Author's Notes: I've been thinking about this one for a while. There's evidence for this pairing in Chapter 10 of A Dangerous Path, I think. Hope you enjoy it!
Fireheart winced as his soft paw pad connected with something on the forest floor. Lifting his paw up and inspecting it, he saw a thorn driven deep into the pad. He would have to go back to camp to see Cinderpelt. His disappointment at ending his hunting trip so soon mingled with happiness at the prospect of seeing his friend, who had once been his apprentice, but was now the Clan’s medicine cat.
As Fireheart approached the camp entrance, Sandstorm greeted him with a friendly purr.
“Do you want to come hunting with me?” she asked, in her sweet and gentle voice, her amber eyes bright and cheerful. Before Fireheart could reply, she added, “It doesn’t look like you had much luck on your own.”
Fireheart glanced at his paws. “Actually, Sandstorm, I was going to see Cinderpelt. I’ll come hunting with you another time.”
Sandstorm briefly met his gaze, her eyes narrowed and her tail and ears twitching. Fireheart braced himself for an angry remark, but Sandstorm merely meowed, “Fine. I’ll go with Dustpelt,” with not even a hint of anger or sadness in her voice.
“Wait – Sandstorm!” Fireheart called, but she had already disappeared into the bushes with a flick of her pale ginger tail.
Fireheart felt heavy with disappointment as he padded over to Cinderpelt’s den. Peering in to the cleft in the smooth, sandy rock, he called her name. There was a flash of blue in the gloom, and Cinderpelt’s eyes met his.
“Yes, Fireheart?” she asked, her blue eyes boring into him. Fireheart found that he could not tear himself away from them. It felt like he was drowning in the sky, like he would never escape from her azure gaze…
“When you’ve quite finished staring at me like a dopey rabbit, maybe you’d like to tell me why you’re here?” Cinderpelt’s meow brought Fireheart back to earth with a bump. She sounded so much like Yellowfang, and when Fireheart thought of the old she-cat he felt the familiar sadness and pain of loss, like she had died yesterday. Cinderpelt was still looking at him, a flicker of annoyance in her eyes.
“Sorry, Cinderpelt. I’m not quite myself today,” Fireheart mumbled.
“Well, that’s obvious,” the grey she-cat snorted. “So why are you here? It’s not just for a chat, I can tell. You have far better things to do than hang around with me.”
“No, Cinderpelt, that’s not true. I came here because I have a thorn in my pad, that’s all.” Fireheart lifted up his paw for her to inspect.
“Well, I’d better get on with it then. You must be busy, what with your deputy tasks and mentoring Bramblepaw – and then there’s Sandstorm.” Cinderpelt was turned slightly away from Fireheart so he couldn’t see her face. She shook her head slightly, and then turned to her herbs. Fireheart’s gaze was drawn to her leg, the one she had injured on the Thunderpath moons ago. He felt the familiar twinge of guilt as he saw her scars, as if it was his fault that she had been hit. He still blamed himself for letting her go near the Thunderpath on her own, for if the accident had never happened, she would have trained as a warrior and then maybe…maybe they would be closer…
He hastily pushed the thought out of his mind as Cinderpelt turned back to him. She placed the bundle of herbs she had on the ground.
“Lift your paw up, please.” Fireheart did as he was told. “Now, this may hurt.” She grasped the thorn in her teeth and pulled. Fireheart let out a gasp and his eyes watered. The thorn was out and Cinderpelt was now pressing cobwebs to his pad.
“Keep them there, and tell me when the bleeding stops,” she instructed, and padded to the back of the medicine den. Fireheart thought about Cinderpelt. Was she really just a friend? Or was it something more. He knew most mentors were close to their apprentices, but he cared for Cinderpelt in a way he was just beginning to understand. Noticing that the cut on his paw had stopped bleeding, he was about to call for Cinderpelt when she appeared out of the gloom, eyes bright and tail up.
“You can go back to whatever you were doing before now, I think. Just don’t lick the wound too roughly, or it’ll start bleeding again,” she told him. Fireheart smiled, giving her a swift lick between the ears. Cinderpelt twitched her whiskers in embarrassment. Fireheart padded out of her den, feeling her warm gaze following him all the way to the gorse tunnel.
