Chapter one
"No, no, no, Bluepaw. You're doing it all wrong!" Mewed Hawkstar. She was attempting to teach her apprentice, Bluepaw, a fighting move. "You don't swipe under my chin, you swipe at my chin!"
"I don't want to hurt you!" Bluepaw cried.
"Just keep your claws sheathed and I will be fine. Now, try again." Hawkstar instructed.
"Alright. I'll try." Bluepaw lashed out with her paw and tried to strike Hawkstar on the chin. Hawkstar dodged it easily.
"Try to be faster next time." The EarthClan leader mewed. "Okay." Bluepaw again swept her paw towards Hawkstar's chin. She was much faster and this time she struck.
"Very good! I didn't have enough time to dodge!" Hawkstar praised. "Training again tomorrow at sunhigh."
Bluepaw bounded off to the apprentice's den to join her best friend, Skypaw. Skypaw's mentor, Swiftstream, came to sit with Hawkstar. "That Bluepaw." The EarthClan cat said. "Full of boundless energy."
"Yes she is. She will make a fine warrior someday."
"If she ever gets a long enough attention span to listen to training!" Swiftstream laughed. Hawkstar mewed with laughter and walked out of the camp with Swiftstream, Darkpelt, Graystorm and Skypaw for the sunset territory border patrol.
Hawkstar felt fur rub against her side. Her mate, Graystorm, came beside her. She and her mate had a deep bond and every cat could sense it. After they had walked for a while along the WaterClan border, which was marshland, Graystorm went off a little ways to look around. Hawkstar sat down on a rock. Then she heard Graystorm emit a frantic cry: "Dogs! Dogs!" She could hear two growling, snapping dogs crashing through the forest. Graystorm came into view. Running for his life from the dogs only two fox-lengths behind him. "Run! Run Hawkstar! Save yourselves! I will lead them away from camp!!" Graystorm turned around and pelted the other way. The others ran to camp while Hawkstar stayed behind. She hoped that her mate would make it out alive.
Chapter two
"No, Graystorm! I won't leave you!" Hawkstar cried.
To her despair, her mate had already disappeared into the forest.
Later, Hawkstar sat in her den. She could not stop thinking about Graystorm. About how she had not tried to fight the dogs. About how he could be dead. They had never even had a chance to have kits. A small, weak meow brought her back from her deep thought. She rushed out into the clearing to find her Graystorm. He was bleeding, scarred and was having trouble walking. He collapsed on the hard rock floor of the mountain camp.
"Graystorm!"
He looked up at her. "Did I do it?" he asked weakly. "Are the dogs gone?"
"Yes, you did very well."
Graystorm smiled, then laid his head down and closed his eyes.
"Graystorm, no!" Hawkstar cried. "Please don't go! The clan needs you!"
Graystorm lifted his head, and spoke to her, new strength in his voice. "My sister."
"Swiftstream?"
"Yes." Replied Graystorm, his voice getting weaker. "She is destined to be your deputy.
"I want you to be deputy!"
"Do you not trust your own deputy's last words?" With that, he quietly laid down, and left the clan. Hawkstar howled with grief. The rest of the warriors came to see what happened. Then the whole camp fell silent.
Later, the cats who had known Graystorm the closet sat vigil for the fallen warrior. They groomed him one last time, then the elders took his body to be buried outside camp.
Hawkstar climbed up to her branch in the Hightree. "Swiftstream," She called. "You are now EarthClan's deputy."
Chapter three
"And the stars up there are known as Silverpelt. And that is where are warrior ancestors live. It is called StarClan." Hawkstar explained to Bluepaw.
"You mean like, like angel cats?"
"Sort of. Warriors have their own Heaven. They can also visit your dreams and they are always watching over us."
"Who all is up there from EarthClan?"
"Many. More recently there is Redfur, Brownpelt, Bluestorm and now, Graystorm."
"Wow."
"Yes."
"Hey Bluepaw!" Called Skypaw. "Want to come play?"
Bluepaw looked at Hawkstar and the leader nodded. Bluepaw joined Skypaw and they went to the apprentice's den together.
