for you,” he hissed threateningly and stalked away. Dust Tail watched Hawk Fur walk away and felt as if he’d been crushed. He walked sadly back the warrior’s den, his tail dragging. Oak Pelt was still sitting there, and he looked up at his friend. “What’s the matter, did she reject you or something?” “No,” Dust Pelt meowed, “It’s just that… well Hawk Fur told me to stay from Shadow Storm! He must love her too!” Dust Tail’s head fell to his paws and he let out a low moan. “Hey, Dust Tail! You can’t just give up on Shadow Storm! Hawk Fur is a jerk, and I’m sure that Shadow Storm knows that!” “You think? Dust Tail asked. “I’m sure of it!” Oak Pelt encouraged, “Plus, it’s not like he can tell you what to do!” “You’re right! Thanks Oak Pelt!” Dust Tail mewed and walked over to Shadow Storm. “Hey, Shadow Storm!” The beautiful she-cat turned around and meowed, “Oh, Hi Dust Tail! What’s on your mind?” Dust Tail felt a pair of eyes boring into the back of his head. “Hawk Fur…” he thought. “I was wondering if you’d like to go hunting,” Dust Tail meowed. “I’d love to! Today’s been one of those boring days!” Dust Tail was following Shadow Storm, as she headed out of the camp, when a voice from behind them meowed, “Can I come too?” Dust Tail felt annoyance wash over him as Hawk Fur padded up beside Shadow Storm. “Umm… sure,” Shadow Storm meowed. Hawk Fur meowed, “Great! Let’s go!” Shadow Storm ran on ahead, and Hawk Fur turned around and cast Dust Tail a look of victory. He bounded along after Shadow Storm. Dust Tail grumbled and followed the 2 cats, wondering if Shadow Storm felt anything for Hawk Fur.

Chapter 3
He had just caught up with Shadow Storm and Hawk Fur, and he heard Shadow Storm angrily meowing at Hawk Fur. “Hawk Fur! Don’t come charging up here like that! We’re hunting remember? Not pretending to be little kits!” Hawk Fur flattened his ears and hissed, “Don’t talk to me like that, Shadow Storm! I’m older than you!” Shadow Storm rolled her eyes and hissed; “Well that doesn’t matter! At least I have enough sense to know not to come stomping into the forest when there’s prey to be caught!” She turned around, starting to walk away, and meowed, “Honestly Hawk Fur! You can act like such a kit sometimes! Come on Dust Tail! We’ll leave Hawk fur to play around in the leaves!” Dust Tail nodded and smirked at Hawk Fur as they passed him. Hawk Fur’s mouth dropped open, and he stood there as the two of them trotted away. “I’m older than you, what’s that supposed to mean? That just because you’re older, you’re more mature?!” Shadow Storm meowed. Dust Tail laughed and replied, “Obviously not!” Shadow Storm purred then stopped suddenly. She tasted the air. “Vole!” she whispered, and crept forward very slowly. She stood still as a tree, and then… BANG! She leapt into the air and snatched the vole with a quick scoop of a paw. She brought it to the ground and finished it off very quickly. “Wow! What a neat trick! You’re a great hunter Shadow Storm!” Dust Tail meowed. Shadow Storm looked Dust Tail straight in the eye and meowed, “Thanks Dust Tail,” Dust Tail then wondered if this was the moment. “Shadow Storm, I…” “THERE YOU ARE!!!” A loud voice screamed, interrupting Dust Tails sentence. Hawk Fur came running forward, and meowed, “I was wondering where you guys went!” Shadow Storm growled and meowed, “Done playing with the leaves, are we? Came to scare away all the prey? Well bravo, you’ve succeeded in your mission! Stop scaring away all the prey!” Hawk Fur muttered something, then meowed, “Sorry! I was just so excited to see you! And I saw you catch that vole, nice moves!” Hawk Fur looked at Dust Tail, and his eyes flashed with a thrill of competition. Shadow Storm rolled her eyes and muttered, “Oh go roll in some syrup, you sappy cat! I’ll catch up with you guys later, I’ve got some hunting to do!” With that, Shadow Storm bounded away, in the direction of an overpowering prey scent. Hawk Fur glared at Dust Tail and hissed, “What did I tell you about Shadow Storm?” Dust Tail rolled his eyes and meowed, “First off, she totally hates you. Second, it’s a free forest!” Hawk Fur narrowed his eyes and stalked back in the direction of the camp. Dust Tail then realized that he should probably hunt for some fresh kill for the clan. And so, he went off in the direction of a new prey scent, hoping to have a successful hunt.

