Firestar had been leader for a while. Each time I looked at him, I couldn't tear my eyes away. Even as a young kit, I would tell my mother Willowpelt that I wanted to be just like him. She would just laugh and say maybe I would be one day. That’s what everyone said.
I was given a mentor, Sandstorm. I liked the ginger she-cat, but I always felt prickles of jealousy whenever she was with Firestar. I told myself no, so many times, but it had no effect. He was older than me, a lot older. I was just a starstruck apprentice, wasn't I?
Each day grew more painful. I managed to hide it all away, locked up inside me. I couldn't bare to look at them, now that they were together. I couldn't concentrate on anything, my training, family or gatherings. Firestar was the only thing I thought, playing over and over in my head: Firestar...Firestar...all day and all night long.
It was just a normal green-leaf evening. The sky was a pretty shade of violet, silverpelt glistening like a thousand eyes. Firestar was walking to me, his emerald eyes shimmering. I stared at the ground, my fur growing sticky.
" Hi Sorellpaw!" He mewed cheerfully. For a heartbeat I thought I heard a note of affection in his voice, but I probably just imagined it.
" Come with me." He told me, sweeping his long orange tail and padding out of camp. I could do nothing but follow.
He guided me to a small clearing near Sunning Rocks. He stopped and sat down on the soft grass. I seated myself next to him. Everything was silent, except for the faint gushing of the river. I enjoyed just being there with him, even though he hadn't said anything yet. Firestar turned his head towards me.
" Sorellpaw?"
I gulped and felt my cheeks burn.
“ I love you.”
I pushed my head into his fur.
“ I love you too.” I whispered.
Starstruck.
