"Feathertail!" Crowpaw's desperate yowl rang throughout the cave. Like lost sheep following their flock, a few remaining rocks clattered down the cold cave wall, trailing after their fellows, which had just rained from the ceiling onto the life bellow. "Feathertail!" Crowpaw cried again. Where the cave's roof had just been, adorned with stalactites and dripping with moisture, now there was only bare rock, and the covering lay on the floor, a heap of rubble. To the little cats, it was almost a small mountain, but Crowpaw didn't care. He was blinded by something, and the wild light of it shone in his eyes. He bunched his muscles and sprang onto the rocks strewn all over the cave floor, not caring as sharp rocks sliced his pads. Furiously worried, he dug with the strength of Lionclan, flinging rocks out behind him that hung suspended in the air for a moment before they came crashing down to earth, sending sharp clacks around the cave.
The others had just watched, transfixed, as the world had caved in around them, dragging a glint of silver with it. As the dust cleared, they continued to stand as if their paws were growing into the floor. Finally, as Crowpaw began to attempt to claw his way through the heap of stones, Stormfur jolted awake. His gray fur was plastered with dust and dirt, and there were splashes of blood on his coat from the terror that had, in fact, happened just minutes ago, but to him, seemed moons away. All he knew was that his sister was crushed under all this, and he wasn't going to just sit there like a terrified kit. "Crowpaw! Move over!" he hissed, his eyes bright with fear.
The smokey black apprentice didn't shoot a sharp reply as usual. Instead, he complied obediently, scooting around to make room for the warrior. They dug like trapped dogs, silent but determined. Crowpaw let out a snarl of frustration as he reached a larger rock he couldn't push on his own. He snapped around to glare at Squirrelpaw, Tawnypelt, and Brambleclaw, who still stood rigid, as frozen as the rocks, and just as dusty. "Well? Help us!" he growled. "Come over here now and dig her out before my claws have to convince you!"
Squirrelpaw gave out a cry as if she was engaging in battle and leaped to join the others. Brambleclaw and Tawnypelt followed. All the chosen cats; best friends, more than friends, family, shoved and pushed the rocks. The Tribe Of Rushing Water's eyes gleamed from the darkness of the cave, dull with grief, but as they watched, they grew lighter with a spark of interest.
"Hang on Feathertail! We are almost there! Just hang on!" yowled Crowpaw. He knew time was running out. "No," he hissed under his breath. "I will not lose her! I will not lose my Silver Bird!" With a last cry of defiance, he gathered all his strength and threw away the last few stones that were crushing Feathertail's broken body. His sides heaving, he bent down to lick Feathertail's cheek. "Wake up Feathertail. Don't leave me!" he whispered.
Feathertail's normally clean, silky silver coat was torn and red and black with dust and blood. She was bleeding heavily from multiple cuts, and her leg was bent at a terribly unnatural angle. As Crowpaw crooned over her, trying to bring her away from Starclan's path, the closed eyes suddenly blinked open to reveal to crystal clear pools of blue. "Crowpaw?" Her voice was scratchy and faint, and she shuddered with the effort of speaking.
"Shhhh! You don't have to speak. I am here now, and so is Stormfur. You are going to be OK. I promise." His heart was pounding with a mixture of relief and terror, and his stomach churned as if caught in a violent wave. "Just stay here with me, Feathertail. You know that the other cats all are fur balls, and we need you if we are going to show the slightest scrap of dignity."
All the weak and wounded she-cat could do was nod her head ever so slightly, an infinitesimally small movement, but acknowledgment all the same. Her whiskers twitched at Crowpaw's joke, but then she let out a small sigh and closed her eyes once more. Without their strong blue light, the whole cave seemed to grow dimmer.
Crowpaw gasped and laid his head on her chest, gently. He felt her heart drum quietly as if raindrops were pattering on the hard ground. It's beat was faint but regular, sometimes emitting a stronger pulse, as if Feathertail was fighting back, desperate to stay here with her friends, her kin. Crowpaw's neck ached along with his paws, but he didn't care. He was oblivious to the pain, even as his cracked pads seeped blood onto the gray stones. "It is not your turn to join Starclan! Don't leave me, Feathertail. I've never met another cat like you, and I'll never meet another. You are my Silver Bird."