Chapter 4
It was nearing sun down, and Dust Tail had just returned to camp. He had had a very successful hunt, and all of the clan was impressed. Dust Tail felt a surge of satisfaction; it seemed as if everyone had forgotten about Black Star. He grabbed a plump mouse and settled down next to Oak Pelt. “So? How was your hunt?” Oak Pelt asked. Dust Tail described the whole hunt, in detail, and including the details before the hunt. Oak Pelt nodded and meowed, “So you would have been able to tell Shadow Storm, but Hawk Fur interrupted you? What a piece of fox dung!” Dust Tail shrugged and meowed, “I’ll be able to tell her… someday… So has she come back from hunting yet?” Oak Pelt shook his head, “I’m surprised she hasn’t yet!” Dust Tail felt a prickle of nervousness. Shadow Storm was ok, right? Then, he heard a loud sneeze from the entrance to the clan. He lifted his head to see Shadow Storm, sopping wet, enter the clan. She settled down beside Dust Tail, after putting down her fresh kill in the pile, and sneezed again. “What happened?” Dust Tail asked worriedly. “I was following a mouse and wasn’t paying attention to where I was going and,” Shadow Storm stopped and sneezed once more, “the stupid thing led me into that huge puddle outside of camp!” Shadow Storm was shivering, and Dust Tail moved closer to her, hoping she’d warm up. “Don’t you think you should go to the medicine cat’s den?” Dust Tail asked. Shadow Storm shook her head and meowed, “No, I’d rather stay with you,” Dust Tail purred and began to lick her ears. Shadow Storm began purring, and in turn began licking his paws. Dust Tail felt as if he were in heaven and nothing could burst his bubble. And, low and behold, something did. “Hey Shadow Storm!” a loud, obnoxious voice meowed, “Don’t you think you should go to the medicine cat’s den?” Shadow Storm shook her head and hissed, “Shut it Hawk Fur, you little piece of mouse dung!” Unfortunately, Crystal Star had heard this and mewed, “Yes, why of course you should go to the medicine cat’s den, Shadow Storm!” She opened her mouth, but realized it would be useless to argue with the leader. Instead, she got up, and began to trot over. Dust Tail quickly got up and meowed, “Shadow Storm! I’ll go with you, in case… err… the medicine cat needs me to get something.” Shadow Storm let out a delighted purr, and slowed down, to wait for him. The 2 cats then entered the Medicine cats den. “Hello Dust Tail,” the medicine cat, Holly Fur, meowed, “Hello… Shadow Storm! Oh my! What happened?” Shadow Storm explained the situation as Dust Pelt padded close to Shadow Storm. Holly Fur nodded once she was done explaining and gave her a few herbs, including some poppy seeds. “These will help you sleep,” Holly Fur explained. Shadow Storm was about to lick them up, but first turned to Dust Tail and meowed, “You’ll stay with me, right?” Dust Tail looked at the medicine cat, who nodded, and meowed, “Of course!” Shadow Storm purred and lapped up the seeds. Dust Tail curled up close to Shadow Storm, and the 2 cats fell asleep side by side.

CHAPTER 5[/b]
“Wild Paw?” Ice Paw meowed confusingly. “Wild Paw?” she howled. She had been hunting with her sister and all of a sudden, she had taken off. She was gone! She was dashing around the forest, confused, howling “Wild Paw!” Then, she saw a sight that stopped her cold. In front of her, was a majestic golden tabby. “Who… who are you?” she questioned. “I am Lion Star, and I have a message for you, young apprentice.” Ice Paw gaped at the majestic cat, this was Lion Star! Previous leader of Snow Clan! She knew then that she was dreaming. “I come to you with this warning,” Lion Star meowed, “The flames of evil shall wreak havoc on the dust that has caused the star of black to shine no more. You must warn dust of this encounter.” Ice Paw simply stood there. What on earth was that supposed to mean? “What does it mean, Lion Star?” Lion star laughed softly and purred, “With time, you will understand this prophecy, young one. Now, I must go.” With that, Lion star turned around, and began to walk away. “No! NO! Don’t leave me Lion Star!! What does it mean? What does it mean?” Ice Paw began to run frantically towards Lion Star, but tripped over a stump. “Oww!” she cried as she rubbed her belly. “ICE PAW!” a loud voice suddenly shrieked. Ice Paw jolted and jumped up. So it had been a dream. Wild Paw was sitting in front of her, looking concerned. “Are you ok? You were mewing in your sleep, and meowing “What does it mean?” a lot. Is everything ok?” Ice Paw nodded and meowed, “Just… umm… a weird dream that’s all.” Wild Paw tilted her head, but shrugged and meowed, “Well, Salmon Tail and Broken Foot need their bedding changed, they’ve been calling for us all morning.” Wild Paw jumped to her feet and dashed towards the elder’s den. Ice Paw got up much slower and followed in her sisters direction. What did her dream mean? Was the clan in danger?
