The rain pelted the earth below, cold as ice and sharp like teeth. Leaf-Bare had arrived. Up in the sky, The Clan of past warriors waited beside an indigo colored pool, stars matted in the pelts and icy fire glowing in their eyes. Nothing moved, not the wind, not the cats, the pool. They stared into it's depths, waiting and watching for a sign. "We need a sign, a message!" A battle scarred, skinny black tom yowled, one eye swollen shut. He slashed at the pool. "Send us something." "Have peace, Nightwhisker." A beautiful, slender tortoiseshell she-cat placed her tail-tip on the tom's shoulder. "We must have Patience." "I've waited long enough," the tomcat hissed gruffly. "My time has been over for moons and not one thing has happened!" "We will wait." Spottedleaf swept her eyes over the rest of the swath of cats. "We will all wait." "I believe you, Spottedleaf," a dark brown tabby she-cat mewed, "we must wait." The cats glanced at one another, whispering. They were immediately silenced when a cat hissed. The pool waved as if the wind was blowing on it. A metallic, green-black substance bubbled up from the middle of the pool and rippled itself to the shore, lapping at the cat's paws. A terrible stank of Crowfood and Twoleg rubbish rose from it, and where the substance touched the shore the sand was stained black. "Poison!" Nightwhisker yowled, stumbling backward. The Clan started caterwauling, moving away from the pool. The substance was now bubbling, steam rising from it. "Silence!" Spottedleaf snarled. "All of you silence!" Everyone fell silent. Spottedleaf was staring at the pond, for now the substance was gone, and a crystal clear picture of four sleeping apprentices from each clan was imprinted on the water. " Four stars will journey past the beyond, and save them in the time of need."

CHAPTER ONE Skypaw purrred as she warmed in a shaft of sunlight. Sunningrocks was beautiful at this time of year, and if you looked out, the trees would never end. Maple, dogwood, birch. The river and it's metallic waters, always flowing and playing is peacful symphony. Life was perfect. The apprentice stood up and stretched, arching her back and flexing her claws. The light breeze ruffled her fur, and her mouth watered as it carried along the tasty smell of squirrel. She dropped into a hunter's crouch, following the scent over to a large, ancient oak tree. It actually proved to be two squirrel, they grey-brown tails curled and their beady black eyes darting from side to side, looking for danger. Skypaw swiped her tounge over mouth, pinpointing where she would land with her tail. Say good-bye, squirrels! She bunched her muscles and with a strong, powerful shove of her hindlegs, she flew through the air, paws outstretched. The black she-cat crashed into a blur of black and white fur, tumbling head over heels. She shook her head, clearing her vision. Swiftpaw! She hissed at her sister. "Are you to blind to see that I was going after those squirrels?" "Are you blind enoughto see that I was already there." The slender she-cat pushed herself off the ground, glaring at Skypaw. "But I'm sur it was just my fault." Skypaw was about to retort a reply, but a terrible stank reached her nose, coming directly off Swiftpaw. "Eugh, you stink Swiftpaw!" "Mouse-bile," Swiftpaw replied, "I was off to wash my paws, but I decided to get a bite to eat first. But no thanks to you, my prey is gone." "You should be thanking me. It's against the Warrior Code to eat before you feed the Clan!" Swiftpaw yowled, her eyes narrowing. "Or are you really that mousebrained to break it?" Swiftpaw unsheathed her claws. "It's not like I was out hunting!" "Well, you might as well been!" Skypaw turned curtly, tail straight up, and walked away, fuming at her sister's disloyalty to the Warrior Code. _____ Skypaw padded into camp, carrying a mouse and a piegon by the tails. "How's the hunting, Skypaw?" Asked Sunspots, who was sharing tongues with Blackwhisker, her mate. Skypaw only dipped her head, for it would be silly to talk with her mouth full of Freshkill. Sunspots nodded, purring. Once Skypaw reached the Freshkill pile, she dropped her catch and sighed. Where was Swiftpaw? Surely she could've washed her paws in this time. She shrugged, heading over to the Apprentice's den. She curled in her nest, sighing. The she-cat shuddered as she felt an ice-cold stare burn into her, and she turned her head. Nightpaw was staring at her, his lip curled in anger. She flicked her ears, and the tom looked away. What's his problem?

CHAPTER TWO Swiftpaw didn't wait a heartbeat to dip her paws into the stream, letting the cool water rub off the strong-smelling liquid off her paws. She swiped her tongue over her muzzle, lapping up the last of her meal, a tender, juicy vole. And Skypaw'll never know! Hah! She smirked, lifting her paws out of the river. She bent down and lapped some up, but quickly pulled up her head when a funky taste filled her mouth. Shrugging, Swiftpaw waded into river, sighing. The cool water felt good against her sweaty body, and she purred. She was about to go in farther when she heard a earsplitting yowl. She looked up, only to be sprinted at by three RiverClan warriors, and one apprentice. She scrambled around and sprinted through the water, trying to get back onto ThunderClan territory. She was inches away from the bank when one of the RiverClanners pounced and pushed her into the shallow water, pressing her face into the mud. "Spy!" It hissed, sinking it's back claws into the apprentice's back. "How long have you been spying on us, apprentice?" "Wha? I - I'm not spying! I swear!" "Tell the truth, kittypet!" The cat hissed. "Have peace, Goldleaf. I'm sure she was doing no harm," A sweet, warm voice mewed, and Swiftpaw was relieved of the weight on her back. She flipped around and realized Waterfur, Reedwhistle, and Creeksong, but didn't know the small, gray tabby tom with white paws and bright amber eyes. -- TO BE CONTINUED --
