Chapter One

Night cast it's long and daunting shadows across the peaceful ThunderClan camp; accompanied by the rustle of the large trees surrounding it, and the slow, soft breathing of the cats inside their dens. The moon hung in the sky; part missing, like some cat had taken their claw and sliced part of it off. Other than that, it glowed brightly, highlighting certain parts of the forest with a white hint of light.

Along with the small, twinkling lights of Silverpelt, they illuminated the only shape in the ThunderClan camp that wasn't asleep. It was cat; but it wasn't a ThunderClan cat. It was a prisoner.

The dark ginger she-cat's eyes were narrowed into such slits of anger that their color was concealed, for now. Her long, ginger fur was matted from many months of being kept in the ThunderClan camp, after being captured by a passing patrol.

Stupid gits, she hissed in her mind, the thought seeming to chill even the midnight air around her. I will get out of this, somehow, and I promise you all that you'll pay!

Her eyes flew open at last; a shocking icy blue color pierced the air, glinting viciously with the light of revenge. But before she could even move, silent as a mouse another cat crept up from behind.

She had keen senses, and turned, but by then the cat had sprang from the bushes and attacked. She hissed, not caring that she would probably wake the slumbering ThunderClan camp, and then dug her claws into her attackers pelt. It was a tom, not from ThunderClan, with RiverClan scent, but though he had muscle, he was weakening, like a rogue.

"Get off of me you fool," she hissed while striking the other cats head with a sheathed paw. The effects dazed him, and she sprang back, her fur stained with his blood.

As he shook his head to clear it, she got a better look at her would-be opponent. He had long fur like hers, but it was golden in color, and his eyes were a dark blue. He was quite large and muscular like herself, but also like her, he had signs of weakening.

The cat turned to look at her, then blinked in shock. "You... don't look like a ThunderClan cat..." he meowed slowly.

The ginger she gave an indignant hiss. "As if I, a former rogue, would ever be welcome in their Clan other than as the prisoner I am; much less would I want to join these weaklings!"

He flicked his feathery tail and stared into her eyes. "I'm- or I was, a prisoner of RiverClan, but they left an apprentice on guard and I was able to escape. No one seems to be guarding you, why don't you escape? And if ThunderClan are so weak, then why are you able to be held here?" he challenged.

She gave a long, low hiss. "Watch yourself, fool!" she spat. "Don't be mistaken, my guard is probably awakening the rest of ThunderClan now, thanks to you. And they are many, you try having twenty or so cats ambushing you!"

He blinked. "Sorry, I never thought of that. And I guess I can't say much, considering I was a prisoner of RiverClan..."

Her gaze, though still cold, assumed a less threatening glare. "But you are free, now. I am not, though I will try to escape soon, I assure you. When I was captured, the band of rogues I controlled were forced to split and join the Clans, to assume a low profile. I've been plotting for months, but I think someone like you is just what I need..."

He stiffened slightly. "What do you mean?"

"Come with me, if you like. We can try to run now, while they're busy gathering the Clan to ambush us. We'll run, and find some rogues to start a band with us. Then we can get out revenge on the Clans that kept us prisoner for so long."

The cat looked thoughtful, then nodded. "Alright, that sounds like a plan," he admitted. "What's your name, by the way? Mine's Lightningstorm."

She gave him a long look, as if assessing him. "Names are a powerful device," she considered, "but since you've told me yours..." she meowed, then raised her head slightly with pride. "I am Emberflame."

Chapter Two

Lightningstorm felt his fur start to rise at the way she spoke her own name; with such confidence and power; he couldn't explain the feelings he got at the sound. But he forced it to lie flat so she wouldn't be suspicious, though he was slightly nervous around her, he didn't think she needed to know that just yet.

Emberflame was intelligent though, years of being a rogue and studying her enemies approach had made her keen to the senses of others. His fear-scent was faint and well-concealed, but still she felt it. Amusement flickered briefly through her icy blue eyes as she watched him closely.

