Chapter 1
Flowerclaw awoke in a dimly lit cave. She pushed herself up, not wanting to stretch her injured left shoulder. She hoped for a better time today, but wondered if that was at all possible. Yesterday, the clan's most senior warrior turned evil, and started fighting for another clan during battle. Flowerclaw had found out on time to tell Gatorstar, but not in time to save her own kits.
Flowerclaw winced in pain at the thought. Her two kits, Snowkit and Brownkit, had been killed by Fallenleaf when he turned evil. No cat had noticed, but Flowerclaw had a way of knowing things. Once she had left to tell Gatorstar, she felt guilty leaving them with the other queens, and even more guilty when she remembered that those two queens she had left her kits with were Fallenleaf's two sisters.
When Flowerclaw returned, all the kits were dead. Flowerclaw felt so bad, she left her clan and gone to a deserted place high in the mountains. She had wished her mate,Weedtail, the best of hope, but he had stayed at camp. Flowerclaw had begged him to go, but Weedtail hadn't budged.
Flowerclaw looked outside at the world around her and wished for a better life as a loner. Her claws flexed in and out on the hard dirt ground, and she flexed her muscles for a morning hunt. It was warm and sunny today;Flowerclaw felt confident that her hunt today would be more than she could eat.
She raced off into the field below. She would pass through it and into a small forest, where she could hunt at ease. Flowerclaw's paws thumpeed hard on the barren ground as Flowerclaw tried not to fall over on the steep sided slope. Her claws dug into the ground with every step, and she began to panic. She had never felt like she was slipping, but now she felt like her world was fixing to come crashing down.
Flowerclaw felt relieved when she reached the bottom, but even more relieved when no cat leaped out of the bushes. She was completely alone. Flowerclaw sqiunted her eyes as she continued to creep along the moor. She wished that she could catch prey here, closer to home, but no luck. She was as slow as a snail.
