The night was gone and the pink dawn was not far off as a group of four cat's picked their way through the lush undergrowth, delicately placing paws as if one wrong step could shatter the peaceful morning.
One of them, a young ginger she-cat stopped, her long coat waving in the cool air, whiskers wildly swirling.
"Why have you stopped?" Another asked, a brown tabby, while the others turned to look at her.
"This isn't right, Autumnleaf. Silverfang and Thunderheart already searched. There's no sign of anything StarClan has warned us about," the young cat meowed to Autumnleaf, while the other two raised their eyes in surprise at the youngest cats' words.
Autumnleaf loomed over her, green eyes balls of fire.
"Squirrelflight, we will not stop searching! If you are so reluctant, why don't you go back to camp where you belong?" Her words brought a chill to Squirrelflights blood.
Did this cat honestly think that whatever StarClan was warning them about was going to just pop up in front of them?
Autumnleaf whisked around and stalked off, her pawsteps loud and clear as she stormed off with the other two following, Squirrelflight left standing alone, the pale pink light striking her fur, transforming it into a ball of faint flame, her ears outlined in gold. The only thing different was her one snowy paw.
A moment later, yowls ahead sent her rushing into the undergrowth, all beauty in the morning shattered.
"Squirrelflight run!" one of the cats mewed, shouldering her aside.
"Tealeaf, what's-" Squirrelflight stammered as an overpowering scent of cats reached her scent glands.
"No questions. Go! Mudshadow and Autumnleaf are coming. Go!" The pretty she-cat growled, nudging the young cat to move.
"No. I'm not leaving Mudshadow and Autumnleaf! If it's rouges, they're going to get a nasty surprise!" Squirrelflight hissed, unsheathing her claws.
Tealeaf stepped back and studied her.
"If you are going, I want you to know that I'm coming too! It's four rouges. We were ambushed just after leaving you behind."
Both cats charged together towards the battle cries.
But, already, it was too late.
Squirrelflight grabbed onto a thick black tomcat, hissing while Tealeaf stood over Mudshadow, who was leaning heavily against an oak tree.
The tomcat scratched at Squirrelflight, his claws slicing the bridge of her nose. Blood spattered out of it and into Squirrelflight's eyes.
Blindly leaping foward, she barreled into him, her teeth embeded into his neck. Until...until she killed him mercilessly. Coldly.
Standing over her fallen enemy, Squirrelflight shook the blood from her eyes, and scanned around the trees.
The rouge scent was rapidly fading, replaced by the scent of blood.
"Mudshadow! Wake up!"
Squirrelflight turned around slowly, and then, stopped dead.
Her best friend was lying against the roots of the oak, Autumnleaf leaned over her. Tealeaf hovered in the back, casting glances at the black and brown splotched warrior who now bled freely from a nasty wound on her neck on the morning ground.
Squirrelfligth rushed over, shoving Autumnleaf aside.
"Squirrelflight..."Mudshadow managed to murmur, her dark green eyes already dimming, the scarlet brick-red blood slushing out like a rushing waterfall. "You are my best friend. Remember that..."
Mudshadow leaned towards Squirrelflight, and gave her friend one last lick before sighing and closing her eyes, one last shaky breath escaping her before she died.
"Mudshadow, no...no...don't leave!" Squirrelflight exclaimed, quivering.
Autumnleaf and Tealeaf stepped forard, eyes sympathetic.
"Squirrelflight, we have to take her back," Autumnleaf mewed, their earlier fight ignored.
Squirrelflight sat, her head bowed, and ignored the cat.
"Squirrelflight, as your former mentor, I am ordering you to get back to camp. We need to get Mudshadow back now!" Autumnleaf said.
Reluctantly, the ginger cat stood and stiffly stepped back.
Tealeaf and Autumnleaf gently took Mudshadow's dark body and carefully began to carry her back to the camp.
Squirrelflight stayed behind, letting the rising sun soak into her fur before slowly padding after her Clanmates.