That night, Hawkstar dreamed. She woke up in a forest that she recognized. This was the land where StarClan dwelled. To the east were the plains, to the west, marsh, to the north, mountains. Then, a familiar sent filled her nose. It was Graystorm, standing on a boulder before her! As she jumped up on the boulder to greet him, he leaped off. She chased him through the dark woods, following the glow of the stars that filled his pelt. She leaped over rocks, swam through rivers, climbed over many a boulder, waded through streams and walked across logs to try and catch up with her mate. No matter how much she tried, Graystorm was always a few fox-lengths ahead of her. He turned to look at the EarthClan leader, he smiled and his orange eyes shone mischievously. Before she could say anything, he was off once more. On and on she ran, and finally the gray cat stopped by a wide river and turned to face her.
"Graystorm! It is a good thing we do not tire in this realm or I would have lost you!"
"Welcome, Hawkstar. I had to lead you here somehow. There is someone who wishes to see you." He stepped aside and a small, wiry orange she-cat stepped out of the trees. Hawkstar gasped. "Earthstar! The first leader of EarthClan!"
"Yes." replied the cat-spirit. "I was, but I have found a leader better than I or any leaders of our clan before us."
"Really? Who?"
Earthstar looked her straight in the eye and smiled. "You."
"Me? I am nothing!"
Both of the StarClan cats went off and disappeared into the darkness of the night.
"Wait! Come back! I do not understand!"
Hawkstar slowly walked over to a patch of soft moss, laid her head down and drifted into sleep. Just as she was almost asleep, a voice pierced the darkness.
"Hawkpaw! Hawkpaw! Training today!"
"What is it?" Hawkstar mumbled sleepily.
"Training, Hawkpaw! You cannot oversleep again."
She looked up into the face of a large orange-brown tabby tom. She was in the EarthClan camp, but she was looking into the face of her mentor, Redfur, who had joined StarClan long ago. She was an apprentice again!
Chapter four
Hawkstar had woken up in another dream! She looked around. She saw her old den, her old nest, and her old denmate, Graypaw.
"Graypaw?"
"Hawkpaw," He meowed. "You need to listen to Redfur. He is your mentor."
"He's right." Said Redfur. "So I suggest you do it now."
Hawkstar scrambled up from her nest. "Yes, Redfur, of course!"
Graystorm's mentor, Bluestorm, walked into the den.
"Come on Graypaw! up, up, up! Training today!"
The apprentices and their mentors went hunting. As they walked, Hawkstar began to talk to Graystorm.
"Um, hi, Grayst- uh, I mean Graypaw."
"Hello, Hawkstar." "You know my name?"
"Of course I do."
Then everything went dark. Hawkstar awoke in her old den again. She noticed Graypaw was missing and went outside.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Hightree!"
She heard the yowl of Gorsestar, EarthClan's previous leader.
"We are gathered today to name two apprentices their warrior name. Graypaw, step forward. I am sorry your mentor is not here with you. She will be watching from StarClan."
Bluestorm had died in her sleep last night of a mystery illness.
"Graypaw, do you take the oath and devote yourself to your clan, will you follow the warrior code?"
"I will."
"Then Graypaw, you will be known as Graystorm, to honor the mentor that helped you earn this. Hawkpaw, step forward." She was asked the same question. "I will."
"Hawkpaw, you will now be known as Hawkclaw. For your claws are as quick as a flying hawk in battle."
Hawkstar nodded. The clan started to cheer. She walked over to Graystorm.
"Ah," He said. "There you are. I need you."
"Um, alright."
"Listen Hawkstar." The camp faded away and was replaced by the forest of StarClan. "Gorsestar was right, you are as fast as a hawk in battle, but it will not be enough to save a cat you love." He faded away.
"Wait! Come back!" Hawkstar called desperately. "Please!"
He would not return. Knowing this, she laid down and went to sleep.
Chapter five
Hawkstar woke up and yawned. It had been a long and hard night of dreaming of her beloved Graystorm. She missed him dearly. She organized a dawn patrol and a hunting patrol. Then she walked into the apprentice's den. Swiftstream and Berryclaw were already there.
"Skypaw!" Swiftstream whispered in her apprentice's ear. "Wake up dear, time for training."
