The warriors of StarClan shown brightly from up above in Silverpelt. Tonight they were welcoming two new cats to thier ranks. Firestar looked up to his warrior anscestors, hoping that he could be able to pick out Cinderpelt from the throng. But each StarClan warrior looked to be the same, no special star stood out from them.
The flame colored tom looked back once again at the still body of his former apprentince. Her blue eyes that held so much wisdom were forever closed and her melodious voice would never echo again through his ears. The ThunderClan camp was silent, many cats still stunned that the badgers had almost killed all of them.
All around him Firestar could hear the gentle breathing of sleeping cats that were also sitting vigil for Cinderpelt and the young warrior Sootfur. All of the medicine cat's siblings were laying along side her: Brightheart, Thornclaw, and Brackenfur.
"I'm sorry Cinderpelt." he whispered, burying his nose into her sooty gray shoulder. "It's my fault you died."
Ever since the attack that was all he could think about. Firestar's Clanmates had told him over and over again that it wasn't his fault that Cinderpelt was dead but it was.
"If only I had been more firm with you. The monster would have never hurt your leg and you would have never been in this position in the first place." the ThunderClan leader sighed sadly.
Cinderpelt was still a young cat, she had her whole ahead of her and it was gone. Firestar had had close friends die before but this was different from his regular grief. Without the fiery she-cat to back him up he felt inclomplete, as if half of his soul had died along with Cinderpelt.
He had felt this way only once; back during the quest to rebuild SkyClan Sandstorm had disappeared for a while after a long, terrible storm and Firestar thought he had lost her forever. Now his worst fear was being played out; his beloved was dead.
Thinking back on the years he and Cinderpelt had been alive he realized the medicine cat had had feelings toward him. The spat she and Sandstorm had all those moons ago was fueled by something. Cinderpelt had been jealous toward Sandstorm and vice versa.
Sandstorm. Did he truly love the pale ginger queen? Firestar pondered that while looking up at the stars.
Spottedleaf had just been murdered by Clawface and he was left in the living world, away from the pretty tortoiseshell until his death day. Sandstorm was just filling that empty void, after all Firestar needed someone to love.
All his life he had thought it had been Sandstorm; the cat that had bore his kits, the cat that had traveled to him to distant lands, the cat that had been at his side for everything. Now he realized that the she-cat he had been looking for was under his nose this whole time, and now she was gone forever.
"What would it have been like if the monster never injured your leg?" Firestar asked Cinderpelt. "Would it have truly worked out between us?"
"Would you like to find out?" inquired a soft, gentle voice from behind him. ThunderClan's leader whirled around, locking familiar amber eyes.
"Spottedleaf." he blurted out.
The former medicine cat touched noses with him. "Hello Firestar."
"Why are you here? Cinderpelt and Sootfur have already joined your ranks."
"I heard that you wondered what it would be like if Cinderpelt had never been hurt. StarClan has decided to answered that question." Spottedleaf replied.
"You will?" Firestar's ears perked up and he glanced back at Cinderpelt's body with renewed hope.
"StarClan will send you back in time a few moments before Cinderpelt's accident. In order to prevent the whole course of history to be altered the second you rescue Cinderpelt you will forget everything that happened in your old life." the StarClan cat answered.
"But what about Squirrelflight and Leafpool?" despite his feelings he would not allow his daughters to never exsist, not even Cinderpelt was worth thier lives.
"Fate will guide it for that all of these cats beside you will have exsisted in one form or another. But it may not be in the way you expect." Spottedlead meowed slyly.
Firestar pondered for a moment, glancing back at the warrior's den where Sandstorm and Squirrelflight slept. "I'll do it."
"Good luck Firestar." Spottedleaf meowed, stepping forward to touch the ginger cat's head.
Instantly Firestar felt the ground slip away from beneath his paws and the sight of ThunderClan camp vanished and he was blinding by a silvery flash.
The ginger tom's eyes opened. He was back in ThunderClan's old camp and cats that had been dead for moons surrounded him, going on with thier every day lives. All of his age had left him and he was a young warrior again.
For a breif moment all Firestar wanted to do was to share tongues that cats he hadn't had the chance to speak with in moons. Then the true reason of his time travel came back to him.
"Cinderpelt!" he cried, racing out of camp and racing after the younger cat's scent.
"Who in StarClan's name is Cinderpelt?" Dustpaw asked Sandpaw, who could only shrug in response.
Firestar pelted through the undergrowth, thorns and brambles tugged at his fur but he payed them no heed. The disgusting scent of the Thunderpath was filling his nostrils, also mixed with the soft scent of his apprentince.
Cinderpaw was just running into the Thunderpath when Firestar ran into her head straight, sending them both flying away from the monster's path and into a bush. A monster roared by, nearly causing the ginger tom to lose his hearing.
"Fireheart?" Cinderpaw looked up at her mentor with wide blue eyes. "How did you know that the monster was going to hit me?"
"I don't know." he meowed slowly, the reason why he did so escaping him. The only thing he could remember was an older vision of Cinderpaw with a crooked leg, but that too was quickly slipping away.