Lightningstorm flicked his tail self-consciously as she stared at him; her gaze was piercing and unblinking. To conceal his nervousness, he got up from where he had been sitting and flicked his tail. "Well, when are we leaving?"

Emberflame hissed quietly in fury. "Shut up fool, or they'll hear you!" She glanced around her, movements cautious and tense. After a moment, her stiff muscles relaxed and she sat down slowly. "Be more quiet next time," she hissed, rolling her icy eyes in frustration.

Lightningstorm dipped his head in embarrassment, glad that she couldn't tell how he was feeling at the moment. He felt like she was a powerful Clan leader, not just a rogue prisoner he had managed to take by surprise. "Sorry," he meowed, still staring at his paws.

Emberflame's eyes lit up with amusement, and she flicked him in the shoulder with her dark ginger tail, her fur flashing like a beacon against his golden pelt. "Oh, forget about it," she meowed, then said seriously, "we'll leave as soon as possible, but we must visit the other Clans to check for any former rogues, or willing candidates for our band."

He nodded understandingly, what she said made sense. He was pretty sure there'd be a few RiverClan cats who;d want to join them, and there was Leafstream, the other tom they were keeping prisoner.

Seeing his consent, Emberflame stood and started toward one of the dens, flicking her plumed ginger tail to indicate that he follow. He did so silently, immediately sinking back into a stalking crouch, so his pawsteps wouldn't he heard by some of the restless ThunderClan cat's sure to be asleep in the dens.

They ducked inside the first den they came across. The mewling and squealing of the small kits as they slept brushed his ears, and Lightningstorm knew even before he stepped inside that they were in the nursery.

A single queen slept on her side, her three kits snuggled against her as they slept. Emberflame crept over to her side as quiet as a mouse and took took a small, golden she-kit in her jaws. She padded back to Lightningstorm, handed him the kit and whispered, "She's blind, but we can help her through that, she's only a kit."

He nodded as she went back, this time taking a snow colored kit. The tom's eyes opened for a second, revealing a brilliant amber color, but he closed them a moment later and went back to sleep.

Both cats heaved a sigh of relief; but their happiness was short lived as a sharp scent invaded the den. They turned to see a massive orange tom with three white paws glaring at them; his emerald eyes glowing in the darkness.

His voice was low and deep as he meowed furiously, "What do you think you're doing?"

Chapter Three

Both Emberflame and Lightningstorm turned sharply at the arrival of the other cat. Emberflame's icy eyes widened with shock, but she managed to be gentle when she laid the still sleeping Snowkit on the ground. "Gingerheart," she hissed, her voice no more than a whisper.

"Emberflame," the massive tom replied, unsheathing his claws on the hard earth, the massive paws they belonged to looked large enough to crush a kit effortlessly. His emerald eyes were cold as they passed over Lightningstorm. "I would like to know why you and this other rogue are invading the ThunderClan nursery and trying to steal our kits. Brookfeather, wake up!"

The silver tabby queen that lay on her side, still accompanied by a small, green eyed kit with dark brown fur the color of mud; opened her eyes and lifted her head slightly.

Seeing her kits with the two rogues, and the deputy standing in the entrance, she sprang to her paws, accidentally waking the small kit, whose eyes widened in fear as he mewed in shock. "Hush, Shrewkit," she meowed frantically, her eyes wide. "Gingerheart, what's going on?"

"This prisoner and her rogue friend are trying to make off with your kits, but luckily the noise the rogue made woke me. Now Emberflame, if you want to remain a part of ThunderClan, even as a prisoner, I suggest you give up the kits now."

Emberflame raised her head proudly with an indignant hiss. "Why would I want to live with the Clan who has kept me prisoner? With this life, I'd rather be exiled!"

Gingerheart flexed his claws, his emerald eyes glittering with rage. "Very well then. I will have to keep you here by force!" The massive tom leapt at Emberflame, but she was not much smaller than him, though she was weakening steadily, her muscles still held out when he barreled into her. Our of the corner of her eyes, she saw Brookfeather attack Lightningstorm, anger at her kits near-kidnapping burning in her eyes.