"Come on, Brightpaw!" Berryclaw told his already awake apprentice. The brown and black-spotted cat lead his apprentice out of the den.
"Training today, Bluepaw." Hawkstar said.
Bluepaw looked up sleepily. "Already? It seems like I just fell asleep!"
Hawkstar laughed. "Silly kit! Come on, then!" She lead Bluepaw out of the camp and into the woods.
"Alright, Bluepaw. Ready to hunt?"
"Yes please!"
"Then stalk that mouse, and stay quiet!"
Bluepaw slowly crept toward the mouse-prey. Her eyes never strayed from it, and her ears were always aimed in it's direction. Then, when she got close, she pounced. She trapped the mouse between her paws.
Just then, Hawkstar heard an all too familiar snarl.
"Dogs! Run Bluepaw! Run back to camp and warn the others! I will distract them!"
Bluepaw ran through the trees back to camp. A huge, brown dog crashed through a bush right in front of Hawkstar. The EarthClan leader bolted away from camp. The dog was only two fox-lengths behind her. Then, memories came back. Would she suffer the same fate as Graystorm? If she did join StarClan tonight, what would her clan do without her? Then her sister, Fleetfoot, sprinted up to the dog, hissing. Then the prophecy came back to Hawkstar. Gorsestar was right, you are as fast as a hawk in battle, but it will not be enough to save a cat you love.
"No! Fleetfoot!"
Fleetfoot leaped onto the dog's back. The huge beast craned it's head back and snapped at her. Hawkstar lunged. She bit the dog's neck and did not let go. She slashed with her claws and bit with her teeth but the dog easily threw her off of it. It had a open wound and was losing a lot of blood. With one final effort, it reached back and bit Fleetfoot's neck. Hawkstar could only watch in terror as her sister let out a howl of pain and fell to the ground, limp. The dog let out a gurgle, then collapsed, dead. Hawkstar rushed over to her sister's side. "Fleetfoot!" She yowled. She tried desperately to revive her sister, but it was too late.
"Why must this happen?" She cried.
Bluepaw and Swiftstream, Darkpelt, Firestorm, Brightpaw and Dawnmoon came running toward her. Swiftstream knelt beside her leader.
"Hawkstar, I, I failed you!"
Hawkstar looked up. "What?"
"I should have gotten here in time! Oh, Hawkstar! I am so sorry!"
"It is not your fault." She looked at the dead dog. "It is the dog's." As the other cats carried Fleetfoot's body back to camp, Firestorm slowed down and walked beside her leader.
"So sorry, Hawkstar." She slowly padded back to camp.
Chapter six
Hawkstar dreamed once more, only this time, she was not in the forest of StarClan. She was near the Great Waters somewhere else. She saw a ripple in the water and a silver-gray cat waded out of the water as if she had come from nowhere. Her violet eyes looked Hawkstar over and she sat down on the shore.
"Fleetfoot!" Said Hawkstar.
Fleetfoot dipped her head in greeting. "Hello, my sister. It is good to see you again."
"Fleetfoot, this, this isn't StarClan's sea."
"No, it's not. I am exploring."
"Exploring?"
"Yes. StarClan have let me explore the depths of Silverpelt. We only know of a little of our vast skies."
"Fleetfoot, I miss you so much!"
Fleetfoot rubbed against her sister. "There is no reason for worry." She purred. "Joining StarClan is nothing to fear, but now I must go."
Hawkstar licked her sister's salt-water drenched ear. "I love you, Fleetfoot."
"And I love you, Hawkstar. I will always be watching over you." Her sister looked at her with violet eyes that shone like the moon. Then, as quick as she had come, she was gone.
Hawkstar awoke in her den. One thought still lingered in her mind, how can we not know all of Silverpelt? She slowly padded out of her den. The EarthClan leader walked over to the medicine cat's den. Firestorm was a good friend to her and Hawkstar could trust her with her dreams. She peered through the vines that draped over the thorn entrance to Firestorm's den. The medicine cat was sitting by a small pool of water, staring at it's rippling surface.
"Firestorm?" She said quietly.
Firestorm looked up. "Hawkstar, you're up early today. It is not even dawn yet."
