Title: "Your Memory" Chapters: 1[+] Author: Minty Pairing: DustxSand, some SandxFire and DustxFern later on Rating: PG Spoilers: Yeah, but only from the beginning of the first series. Summary: "Dustpaw and Sandpaw had always been together, but when Firepaw enters the forest, things change. Raging emotions prove to be a problem and lead to betrayal, denial, and a dying friendship." Warning: There are going to be a few fights that I have planned. They're not very serious, but I figured I'd include that here. Disclaimer: Warriors © HarperCollins, Erin Hunter [Vicky Holmes, Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry], etc. - all characters belong to them as well. This is a completely Canon fanfiction. Beta: xxx Cover: N/A
Author's Notes: Alright, SandxDust is my favorite pairing if you know me so I was destined to write something about them. I have a few more ideas, but I wanted to start with this one as a base to try and figure out how I can write them in character at that age and onward. So any help with personality will help me greatly! I hope you enjoy it, and I'm just gonna tell you that the beginning is a big lag-gy. I'm never good at starting stories, but I'm better in the middle of things. xD So enjoy as much as you can, I think I'm gonna have fun with this baby.
Also, on a side note, I'm pretty sure this is going to be the title. I was thinking either 'Your Memory' or 'She's Bittersweet'/'Bittersweet' or something else. But for now I'll call it 'Your Memory'.
Chapter 1
As far back as they could remember, the two of them had been together. Always. The only time the duo had been apart was when he came along. At first, it brought them together like a strong force against the tom, but they slowly broke apart. Dustpaw had always been with Sandpaw: in training, sickness, and had been by her side at every possible moment. The two were truly best of friends, going everywhere with one another, eating together, etc. However, as Dustpaw began to know and understand Firepaw more, he grew slightly protective over his friend. Despite Sandpaw's callous remarks at the flame-colored cat, he knew that Firepaw, being a tom, had the power to take her away from Dustpaw. Just thinking of her sitting with Greypaw and Firepaw made his blood boil. He wasn't sure why, but he was determined to make sure that nothing was advancing for the two.
This morning there was dew across the ground and a heavy air came with it. Although it was dark outside, the darker tomcat lazily arose from his spot next to the lighter femme. Groggily, he moved his face from side to side in an attempt to wake up fuller. This morning they had planned to go on a small hunting patrol with just the two of them; their mentors needed a day's rest, hence Sandpaw requested it. Dustpaw had been excited to be going out without their mentors for once, and the idea of showing off his skills made his manly pride exceed its normal level.
As he was stretching, Sandpaw gave a small yawn and awoke from her slumber. The two of them moved out near their tree stump – the den was now empty, except for Firepaw nipping at Greypaw's ears to wake him up. Dustpaw leaned forward and stretched out his legs while Sandpaw quietly rasped her tongue over her fur to groom it. The day was slowly moving forward and the two had finally awoke. After a short silence, the spell was broken as the small she-cat stood on all fours.
“Ready to head out, Dustpaw?” she asked him, a bored tone coming from her voice. Bright eyes moved over to the strong tomcat as he simply nodded his head. The two of them had a mission for the Clan and both were eager to get out into the forest already.
“Ready when you are,” the tomcat replied with a hint of humor in his meow. The two of them were at it again – running around the Clan together, helping out their Clan mates. It really brought Dustpaw joy in these days, but a small glance at Firepaw made him uneasy. The fiery tom had finally gotten Greypaw up and both of them were moving in the direction of the Sandy Hollow. With a rough look at Sandpaw, who seemed oblivious to all of this, he let out a small sigh. “Let's go to Tallpines this time,” he told her with a small smirk. Agreeing, the she-cat and Dustpaw bounded off as the sun was slowly creeping up in the periwinkle sky.
–
“Come on Dustpaw!” the familiar voice called out in a slightly annoyed tone. The dusty tomcat had fallen behind on their trot towards Tallpines. Feeling flushed, the tom simply increased his speed so he was traveling next to her.
“Sorry about that, I was just thinking about something,” he quickly apologized as the bounded into the clearing, both slowing the pace until they were stalking around the trees.
“Well, 'thinking' is gonna kill you one of these days,” she joked around with a small smile on her face. Unlike the way he was around the Clan, Dustpaw always had something on his mind when he was with Sandpaw. She had grown accustom to it, but nevertheless would tease him about it whenever she got the chance.
Letting out a small laugh, Dustpaw remarked, “That's what you always say.” However, the earlier silent spell went over them a second later. They had reached their destination and had a mission to begin.
Slowly creeping in different directions, the whole clearing soon fell still. A breeze carried the scent of a mole and a small rabbit family up ahead, but gave no way to the cats' own scents. Cautiously, they crept forward toward each of their destination. Dustpaw's sandy tail waved carefully across some weeds he had walked over as his eyes pinned on the father rabbit. Waiting a few moments, he pranced forward as he aimed to catch the prey. However, he wasn't as nimble as he bluffed to be. Losing his footing as his jaws snapped in the air, his eyes grew wide as he watched after the rabbit that was sprinting away. He hadn't caught it! Soon, from up ahead, Sandpaw raced out of her 'hiding' and became a ginger blur. She had run forward and stopped the rabbit in its tracks. With a quick bite to the neck, Dustpaw could see the place that he failed was the place that she had won. With a smirk on her lips, she set down her swift kill and passed Dustpaw on her way to the other side of the clearing where the mole scent was.
“Good job, Dustpaw. I knew you would make a good decoy,” she joked around with him, a slight purr in her voice. This was the Sandpaw that he knew and admired. The one that was bittersweet, but always there for you. Although he was feeling a bit embarrassed of his obvious mistake, but being able to recognize it made him feel a little brighter. Playfully sticking out his tongue at her, Dustpaw let out a small groan.
“Next time, you be the decoy!” he taunted her as he was racing after her. [/size]
