Bluebell and Thunderstorm sat on the rocks around the MountainClan camp, their tails twined together. Bluebell turned to her mate, her eyes sad. "Thunderstorm," she whispered hesitantly, tears in her eyes. "There's something I need you to know..." Thunderstorm blinked, eyes worried. "What is it Bluebell?" He brushed comfortingly against her flank. "What's wrong?" Tears ran down Bluebell's face as she replied, "Its about the kits..." She spoke of the kits that she had recently found out she was having. The medicine cat had told her that there would be four. Thunderstorm was instantly on his paws, franticly kneading the ground. "What!" he meowed, his soft voice scared. Bluebell hesitated, then continued, "SpiritClan sent me a message last night..." she began. Thunderstorm was confused. "But they usually only send dreams to medicine cats and leaders..." Bluebell nodded. "I know. But they told me that it was for my ears alone, and for whoever I choose to tell. And after hearing what they said, I agree.." her voice broke, and more tears of anguish streamed down her face. Thunderstorm blinked, then brushed his tail down her flank. "What did they say about our kits, Bluebell?" he prompted gently. Bluebell stared into her mates eyes, then, finding his golden gaze reassuring, continued. "They told me that there would indeed be four, but only one would be with us..." She trailed off again. Thunderstorm whispered, "You mean, three are going to die?" Bluebell shook her head. "No, Thunderstorm. They are going to go to each of the four Clans; MountainClan, of course, DawnClan, EmberClan, and DewClan. They told me that Winterkit shall go to DawnClan, Jaykit will remain with us, Pebblekit will stay with DewClan, and give up Ashkit to EmberClan. They say it is their will, and if they wish, I will follow it." Her eyes were sad as she stared at her mate. Thunderstorm was upset, but he understood. "Okay," was all he said.

Two moons later, the kits were born. The snowy-white she-kit was named Winterkit. At the Gathering, Winterkit was given to DawnClan. The smoky-grey tom-kit was given the name Ashkit, and his parents gave him up to EmberClan. Pebblekit, a small grey she-kit, went to stay with DewClan, and their first-born, Jaykit, stayed with them in MountainClan. He was small and grey. And so their destiny began...
