Fear
Rain pounded on the forestfloor, echoing with the sound of thunder and crashing
of white streaks, pouring down on the ground without a care. The moon was
nowhere in sight, and the only thing that seemed to break the peace was the
rushing sound of water flowing down a riverbed, but even it made the slightest
whisper. The sound of pawsteps rapidly growing fell into the night, bathed by
the dim light of the white moon.
A dark gray tom sat eagerly at the nursery entrance, his fur smeared down by
the wet of the downpour. A white she-cat poked her head out, staring at the
tom for a moment more. But the silent wave of the she-cat's head meant nothing
to him. Inside the nursery, his mate was expecting. The medicine cat's sister had
just given birth, and the tom would have to stay up all night if his mate was to
give birth herself.
But, just as he thought, a loud screech entered the air, breaking the silence. The
dark gray tom's eyes flashed with fear as he quickly stepped into the nursery,
sprinting to a golden-brown she-cat's side.
"I'm here.." He murmured.
The she-cat's eyes were filled with love for one moment, but they clouded with pain
the next. Spasms rippled up the queen's side as she screeched in pain.
"You're doing fine, my love.." The tom cooed.
The medicine cat, Snowpool, bounded over to the terrorified queen's side, her eyes
filled with determination. Her apprentice, Jaypaw, followed.
"Gah!" The she-cat screamed, panting deeply.
Jaypaw sat at her side now, urging her mate to move over.
"Breathe deeply, Goldenfrost.." The light gray apprentice meowed. The she-cat
nodded, but her breathing was becoming shallow.
Snowpool let out a triumphent yowl, a ginger kit dangling from her jaws.
"Lick it.." She hissed to the she-cat's mate.
The dark gray warrior nodded, and began rasping his pink tongue over the ginger kit's
chest to stimulate its breathing. Blood dripped down Goldenfrost's mouth as her
breathing became rapidly fast. Heat rose from her body, and her heart seemed to race
as the dark gray tom pressed his paw against her chest. His mate was dying. But why?
Was StarClan angry at him for mating with a StreamClan she-cat?
No! She wasn't StreamClan anymore! She belonged to SnowClan!
Fear made his heart quicken as the she-cat's eyelids struggled to stay open
Even the medicine cat's tail twitched in horror as the she-cat's pulse increased.
Jaypaw, pressing his muzzle into the she-cat's belly fur, felt a contraction hit the
golden-brown queen's body.
Another kit was coming!
The queen twitched in pain, and dug her claws into Jaypaw's leg as she screamed in
horror. Jaypaw didn't really think the she-cat would live.. but new lives-- to be born
in a clan that needed them.. Another loud yowl escaped the queen's jaws as she closed
her eyes, which were now pouring tears. A scarlet liquid cruised down her gaped jaws,
and
Snowpool came out from behind Goldenfrost's mate with another kit in her mouth.
Gingerly, she sat the dark gray kit in front of Jaypaw, and flicked her tail at it, ordering
him to lick. He nodded, doing what the queen's mate had done to the ginger she-kit.
Yet another contraction stabbed at the queen's body, and this one seemed the most
painful. Goldenfrost howled in a terror unrealized by any other queen, panting, writhing,
and digging her unsheathed claws into the medicine cat apprentice's leg.
The
purple spots that were on the queen's belly hadn't gone away, and it didn't seem it was
the queen's youth that would let her die.
"You're doing fine!" Her mate yowled, his face clouded with fear.
The medicine cat and her apprentice hadn't given up.
The light gray tom bent down beside him, picking up some black-looking seeds, and forcing
the she-cat to eat them. Blood flowed down the nursery floor, an the she-cat's breathing
rapidly fell to but a heartbeat in a minute.
Then, it stopped all together.
The dark gray tom's eyes widened, along with the two other cats at his side. His mate was
dead.
And it was all because of the sickness that had almost killed her former clan.
Death seemed defeating, and it had-- indeed, defeated Hailmask.
Snowpool's eyes clouded with sorrow, yet a tint of shympathy lit the green sea.
"I'm sorry, Hailmask.. we tried.." She mewed.
"I kne- I knew I shouldn't have fallen in love with her.. but she was beautiful, Snowpool.. so
wonderful.." Hailmask muttered, tears dripping down his eyes.
"Hailmask.. just remember your kits.." The she-cat replied affectionately.
"Thank You, Snowpool.." The tom meowed, lifting himself to his paws and padding over to his
two kits.
They were both sleeping, curled up together. Both of them-- alive, and well.
"I'll bury her at dawnrise.." Hailmask decided. "Jaypaw.. could you help me in the morning?"
The light gray apprentice nodded.
"Thank You.. but-- what are we to do about Rainkit and Sandkit?" He asked.
Obviously, he'd already chosen names for them.. and his mate hadn't said a word about names, either.
"Perfect names.." Snowpool remarked with a smile, padding out of the den. One of the SnowClan queens overheard, shook herself, and padded over to the tom.
"I can handle two more kits, if you like.." The black she-cat offered.
"Really? Thank You, Ravenfur.." Hailmask growled, blinking gratefully.
The she-cat nodded, blinking back, and picked the two kits up by the scruff, softly carrying them to her own nest.
"Oh, StarClan.. if Goldenfrost is up there.. tell her I love her.." The white-masked warrior mewed, gazing up at the dreary, rainy skies outside.