"Yes, well. I had a dream from StarClan, and I thought I could tell you."
"Okay, go ahead."
"Well, I have had a number of dreams,"
"Tell me each and every one."
"I had the first the night after Graystorm's death. He came to me and showed me Earthstar, and Earthstar told me I was a better leader than any cat before me, then, I woke up in another dream. It was Graystorm's and my warrior ceremony. He came to me and told me my claws were fast in battle, but it would not be enough to save a cat I loved. That cat was Fleetfoot. Last night, she came to me. She said she was an explorer. Finding places in Silverpelt we do not know of. Then she was gone."
Firestorm pondered this for a moment, then looked a her leader, her blue eyes filled with wonder and awe.
"You seem to have a special connection with StarClan, even better than a medicine cat's!"
Chapter seven
Hawkstar was shocked at Firestorm's words.
"How can I be better than a medicine cat? They have the most special connection, not leaders!"
Firestorm nodded. "I know. That is what I do not understand. I will think on this." She walked to the back of the den and began staring at the pool of water again.
Hawkstar said goodbye and left the den. She went to the apprentice's den to wake Bluepaw, but when she arrived, she was gone. Hawkstar shot out of camp and began searching. Calling for her apprentice as she ran.
"Bluepaw! Bluepaw! Where are you?"
Then she heard a fait groan, it was coming from a group of large boulders. "Bluepaw?" She followed the sound and came across Bluepaw sprawled on the ground. She rushed over to her.
"Bluepaw! What happened?"
"I was climbing," Bluepaw groaned. "then my paw slipped, and I fell off." "You shouldn't have gone off without my permission in the first place. Then maybe this wouldn't have happened!"
"I'm so sorry, Hawkstar! It won't happen again!" Bluepaw promised as she got to her feet.
"It better not." Meowed Hawkstar.
When they got back to camp, Firestorm ran out of her den. "What happened to you, Bluepaw?" The medicine cat asked worriedly.
"I fell off a boulder, nothing is bruised or broken. My leg just hurts."
Hawkstar glared at her apprentice. "You will be punished for this."
Bluepaw looked down. "I know, Hawkstar."
"Now," Said her mentor. "Let's go to my den and I can train you." "What are we learning today?" Bluepaw asked eagerly once they had gone inside.
"Today, we are talking about the four great clans that lived in the mountains by the lake not far from here before us. They set the foundation for the three clans today. The first one is ThunderClan. Here is how they founded EarthClan."
Chapter eight
Firestar, leader of ThunderClan, sat on the Highrock in their mountain camp. He was waiting for the clan cats to sit under the Highrock. He was making a life-changing decision. Here came the warriors, Brakenleaf, Nightsong, Sparrowflight, his mate Sandstorm, and Cloudtail. His deputy, Brambleclaw, had been killed in battle yesterday. ThunderClan's new deputy, Earthclaw, was sitting under the Highrock. Now the apprentices came and sat. They were Hazelpaw, Nightpaw and Eaglepaw. Then the elders sat, and the Queens brought their kits. The medicine cat, Leafpool, a very old cat, sat with her sister, Squirrelflight. Squirrelflight was Brambleclaw's mate and the daughter of Firestar. Once everyone had sat, he started talking.
"Cats of ThunderClan, as you know, I am on my last life and I will soon join StarClan. And this part of the mountains is slowly being taken over by Twolegs. So we must create a new clan, a clan that is situated in a mountain camp far away. Where no Twolegs can find them. RiverClan and WindClan agree. ShadowClan, however, refuses to come. Our new clan will be lead by our new leader, Earthstar. I must stay behind, for I am too weak to travel. Tonight Earthstar will go to the Moonpool and receive his nine lives from StarClan. Then, EarthClan shall be born."
Chapter nine
"And then WindClan made StoneClan and RiverClan formed WaterClan." Hawkstar told Bluepaw. Each clan was named after the previous clan's deputy."
"What about ShadowClan?"
"They stayed in the mountains. Perhaps it is good they did not come, they were cats whose hearts were as cold as the wind that swept over their territory. No one knows what became of them. Now, you'd better go to the apprentice's den and rest your leg. It needs rest to heal."
