A sliver of a moon hung overhead, looking like a cat's claw slicing through the night. No clouds hung overhead and the sky remained clear. A large golden brown tom walked forward, his ears pricked for any sounds that would alert him to his whereabouts. His green eyes were narrowed, scanning the undergrowth for even the slightest sign of a cat nearby. Suddenly, a shadow loomed over him. Lionstar turned, coming face-to-face with a massive tabby tom. The tom's eyes were narrowed as well, and the two looked at each other for a moment. "Tigerstar," Lionstar suddenly murmured, dipping his head with the utmost respect. Tigerstar had been his former leader, as well as his father. But a StormClan patrol had taken his last life, and Lionstar- then Lionfur- had become leader. "Lionstar," Tigerstar mewed, but his voice held a hint of pride. Lionstar didn't see why Tigerstar was so proud of him, yet he didn't question it. "I couldn't have made a better choice when I chose you to be my deputy. LightningClan are flourishing this season," Tigerstar continued, flicking his tail. Lionstar nodded. "But that is mostly thanks to your amazing discovery of the Rabbit Grove on our territory. We've found more rabbits then we can eat." Lionstar mewed, flicking his tail in amusement. Tigerstar let out a rumble, but suddenly his green eyes became serious. "As you know, I have not come for small-talk," Tigerstar growled. "There is trouble in the forest, and StarClan send you a prophecy." Lionstar was surprised. "Trouble?" He mewed. "But... what type of trouble could we be in? StormClan have become lest hostile... for awhile at least. And we haven't seen any dogs around for nearly two moons." "This trouble is bigger then that," Tigerstar replied. "The fate of this entire forest rests in two cats' paws. Only they can bring peace to the forest again." "But who are they?" Lionstar asked, his pelt fluffing out. Tigerstar wasn't telling him anything! Tigerstar did not reply. Instead, he faded into darkness. Lionstar felt his paws slipping, and the ground was starting to vanish from underneath him. Just before he was plunged into darkness, he heard Tigerstar's final words. " One without the other is incomplete, the two will decide the fate of the clans." Lionstar awoke with a sudden jerk, his body matted in sweat. Immediately he got to his paws, running out of his cave-den. Should he tell the medicine cat about the prophecy? Just as he was about to head to Thymepelt's den, a tiny ball of fur bounded into him. "Hi daddy!" Honeykit squeaked. Lionstar let out a rumbling purr, gentlly setting his now two-moon old daughter off him. Not even a moment later, Goldenkit scurried over on wobbly legs. The two kits stared up at him with wide green eyes. "Can we be apprentices now?" Goldenkit asked in her usual innocent voice. Lionstar smiled, licking each of his daughters on the head. "You have a few more moons to go," he purred. "But don't worry, I'm sure that before you know it you'll both become apprentices." Goldenkit and Honeykit appeared disappointed, but the disappointment immediately vanished. "C'mon Goldenkit," Honeykit mewled. "Let's go play The Battle of StormClan with Birdkit and Jacklekit!" "Ok," Goldenkit mewed. In a flash the two kits scurried off, Goldenkit mewing a quick "Bye daddy!" before she vanished into the Nursery. Lionstar felt pride welling up in his chest, but suddenly it vanished, and the words of the prophecy echoed in his ears. " One without the other is incomplete, the two will decide the fate of the clans." It couldn't be my daughters... no. They would never cause any harm. Lionstar thought to himself. Suddenly he felt edgy. Maybe I won't tell Thymepelt yet. After all, nothing terrible has happened. I'm sure it was nothing. With that last thought, Lionstar returned to his den.