CHAPTER 6[/b]
Dust Tail yawned and woke up to see different piles of herbs and berries in front of him. He lifted his head confusingly, then remembered why he was here. He looked down at Shadow Storm, who was still sleeping, and sighed. She was so beautiful. Dust Tail heard a grunt and looked up to see Hawk Fur, eyeing him angrily. He turned his back on him and trotted back to the warriors den. Dust Tail rolled his eyes and curled closer to Shadow Storm. Her fur felt much drier now, and this made Dust Pelt happy. Suddenly, she yawned and she lifted her head. She looked a bit confused at first, Dust Pelt guessed she was doing the same thing he did. Then, she turned her head and she saw Dust Pelt. Her eyes widened and she purred, “I was a little confused there…” Dust Pelt laughed and got up to stretch. Holly Fur poked her head out of her den and purred, “Good morning Shadow Storm! Feeling better now?” Shadow Storm nodded and Holly Fur said, “Well, I’ll just give you a quick check up, to make sure you don’t have a cold or anything.” She got up and asked Shadow Storm a few questions while examining her. “Great!” Holly Fur exclaimed, “I was afraid you might have gotten a cold, but you’re fine! You can leave the medicine cat’s den whenever you like.” Shadow Storm nodded and mewed, “Thank you Holly Fur!” then meowed to Dust Tail, “You coming? I think I heard Sun Pelt saying he was looking for us to be on a patrol.” Dust Tail nodded and the 2 cats trotted out of the den. Sure enough, there was a group of cats surrounding the young sun pelted tabby tom, as he tried to settle things down. “Now, Crystal Star has asked me to double the patrols, in case of an attack we’d like to get further notice. Now, I’ll need a patrol for right now… umm… “We’ll do it!” Shadow Storm meowed. Sun Pelt looked over at Shadow Storm gratefully and mewed, “Who’s we?” “Dust Tail and I,” Shadow Storm cheerfully meowed. As she said this, Sun Pelt looked over at Dust Tail, and he nodded. “Ok I think 2 warriors on a patrol ought to be enough…” “I’m free! I’ll go!” another voice meowed loudly. Dust Tail heard Shadow Storm groan as Hawk Fur stepped forward. “Well… I don’t know… we do need extra warriors to help around camp, besides, 2 warriors is enough… Shadow Storm? Dust Tail? You can decide,” Sun Pelt meowed. Dust Tail glared angrily at Hawk Fur, and Hawk Fur just stuck out his tongue. “Hawk Fur,” Shadow Storm replied, “We’re not apprentices, we don’t need a mentor,” Hawk Fur looked stung as Shadow Storm continued, “We can do this on our own. You don’t have to follow me everywhere you know! Besides,” she added in a quieter voice, “You’re needed around camp. The warriors surrounding Sun Pelt chuckled, and Hawk Fur narrowed his eyes and snorted. Shadow Storm simply flicked her tail and meowed, “Shall we go now then, Sun Pelt?” The orangish tabby nodded, and both Shadow Storm and Dust Tail pelted towards the entrance of the clan. “If Fire Clan, or any other clan, is on our territory, they won’t stand a chance!” Shadow Storm growled enthusiastically.

CHAPTER 7
"Sure is quiet around here..." Shadowstorm noted as the 2 cats plodded on through the lush green forest. "Yeah, very quiet," he muttered. Shadowstorm gave DustTail a funny look. "What's wrong," she mewed, anxiety showing in her meow. "Oh, it's just..." DustTail trailed off, lost for words. "Just...?" Shadowstorm meowed, wanting him to press on. "Oh, it's nothing," he said after a long pause. I'll never be able to tell her, he thought to himself sadly, and their patrol continued. After a while, Shadowstorm stopped and looked at DustTail mischeviously. "Wanna go for a good ol' hunt?' she purred. He looked up at her and mewed, "Sure! Maybe you can show me your vole trick!" She purred and rubbed her head against his head.He let out a deep, loud purr. "You purr so loudly," she murmured softly. "I only purr that way when I'm truely happy," he purred loudly. She looked up at him, and the love and admiration in his eyes was reflecting from her eyes into his. "Shadowstorm," he purred softly. "Yes?" Shadowstorm asked. "There's something I have to tell you," Shadowstorm looked up, her eyes glittering. "I lo..." "Shadowstorm! DustTail!" a voice meowed. DustTail snorted and turned around to see SunPelt, the stern deputy. "You're needed back at the camp. I'm to continue your patrol." DustTail nodded, as well did Shadowstorm, and the 2 began to trot back to camp. "It seems we're interupted a lot," Shadowstorm muttered, somewhat annoyingly, somewhat laughingly. "Yeah," DustTail murmured. Shadowstorm swirved and stopped in front of DustTail. "Look mister," she mewed, "You're going to tell me what you wanted to tell me back there, and a few dawns ago when we were hunting!" Dust Tail looked at her, right into her big, blue eyes, and somehow, he found the words he was looking for. "Shadowstorm, there's something I've wanted to tell you for a while. At first, I was too nervous but with you standing right here, I think I can spit it out. Shadowstorm, you mean everything to me! And what I wanted to say is," he stopped for a moment. Shadowstorms eyes were dancing, "Yes?" she purred. "I love you! I love your fur, your eyes, your personality, everything about you! I never want to be apart from you, ever!" Shadowstorms eyes twinkled, and she purred, "Oh DustTail..." She took a step closer to him and meowed, "You're my everything too! I can't get through the day if I don't see you!" she purred. For a few moments, the cats were in complete harmony. "We'd better get back now," she purred softly. He nodded and purred, "Ok, I wonder what we're needed back at camp for," Shadowstorm shrugged her shoulders and the 2 cats trotted back to camp, tails twined, in a world of love that couldn't break. Or could it?