"Yes, Hawkstar." Despite her injured leg, she raced off to the apprentice's den.
Hawkstar organized a sunhigh patrol and a hunting patrol. She decided to visit Firestorm and see what she could do to help Bluepaw's leg. As she peered into the medicine cat's den, Firestorm was facing the back of the den staring into space.
"Firestorm?"
Firestorm looked up. "Oh! Hawkstar!"
"What were you doing?"
"Um, I was, thinking about herbs."
"Okay, do you have one that can help Bluepaw's leg?"
"Of course!" The ginger she-cat padded to the wide crack in the rock, reached in and came out with a mouthful of leaves. "Here, she said." Laying them at Hawkstar's paws. "Give her these."
"Alright. Thank you, Firestorm." Hawkstar walked out of the den. She wondered why Firestorm had just been sitting there, staring at the back of the cave like it was the most interesting thing on Earth. Then she stopped, a wiry orange she-cat was standing before her, and stars shone in her pelt.
"Greetings, Hawkstar."
Hawkstar stared at the cat. "Hello, Earthstar."
"I am here about your sister, Fleetfoot."
"What about her?"
"She has disappeared."
Chapter ten
"What?" Meowed Hawkstar.
"I am so sorry. She went off to explore and she never came back. We fear she may be in other skies that StarClan do not walk in."
"That is impossible! She can't be gone!"
Earthstar's eyes clouded with sadness. "I am so sorry." Then she faded away into nothing.
"No." Hawkstar whispered. "She can't be gone. She can't be!"
Bluepaw padded up to her. "Hi, Hawkstar."
Then Hawkstar remembered the herbs. "Here," She said, pushing them toward her apprentice with her paw. "eat these."
Bluepaw chewed the leaves. "Yuck! These taste bad."
"They will help your leg. Come to my den and we can train."
On the way to the den, Swiftstream ran up to her leader. "Hawkstar, can I talk with you for a second?"
"Of course." They went to a corner of the camp and sat down.
"Have you noticed how Firestorm has been acting?" The deputy whispered.
"I have," Hawkstar quietly replied. "She just stares at her pool of water or the wall of her den."
"Well, she told me and she wanted me to tell you as well. Just don't tell anyone else."
"I won't."
"She is seeing StarClan cats."
"I see."
"They will not speak to her though."
"Alright."
"Hey Swiftstream!" Called Darkpelt.
"Got to go." The deputy left. Hawkstar took Bluepaw into her den. Then she began to tell her about WindClan.
Chapter eleven
Onestar, the WindClan leader, was sitting on a large boulder in the center of the WindClan mountain camp. The clan was sitting under the boulder, and the deputy, Stonerock, a gray tom, was sitting off to the side.
"WindClan, I have decided to move the clan to a safer place. We will be traveling with ThunderClan, now known as EarthClan. Firestar and I shall stay behind, on our last lives we are too weak to travel. WindClan will be known as StoneClan, and shall be lead by Stonestar. He will travel to the Moonpool tonight and receive his nine lives from StarClan.
"Onestar! Why must we do this? We are happy with our home now!" Called Badgerfang, a black and white warrior she-cat.
"If we stay here the Twolegs will destroy us!"
After he said that, all the cats fell silent. Satisfied but grieving, Onestar padded down into his den.
Chapter twelve:
Hawkstar went on about RiverClan….
Mistystar, leader of RiverClan had called a clan meeting. Her deputy, Watertail, listened eagerly. She heard meows of shock as she addressed the clan. "We cannot stay here, we must move the clan. I, on my last life, am incapable of traveling. Like Onestar and Firestar, I shall stay behind. Watertail must lead you. She will get her nine lives and become Waterstar. She will lead you to mountains not far from here, but far enough so Twolegs will not bother us. You will travel with WindClan, now known as StoneClan, and ThunderClan, now EarthClan. It will be a perilous journey, but it is best for the clan."
"Mistystar," Watertail said. "Are you sure I am capable of leading the clan on such a journey?"
Mistystar looked her deputy straight in the eye, and with full trust and truth, spoke.
"I have faith in you."

Chapter two
"No, Graystorm!