Chapter 1 Honeykit's pretty golden dappled pelt shone like a ray from the sun. Her green eyes shone with excitement, watching with wide eyes as her father, Lionstar, called a clan meeting. "The cats going to the Gathering tonight are Fernpelt, Navyfur, Tattlepaw, Foxtail, Coyotefur, Rivernose and Wavepaw. Accompanying them will be me, Raincloud and Thymepelt. We are leaving in a few moments." Honeykit felt a slight stab of envy as she watched the cats gather. Her old friend, Tattlepaw, stood beside his mentor, jumping up and down eagerly. His tail was lashing in excitement, only bubbling up more envy inside of Honeykit. She was only three moons old- it would be at least three more moons for her to even become an apprentice. "Jealous, are we?" Honeykit turned, coming face-to-face with the one cat she hated most. Jackelkit. The two had actually been friends when they were younger, but as Jackelkit's ego (and Honeykit's ego, though she'd never admit it) grew, the two became rivals. "I didn't hear him call your name," Honeykit retorted. "Oh, but he will by the next moon. I'll have been an apprentice for nearly a moon. After all, you do know that mine and Birdkit's ceremonies are tomorrow." Jackelkit replied coolly, appearing unfazed by Honeykit's fiery glare. "And I guess Goldenkit won't get to be the medicine cat either, will she? Since we both know that Birdkit also wants the role, and since she's older, it's all hers. We even already talked to Thymepelt about it." Jackelkit continued. Goldenkit let out a hiss. "That spoiled little Birdkit always gets what she wants anyways," Honeykit hissed. Jackelkit shrugged. "And you don't? You're the leader's daughter, and Creamfur, a well respected warrior, is your mother." Jackelkit growled. "You've got a perfect life," Honeykit growled, but had no comment. What Jackelkit said was true. Honeykit and Goldenkit did have it pretty good. Not many cats trusted Caramel, Jackelkit and Birdkit's mother. Not many cats even trusted Jackelkit and Birdkit. Jackelkit had regained his cool appearance, and his pelt had flattened. "Have fun in the Nursery, alone." he growled, stalking off. Honeykit spat at the ground where Jackelkit had just stood. Her anger had risen, and she already felt like tearing his head off. Honeykit's eyes traveled toward the camp entrance, where she saw the Gathering cats about to leave. If I go to a Gathering before him, he'll learn to keep his mouth shut, Honeykit thought to herself. And there's only one way to do it. Honeykit looked back toward the corner of the Nursery. Caramel lay with Birdkit at her side, while Jackelkit lay a little ways away. Honeykit's mother, Creamfur, was busy fussing over Goldenkit. Now was her only chance. Quick as a flash, Honeykit tore out of the den. Immediately she was bombarded with all sorts of scents, most of them the same but all of them having one distinct difference. Since it was so late, not many cats were out and about. She could hear heavy breathing coming from the elders den, relaxed snores from the Warriors den and a few grunts from the apprentice den. The clearing was practically empty. Nows my chance.Crouching low, Honeykit headed toward the edges of the camp. She tried to stay in the shadows, for if the moon hit her golden pelt just right it lit up like the sun itself. And because a golden pelt against a gray cave was pretty noticeable. The camp entrance was just ahead, she was so close she could almost taste the forest air. So close... just a few more steps... "What are you doing, Goldenkit?" Honeykit let out a startled cry, toppling over her paws to the ground. She returned to her paws, letting out an irritated hiss. Again, some cat had mistaken her for her twin sister. She turned, staring with angry green eyes at the apprentice, Featherpaw. "Oh, Honeykit, I'm sorry. I thought you were Goldenkit. By the way, is she around?" Featherpaw mewed. Honeykit decided to take this as an opportunity to escape Featherpaw's questioning. "Um, yeah, I think she's in the Nursery. Probably asleep because it's so late." Honeykit replied in an even voice. Featherpaw nodded. "Ok, thanks. I just needed to ask her about a scratch I got earlier from training. Thymepelt put Marigold on it, but it still looks sort of infected. I'd ask Thymepelt, but she's at the Gathering," Honeykit nodded quickly, not in the mood for small-talk. StarClan, by the time she got to the Gathering it'd be over! "Well, Goldenkit's in the Nursery so you can go ask her," Honeykit mewed, impatience starting to show in her voice. "See you later then." Featherpaw nodded, starting to walk toward the Nursery. Honeykit let out a breath of relief. Sometimes Featherpaw was just a little clueless about Honeykit's actions. She thought that both Honeykit and Goldenkit were alike in both looks and actions. But she was wrong. The two were different kits, with different personalities. Now that she had a chance to escape, Honeykit bolted out of camp before anyone would notice her again. As soon as she was far enough away, she took a moment to admire the scenery around her. Trees stood above her, taller then the cave walls in the camp. Dozens of plants that she couldn't identify littered the ground, and beautiful flowers shone in the moonlight. Even Honeykit's golden pelt started to glow silver. She felt like a StarClan cat. And to think, I have to wait three more moons before I can go out into the forest on my own... she thought to herself. Honeykit sighed, when she suddenly remembered she was supposed to be following the Gathering cats. She scented the air, trying to pick up a fresh scent of her clan. But she scented nothing. Not even a stale scent. Disappointed, the young she-cat trailed onward, hoping to catch at least a whiff of the clan.

