Chapter 1:
Sandpelt emerged from the Thornclan warriors’ den. Leaving the warmth of the many still sleeping cat bodies and striding out to meet the newleaf day. Dew from the nearby bluebells began to glisten her coat as she licked from them.
With a sleepy walk, Sandpelt went over to the center of the camp clearing where the fresh-kill pile lay. Seeing that it was low Sandpelt chose not to eat and to instead wait for the earliest patrol to begin.
Sandpelt noticed that Shadoweyes had been camp guard for the night and so having nothing better to do went over to relive the beautiful she-cat, “Good Sunrise Shadoweyes.”
The black cat turned and meowed her greeting, “Hello Sandpelt. Are you the first cat up?”
“Besides yourself, yes. I thought that you might like to come off duty a little early.”
“Thanks.” purred Shadoweyes touching her tail to Sandpelt’s back as she went to the warrior’s den.
There she was greeted by a tall black and white cat who greeted her, “Good Sunrise Shadoweyes.”
The she-cat dipped her head respectfully, “You too, Waterrush.”
As the black cat disappeared into the shadows of the den Waterrush turned to Sandpelt, “It was nice of you to take her place. As soon as night patrol comes back you’ll be off duty.”
“Thank you deputy.” Sandpelt meowed. Little did she know that a different black and white cat, Waterrush’s son, crept up to her right side. Before she realized it, Sandpelt was on her back, “Hey get off Treepatch.”
Treepatch purred, “Never knew I was coming did you?”
Sandpelt hissed playfully, “Go eat a mouse tail.”
This brought more play fighting until the approach of cats through the ferns and bracken surrounding the camp stopped the two warriors. Through the tunnel that led to the camp popped Whiptail, Marshflight and the apprentice Skypaw.
“How was patrol Skypaw?” Treepatch asked as they went by.
The light tan tabby tom yawned and meowed back, “Tiring. Hi, Sandpelt.”
“Good Sunrise.” Sandpelt meowed back thinking of how Skypaw was now old enough to be a warrior and probably soon would be. Sandpelt jumped up and trotted behind the patrol into the middle of the clearing.
There, Waterrush sat issuing orders for the clan, “Whiptail, go ahead and let your patrol rest. Spiderclaw, you Treepatch and Sandpelt can take hunting patrol. Powerstar is still resting from her trip to Watercave, but since Greyknees gave her some more traveling herbs she should be battle fit by noon.”
Everyone purred but of the warriors Treepatch purred the loudest. Before Powerstar had become leader she had had a litter of kits, with Waterrush as father, Treepatch was the only one who survived that cruel leaf-bare six seasons ago. Sandpelt waved her tail to Spiderclaw and her friend and then cantered out of camp.
