Lionfur gazed down upon his mate and two kits with pride. One was a handsome ginger tom, the other a pretty tabby she-cat. Honeyclaw looked up at him, her eyes brimming with love and happiness.
“ They’re beautiful.” She whispered, licking each kit on its head.
Lionfur nodded and sat down next to her, lost in a whirl of joy. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the peace in the nursery, which was empty except for Ferncloud, sleeping soundly on the other side. Lionfur stood up.
“ Where are you going?” Honeyclaw murmured.
“ The gathering. I can hear Firestar leaving.”
“ But-” Lionfur cut her off with a affectionate nuzzle.
“ Don’t worry. I’ll tell you about it as soon as I get back.” He mewed, exiting the nursery.
Lionfur raced over to the group of Thunderclan cats who were already leaving. Hollyshade nudged him.
“ You never were on time, Lionfur.” She teased.
“ Well, I was busy tending to my mate and kits!” He answered, nudging her back.
She laughed and dashed after the rest of the group, Lionfur following.
The Thunderclan cats padded along the side of the lake, nearing the island. Lionfur padded over the marshy grass, trying not to let his paws sink in. They arrived at the fallen tree began to travel across it, Hollyshade first. She almost lost her footing on the slippery wood, but didn’t fall off. Lionfur climbed up after her, treading carefully over the wet bark.
Windclan and Riverclan were already there, Lionfur thought to himself. Hollyshade had joined Willowfoot, the new medicine cat after Mothwing’s death. A cat was approaching Lionfur from behind, and turning, he realized who it was.
“ Hello Lionfur.” The ginger she-cat greeted him, a slight edge of mixed emotions to her voice.
“ Hi Heathereyes. How are you? I haven’t seen you for ages.” Lionfur replied cheerfully.
“ Fine thank you. Do you want to go for a walk? I can barely hear you over everyone else.” She mewed.
Lionfur accepted, even though he knew Heathereyes could hear him perfectly fine. He followed her onto the edge of the island, the water lapping calmly at the earthy grass. She sat down and looked him with her huge violet eyes.
“ Lionfur…” She began.
Lionfur knew what she was going to say, though he didn’t want her to say it.
“ I…I…” She faltered.
“ Just tell me what you’re going to say.” Lionfur sighed.
“ I love you.” She mumbled.
Lionfur felt his heart pound, with anger or happiness, he didn’t know. He decided that it was anger.
“ I can’t love you Heathereyes.” He started, trying to control himself.
“ I know that we’re in different clans, but it could still work-”
“ No it couldn’t! When we were young apprentice’s it was fine, but those times are gone! Your lost memories!”
“ But it could still work-”
“ It’s not that!”
“ Then what is it?” Heathereyes cried.
“ I have a mate already! And two kits!” Lionfur yowled.
Silence swept between the arguing cats.
Heathereyes blinked slowly, as if she didn’t, no, wouldn’t, believe that Lionfur didn’t love her.
Lionfur on the other hand, turned and bounded back to the gathering, not glancing back once, rage boiling in his blood.
Heathereyes shook on her paws. Did that really happen? She asked herself. She knew the answer already. Heathereyes shivered as a cold wind ruffled her ginger fur. She swallowed, dashed away, just as it began to rain.
The rain was pouring down, pelting Heathereyes’s fur to her body. She stopped under a tree, gasping for breath, the blood roaring in her ears. A voice suddenly called her name.
“ Lionfur?” She whispered, a faint sparkly of hope washing through her.
A cat was walking towards her, though it was not Lionfur, but his brother.
“ J-jayfeather?” She meowed, her voice breaking.
“ Heathereyes? What are you doing out in this storm?”
“ I might be asking you the same thing.” Heathereyes’s voice cracked and she rushed to Jayfeather, burying her face in his soaked pelt.
“ Its okay.” Jayfeather comforted her like a kit.
“ Lionfur hates me…” Heathereyes sniffed.
“ But I don’t. I love you.”
Heathereyes closed her eyes.
“ I love you too.”