Chapter 2 "It doesn't look any worse then when I last saw it, Featherpaw." Birdkit mewed in her usual soft voice. Goldenkit sat a little ways away, watching the future medicine cat apprentice look at Featherpaw's scratch. Goldenkit wanted to interupt, saying that Featherpaw's scratch was still infected, and hadn't completely healed, but was too nervous to disturb Birdkit. Originally, Featherpaw had come to ask Goldenkit to look at her scratch. But Jackelkit cut in, saying that the real future medicine cat should look at it. Reluctantly, Featherpaw had allowed Birdkit to look at the scratch instead. "Are you sure?" Featherpaw asked. "Because it still stings." the she-cat didn't seem to have much confidence in Birdkit. "T-That's just a side-effect to the Marigold," Birdkit stammered nervously. Goldenkit winced at Birdkit's suddenly nervous tone. The pale tabby didn't seem to have any confidence in herself at all. "But-" "She said it's just a side-effect, so it's a side-effect! StarClan, I'd think you'd be able to handle a little sting!" Jackelkit hissed from behind his sister. Goldenkit knew that the tabby kit was very protective of his sister, and obviously Featherpaw knew that now too. "Alright, if you say so-" "The wound is still infected," Goldenkit cut in suddenly. All three cats suddenly looked at her. "What?" Jackelkit growled, his eyes narrowing as if to warn her to keep her mouth shut. Gulping, Goldenkit continued. "The wound, it's still infected. You need to apply more Marigold. Apparently you took the cobwebs off to early, and the wound must've re-opened." Goldenkit mewled nervously. "At least, I think that's what it is." Birdkit looked at her paws, as if Goldenkit had just scolded her. Goldenkit felt bad about correcting her, and her gaze moved to her paws as well. "Thanks, Goldenkit," Featherpaw purred. "Would you mind going to get me some Marigold from the medicine den?" Goldenkit opened her mouth to speak, but an angry Jackelkit cut her off. "Shouldn't you have the Medicine Cat apprentice get you the herb? I doubt that Goldenkit has any idea what Marigold looks like," Jackelkit growled. Goldenkit did know what Marigold looked like, in fact she knew the scent and appearance of a few herbs. But she feared upsetting the kit even more, so she simply nodded. "H-He's right, I don't know what it looks like. Birdkit should go get it," Goldenkit murmured softly, her gaze moving to her paws again. Nervously, Birdkit stepped out of the den, Featherpaw behind her. Goldenkit felt Jackelkit's steely gaze burning into her pelt, before he too left the den. "Why do I let him push me around?" she asked herself, laying down where she sat. Goldenkit heard her mother and Caramel gossiping near the corner of the den, obviously not paying attention to the earlier argument. Crestfallen, Goldenkit laid her head on her paws. "I'm such a screw-up," Goldenkit looked up, seeing Birdkit suddenly standing above her. Confused, Goldenkit sat up. "You were right about the infection. It was so simple, and I couldn't see it," Birdkit sighed. "Maybe I'm just not cut out to be a Medicine Cat." "That's not true," Goldenkit protested. "You just haven't begun your training, that's all." "Neither have you." Birdkit pointed out in a suddenly dull voice. "And yet you knew what was wrong with Featherpaw. If I would've just let her go, what would've happened? Would the infection have gotten worse?" Goldenkit shook her head. "Thymepelt would've been back in time. It was an easy mistake, and even if I hadn't interupted, Featherpaw probably would've been ok." "But what about next time?" Birdkit asked, her voice rising with a sudden anger. "What happens when I dismiss a cat who needs help next time? Or give them catmint instead of juniper? What happens then?" Birdkit sighed again. Goldenkit had no response to what Birdkit had pointed out, and both kits sat in silence. "You want this more