Title: What if..
Author: Me
Pairing: none
Setting: In Dark River
Summary: Lionpaw is madly in love with Heatherpaw. With her delicate pelt, warm heather eyes, and breath-taking smile, what is there not to love? But one day he stumbles across a medicine cat and a warrior, who are being much to friendly with each other. Then he over hears them say something that causes him to rethink where his kins loyalties lie.
Authors Note: As I read over the entry Wikipedia had on Dark River, I thought up a brilliant idea, once you read my story, read this:
With more experience comes both power and danger: Lionpaw makes a friendship—and a discovery—that must be kept hidden; Jaypaw learns a secret that could benefit ThunderClan by damaging others; and Hollypaw knows something that could avert a battle, if she could convince the rest of her Clan.
Chapter 1
A Heart broken, a Secret Kept
Lionpaw's gold pelt shimmered as he rose on the hilltop, the sun outlining his golden fur and green eyes. He raced down hill after hill to reach the small clearing where he met his best friend, Heatherpaw.
He quickly trailed there and poked his nose into the clump of bushes to make sure she was there.
Just the thought of seeing Heatherpaw chilled his spine. He had known from the moment he met her and stared into the hidden depths of her heather eyes, that he loved her.
But his green eyes did not fall upon the familiar pelt of his friend, but the all to familiar pelt of Leafpool!
His eyes bulged and his heart stopped beating.
Leafpool wasn't alone either, the tom Crowfeather was pressed into her fur purring deeply. he must have been saying romantice things, for Lionpaw spotted Leafpool's bracken cheeks turn rosy.
Lionpaw shook his head in confusion, wasn't Crowfeather, Nightclouds mate?! Apparently not.
" Crowfeather, I miss you and our little girl so much, how is her training coming along? Are you being hard on her?"
Lionpaw felt hot tears prick at his eyes and he shut them tightly, not only had his aunt betrayed Thunderclan, but she had had a daughter, and she had asked if Crowfeather was being to hard on her.... That only meant one thing, the love of his life, Heatherpaw, was his cousin.
Suddenly Heatherpaw burst in and joyfully purred, " Leafpool! I have missed you so much!"
What hurt Lionpaws heart the most was the fact that Heatherpaw had known they were related.
The golden tom turned and began to run, but tears of furyand deep pain blinded him and he knocked into something hard.
Looking up and quickly sweeping tears away he recognized the never-aging face of Firestar.
Firestar's flame colored face was crinkled and he gazed at me with knowing eyes, " Lionpaw, sometimes those who you love most, are not the ones for you, follow me my boy."
Lionpaw nodded and the toms strolled silently to Moonpool.
Soon they were looking into a pool that reflected Thunderclan camp.
" Do not let your loss and sorrow blind you from seeing those who care about you most, if you look close enough they are even in your own clan," Firestar meowed wisely.
Lionpaw's eyes brimmed with tears again, but this time they were not shed for Heatherpaw, but for the face of the beautiful honey colored she-cat the pool showed him. The tears fell out of regret, for never noticing how much this apprentice cared about him.
" Honeypaw..." he cried softly, " Please Firestar may we go home."
Firestar nodded.
In a hurry Lionpaw left, but Firestar insisted that he would walk home, and meet Lionpaw there.
Lionpaw reached the camp in a flash. The golden bolted to the apprentice den where he found the honey pelted she-cat staring sadly at her paws. when he entered the den, her bright blue eyes lit up, " Lionpaw!"
" Honeypaw.." he purred and thrust himself toward her, taking in her sweet scent, all this time he had forced his love on Heatherpaw when his friend was loving him.
" I love you.." he whispered, And I always have.. forgive me for not realizing it.