Emberflame and Lightningstorm, though they fought like TigerClan warriors, were losing, and they were just about to receive the final blow before defeat when a flash of black fur shot past, knocking the large deputy away from Emberflame. She got to her paws and nodded thanks to her rescuer, and looked to see a small white apprentice by Lightningstorm's side.

"Are you alright?" the black she-cat questioned. Her amber eyes surveyed Emberflame's appearance critically, then she nodded with an accepting gaze. "I'm Darkflower, and this is my apprentice, Frostpaw." She flicked her tail at the white she-cat, who purred a greeting.

"I'm fine," Emberflame meowed with a nod at Frostpaw, "but I really think we should save the introductions for later, because while the attack left them stunned, our little "friends" here aren't going to stay down for long!" She took Snowkit in her jaws and rushed out of the den, followed closely by Lightningstorm, Frostpaw and Darkflower.

When she awoke, Brookfeather opened her eyes to see only Shrewkit beside her. She raised her grief-stricken amber gaze to the roof of the den, which just concealed the starlight. "I will avenge my kits!"

Chapter Four

Dawn's light poked through the trees, causing small spots of light on the dark forest floor by the time the four cats stopped running. Her large ginger paws pounded against the ground as Emberflame skidded to a halt, gently laying the kit; Snowkit, on the ground. She swiveled her head around to wait for her companions.

Lightningstorm and Darkflower arrived next, side by side, with Frostpaw close behind. Lightningstorm laid Lightkit beside her brother before gazing at Emberflame and meowing, "What now?"

Emberflame flicked her plumed ginger tail, icy blue eyes glittering. "We travel to the other Clans, and round up recruits. Someone needs to stay with the kits, the rest of us will go. And I'm definitely going."

Darkflower blinked, she was used to taking orders from her Clan leader; but Emberflame directed her orders with power; definitely expecting them to be followed. She surveyed the other she-cat for a moment longer before dipping her head gracefully and meowing, "I'm sure that Frostpaw would watch them?" She turned to her apprentice, whose eyes flashed with annoyance, regardless of how she dipped her head in acceptance.

Emberflame purred slightly and nudged Frostpaw with her shoulder. "You'll get your chance; I promise," she meowed, before flicking her tail to the others and bounding into the tree's, in the direction of RiverClan territory.

Deep blue eyes burning in anticipation, golden fur rippling as his muscles bunched together when he ran; Lightningstorm watched Emberflame as they neared closer to RiverClan's camp. She's so powerful, he noted, remembering her strength when he had pounced on her. A good leader for our band, indeed.

When they finally bounded into the RiverClan camp, Darkflower's eyes were reflecting her tiredness, and her black fur stuck up in the wind. But she stood as strong as the others as they snuck through the camp. When they were only a few pawsteps in Emberflame flicked her tail in front of the others, barring their way in an indication that they should stop. Both did, and copied Emberflame when she swiveled her ears toward the sound of voices.

The voice of a tom, quite defiant, rose from an area near the edge of the camp, concealed by a den. "I swear Smokestar, I don't know where he is!"

A hiss came in reply. Another tom, this one's voice much lighter, meowed furiously, "Leafstream, if you're plotting something with him, and I discover you, I won't hesitate to exile you for good!"

Lightningstorm turned to Darkflower and Emberflame, then meowed, "That's Smokestar, the Clan leader. He's talking to Leafstream, another prisoner."

Emberflame blinked her ice blue eyes, staring into his dark blue ones, then said, "Lead the way."

Lightningstorm nodded, and the other followed him as he bounded behind the den. Standing there was a dark, smoky gray tom with glittering green eyes, facing a dark brown tom, also with green eyes, but a deeper shade; like an emerald. "Thanks, Leafstream, but you don't need to cover for me anymore," Lightningstorm meowed coolly as the other cats turned to him. "I walk free now."