then me, and you're better at it then me," Birdkit mewed. "Maybe I should just train as a Warrior, and let you become the Medicine Cat apprentice." "No." Goldenkit protested suddenly. "Birdkit, it takes time to get good at all the herbs and memorizing them. I don't know that much about it either. Trust me, once you start training you'll know ten times more then me." she smiled. "Besides, now I can train with Honeykit." Birdkit smiled, though she still looked unsure. Suddenly, Birdkit's ears pricked. "Say... where is Honeykit anyways?" she asked. Goldenkit sat up straight, feeling worry clench her gut. Yet she didn't know why she was worried. Honeykit left the Nursery all the time, and she usually spent time exploring the camp. Goldenkit hadn't worried this much about her since... the first time Honeykit disappeared. But Goldenkit suddenly felt something else. Fear. She felt lost, she felt afraid. Like something so beautiful became something deadly and vicious. "I-I don't know," Goldenkit mewed, her eyes growing wide. "Honeykit's gone?" Goldenkit watched as her mother, Creamfur, rushed toward them. Her eyes were wide and frantic as well. "Maybe she's just in the camp somewhere." Caramel mewed. Before Goldenkit heard her mother's reply, her surroundings suddenly changed. She was running, running through the forest. Dark shadows loomed over her head, and tree branches hung so low they managed to scrape at her back. She was panting, and she was out of breath. The tops of the trees blocked the view of the stars and the moon.
Suddenly she let out a small whimper. "I wanna go home.""Goldenkit? Goldenkit what's wrong?" Goldenkit shook her head rapidly, and her original surroundings returned to view. Birdkit, Caramel and Creamfur were staring at her. "Y-You just zoned out," Birdkit mewed. "Are you ok?" Goldenkit ignored her. Trembling, she let out a soft mewl. "I think I know where Honeykit is."

Chapter 3 I'm lost...Those thoughts rang through Honeykit's head as the tired kit made her way through the suddenly dark, dead forest. Her pelt was ruffled, and her tail was dragged dully across the ground. Her eyes held but one emotion. Fear. Fear tore through the tiny kit's body. Honeykit was shaking with each step she took. Suddenly she let out a soft whimper. "I wanna go home," The little golden she-kit had no clue where she was. The trees and plants were no longer beautiful. They were dead, and the ground was much more moist. Most of the plants were barely clinging to life. And the scents... LightningClan scent grew even more stale as she walked. "Where is she, Goldenkit?"Honeykit jumped, looking around eagerly for the voice she recognized as her mother. But the cream she-cat was nowhere to be seen. Somehow, she was hearing her voice. "I... don't know exactly. The area is a lot different then the regular forest. The trees are dead, and the ground is moist-"
"MarshClan territory!"The conversation between Goldenkit and Creamfur continued in Honeykit's mind. She was confused. Was she simply hearing voices out of her loneliness and fear? Was she merely imagining that her mother and sister were there? Maybe if I listen, I can hear more. Honeykit thought to herself, straining to hear the familliar voices. She stood there, waiting. But she heard no sound. The voices had vanished. With a sigh, Honeykit sat down, wrapping her tail over her paws. The marshy scent made her wrinkle her nose. Honeykit wished to be back in the regular, warm forest. She wanted the moonlight to turn her surroundings silver, she wanted a canopy of trees above her head... but that wasn't happening. Honeykit's green eyes were wide with fright as an owl hooted nearby. Her pelt stuck up on-end, and Honeykit found herself wishing more and more that she hadn't tried to sneak away. "I'm getting nervous about StormClan pushing the borders again, Shadowstar." Honeykit's ears pricked. Were these more voices? She