Prologue - Blood Season
~+~

Far to the north, in the frigid heart of a vast arctic mountain range, there was a large, snowy valley. It was more or less circular, about three miles in diameter, and nearly devoid of life, with forested mountains completely surrounding it. Their stony white faces glared down as a beast might when taking one last look at its prey.

A small village had been constructed around little grove of trees in the center of the otherwise barren, snowy depression. A single frost-laden road wound away from the wooden homes and buildings, out through rift in the crags and peaks. It was important that this road stayed well-salted and cleared, for the village made most of it's money from oil, logging, and hunting for pelts and meat - none of which would be very profitable if the road went out. It wasn't what left the town that made it as unique as it was, however - rather, it was what lived in and around it.

There were cats in the village. Strong, thick-furred, hardy, able to withstand extremely low temperatures. They made loyal pets in the desolate, icy wastes, and would greet their humans fondly after their long days of hunting or drilling for oil.

The cats were usually allowed outside, to stretch their legs and play in the grove, and do whatever cats do in the snow. There were times, however, where few would allow their cats to leave - it was the time of year known as "blood season". And that time was rapidly approaching as winter came to a close and spring drew nearer. Lance Harvard, the town's most respected and successful hunter, knew this. For most, blood season was a fearful time where they needed to keep their cats and children inside, or under close supervision, at all times. A time where fear of the mysteriously migratory wolf packs that roamed the mountains had a hold on their hearts. But not for Lance. To him, blood season meant just one thing - game.

At the moment, Lance was in the pub, chugging down whiskey, talking to the bartender about his plans. "Sons a' bitches won't know what hit 'em," he growled, thinking of the wolves.

The bartender was interested - not only did he run the pub, but he was also Lance's personal ammo supplier. "No they won't," he agreed. "Just got a crate of anti-personnel rounds, tear through them suckers like knife through bear-fat. Still got that custom piece?"

Lance chuckled. "Nice," he said. "And yeah, I do still got it. Sittin' on a rack over the cat's bed."

"Some wolves is gonna be eatin' some led, soon enough..." said the bartender.

"Damn right," said Lance.

Lance did not know that he was not the only one who would soon be facing the wolves of blood season. As his cat slept back at his cabin, in it's bed beside the fireplace, it dreamed evil dreams, prophetic dreams of war and death. Megadeath.