didn't recognize them at all, but that marshy scent was getting closer. Honeykit could hear pawsteps heading in her direction. Letting out a soft squeak of fear, Honeykit ducked behind a dead fern. "I understand, Lilypetal. But for now we have not much to worry about. It's obvious that Waterstar still isn't happy with Lionstar. If anything, an attack will be made on LightningClan first." Timidly, Honeykit peered from behind the frond. A group of cats, larger then a patrol, were standing right by her. Honeykit knew that they were the cats chosen to go to the Gathering. But for which clan, she did not know. Remembering the voice in her head earlier, saying she was in MarshClan territory, made Honeykit decide that these were MarshClan cats. "Don't be so sure," The first cat- Lilypetal- warned. "StormClan have always been power-hungry. And besides, if they do attack LightningClan first, we'll likely be next. What happens then?" "We'll cross that border when we get to it," Shadowstar snapped. Honeykit felt a slight twinge of anger. StormClan were planning to attack LightningClan! At least, according to some MarshClan cats they were. The voices hushed, making Honeykit become uneasy. All the cats stopped moving, murmuring words she couldn't hear. But she did manage to pick out one cat's sentence. "Does anyone else smell LightningClan?" Honeykit tensed, ducking down behind the fern. The tiny kit felt her paws shaking, knowing exactly what would happen if she were caught. MarshClan would take her prisoner- or kill her. "It seems we have a spy in our midst," Shadowstar growled. Shadowstar's eyes locked on the fern that Honeykit hid behind. Honeykit tensed, preparing to bolt if needed. The leader's gaze seemed to go right through her- and Honeykit was unsure if that was a good or bad thing. Honeykit was careful not to move. "The scent seems stale," A younger voice- probably apprentice- mewed. Honeykit heard another cat utter a low growl of warning. The apprentice said nothing more. Thank StarClan I'm downwind, Honeykit thought. Or else I'd be a goner. She watched as Shadowstar turned, and led the group of cats passed where Honeykit was. Once they were gone, Honeykit stepped out from behind the fern. She was shaken, but managed to regain her composure. "What are you doing out here, little kit?" Honeykit's shoulders tensed. She turned, expecting to see an angry warrior or furious leader. Instead, she saw a young apprentice. He had a long white pelt and soft blue eyes. "Um..." Honeykit didn't know what to say. Slightly offended by the term "Little kit" she snarled. "Who you callin' little anyways?" The apprentice didn't appear offended. In fact, Honeykit couldn't read his eyes at all. It was almost as if they were dead... emotionless. "Shouldn't you be on your own territory?" The apprentice asked. "I am- well was." Honeykit retorted. "And aren't you a little young to be out of camp?" "I'm three moons old, I can do what I want," The apprentice had an amused expression on his face. With a sly smirk, he mewed, "Just like I can do what I want. I wanted to keep quiet, since you were just an innocent kit and not tell Shadowstar you were here. But, now I might want to tell her we have a miniature LightningClan spy on our territory." Honeykit growled, but didn't reply. The tom had a point. She should be grateful that he wasn't turning her in. "Whatever," Honeykit mewed. "I'm gonna go back to my territory. And I don't need your help to find my way," The apprentice shrugged. "If you say so. But just for future reference, I'm Cloudedpaw," "Honeykit," Honeykit replied. Waving her tail, Honeykit turned and stalked off in the opposite direction of Cloudedpaw. That had to be the right way, right? Suddenly she felt alone again, and actually wished for the company of the slightly annoying apprentice. With a soft sigh Honeykit trudged on, heading in the direction she thought was home.

Chapter 4 [/b] Goldenkit's eyes shone with worry as her mother and the warrior Pebblestream exited the camp, heading toward MarshClan territory. According to Goldenkit's description of the area, that was where Honeykit was. But why would she be in MarshClan territory? was Goldenkit's only thought. Honeykit hadn't even left the camp before, for StarClan's sake! "What trouble has Honeykit gotten herself into now?" Jacklekit growled, coming toward Goldenkit. Goldenkit turned away from him, not in the mood to be annoyed. But Jacklekit was persistent, and as Goldenkit tried to walk away he stepped in front of her. "Well?" he prodded. Goldenkit shrugged. "I heard she wandered onto another clan's territory," Jacklekit purred smugly. And where did you hear that, the other side of the Nursery? Goldenkit thought angrilly, though she kept quiet. "Will you please go away?" Goldenkit mewed through clenched teeth, trying to keep her voice sweet. Jackelkit opened his mouth to reply, but was interupted as they both heard cats entering the camp. The Gathering patrol. With a smirk, Jackelkit growled. "Just wait till Lionstar hears about this," Before Goldenkit could do anything, Jackelkit sped out of the Nursery. Goldenkit gulped. Lionstar would hear about his daughter's disappearance eventually, but hearing about it from Jackelkit surely meant that he wouldn't get the true story. Quickly she sped out of the Nursery behind him. As soon as she exited the Nursery, she saw the big brown tabby talking to Lionstar. "Dad!" Goldenkit mewed, racing toward them. Lionstar looked up from Jackelkit, his eyes locking with his daughter. Goldenkit couldn't read his expression, but she could tell he was angry- and worried. "What's this about Honeykit running away?" He demanded as soon as Goldenkit reached them. "She didn't run away!" Goldenkit hissed, glaring at a smug Jackelkit. "She... just went off exploring." Truthfully Goldenkit had no idea why Honeykit had left. She hoped she wasn't running away. Surely Jackelkit hadn't pushed her over the edge, had he? "Jackelkit also tells me that you knew where she was?" Lionstar mewed, his voice more questioning. Goldenkit shrugged. She had no clue how to exactly explain this to her father, but there had to be someway. "Well... sorta. I had a vision of MarshClan territory, and I just had a feeling that Honeykit was there," Goldenkit mewed, shuffling her paws. "Is that bad?" Lionstar's expression changed breifly to worry, but it vanished before Goldenkit was able to figure out the reason for the worry. Clearing his throat, Lionstar stared at Goldenkit. "I-It's not bad," He replied, his voice slightly wavering. "I'm going to send a patrol to find her." "Mom and Pebblestream already went to look," Goldenkit mewed. This time worry flashed through Lionstar's eyes, and Goldenkit immediately knew why. Lionstar had always been overprotective of Creamfur. Knowing she had left the camp probably made him nervous. Muttering something under his breath, Lionstar meowed. "Ok. I'll be in my den if anyone needs me. Also, Goldenkit, Thymepelt wishes to see you," Without waiting for a reply, Lionstar went into his den. Goldenkit saw that Jackelkit had left earlier in the conversation. Looking around, she saw that Thymepelt was in her den. Confused and curious as to why the medicine cat wished to speak with her, Goldenkit padded into the den. The pale tabby was busy sorting through herbs, muttering their names as she did. Goldenkit cleared her throat to let Thymepelt know she was there, and as she did the medicine cat turned to look at her. "Oh, hello Goldenkit," Thymepelt purred. "I see your father delivered my message." Goldenkit nodded, unsure of what to say. Was she in trouble? What was it that Thymepelt wanted? Sensing the kit's confusion, Thymepelt smiled. "You're not in trouble," she mewed. "I wanted to speak with you about... well your future." "My future?" Goldenkit echoed, her voice still holding confusion. "Yes," Thymepelt mewed. Her eyes becoming serious, she continued. "Featherpaw told me about what you did earlier today. I was amazed at how you knew what was wrong- especially at your age. And while you and your father were talking, I overheard that you had a vision and well..." Sighing, Thymepelt continued. "This is a big decision, but I need to know. Would you like to be the medicine cat apprentice?" Goldenkit's mouth was agape, and she was at a loss for words. Thymepelt wanted... her to be her apprentice? Goldenkit of course wanted to yowl that she wanted to, but then she remembered Birdkit. "W-What about Birdkit?" she stammered. "I mean, y-you s-said that she was to be your apprentice," Thymepelt sighed, shaking her head. "Birdkit is a nice cat, but I can sense that her destiny lies elsewhere, somewhere beyond the medicine cat's den. She wants this for different reasons, reasons I don't understand. But you," she smiled. "You have a gift, Goldenkit." Goldenkit wanted more then anything to become Thymepelt's apprentice. But she had become good friends with Birdkit, and didn't want to hurt her. Though it killed Goldenkit, she shook her head. "I-I'm sorry," She mewed softly. "I do not wish to be your apprentice. Birdkit... she's the perfect cat for the job." Goldenkit looked up, her eyes pained. "Thank you for the offer." Without waiting for a reply, Goldenkit turned and left the den, her tail dragging in the dust. She really wished her sister was back home now. She needed someone to talk to. I just gave up my dream... and it doesn't feel right at all.
