Chapter 1
The setting sun painted the sky into a red splash. Humans passed left and right, chattering happily as the day drew to an end. A neon yellow shop, Mango as it was called, began to close and its workers started to leave. A black shape in the dark took this as his chance.
Peering out, his bright amber eyes glowed around the street, narrowing to slits. It was still to early, he though to himself.
“ Now or never…” He muttered, stepping out.
The black cat glanced to the right and darted off, dodging in between multi-coloured paws, stamping dangerously close to him. He stopped and slipped into an alleyway, covered with stretching shadows. The tomcat stalked further down until he came to doorway, lights and noise streaming out of it. Taking a deep breath, he slid inside.
Footsteps immediately clambered towards him. The cat instinctively rolled over and under a cabinet, he was used to doing it. He pricked his ears until they had gone, then slipped out and dashed over to a counter and scanned it with his eyes quickly: A bit of cheese, some vegetables, bread and meat of some sort. That would have to do.
The tomcat snatched some of the meat away from the counter and pulled off some of the bread. He snapped his jaws around them and whirled around, ready to run. Unfortunately, a human noticed him and began to shout for others. The cat knew he hadn’t much time left. He rushed out the doorway and back into the alley. Gasping with relief, he began to make the long journey home.
----------
Heaving his heavy paws, the black cat disappeared behind the neon yellow shop, which wasn’t yellow now, but a dull grey colour, mingling with the darkness around it. He stepped lightly, it was dangerous to be alone at this time of night. Pushing his nose between two dustbins, a faint mewling could be heard.
“ Rush? Twiggy? Ripple? Are you okay?” He questioned.
“Mango, hurry, come in.” Mango, the black cat, sighed and slid into the small gap.
Rush’s emerald green eyes lit up as soon as she saw her mate arrive. Twiggy and Ripple leapt about, happy to see their father.
“Father! Did you find any food?” Ripple squeaked, her green eyes flashing.
“Quiet Ripple! You know we have to be unnoticed, but I do have some food.” He replied, setting down the bread and meat.
Whilst Rush split the food up for her kits, Mango covered the entrance with some human litter, drowning the small den into blackness. He sat down next to his pale ginger mate and gulped down what little food he had, yellow eyes full of sadness.
“Okay kits! Time to go to sleep!” Rush ordered, rounding her kits over into a corner.
“Aw, but we wanna stay up!” Twiggy protested, her amber eyes huge.
“Well you can’t. Come on, lay down,” Rush mewed, nosing her daughters into their make-shift bed.
Protesting, Twiggy and Ripple finally dozed off into their dreams. Rush sighed and curled up, wrapping her ginger tail around her, tucking under her nose. Mango licked her ear and quietly slipped back out of the den.
----------
We need more food, he thought desperately. Mango had wandered around in a oval shape, ending up on the edge of a pitch-black alleyway. This wasn’t his territory, and he would be a fool to trespass. Mango’s stomach groaned and he swallowed his fear and walked into the black, engulfing him completely.
Mango knew that if he so much stepped on a piece of human litter, he would die, no questions asked. The black tom held his breath as he slid across the wall, trying not to make any noise. He had been down here once, and vowed never to again. These cats were killers. They wouldn’t let him live for one heartbeat if he was caught.
Mango was close now, the stench of human food was sickening, but he could detect fresh prey, squashed under the rubbish. Silently, Mango slipped a sleek black paw into a large pile of filth, making no sound. He touched something soft and drew his claws around it, delicately pulling it out. Just as it was out of the pile, a loosely stacked piece of hard plastic took its chance to fall and clatter loudly across the ground.
Foxdung, now I’m dead, Mango cursed. He glanced around wildly, praying that the vicious cats who inhabited these alleys were not here tonight. The air was thick and silent. Nothing moved. Mango was just about to relax and pick up his food and leave when something heavy landed on him, crushing him into the dirty stones.
“Good evening there.” the tom growled, a hint of mockery tainting his words.
Mango dared not struggle, if so the cat would use is oversized jaws to pierce his throat and that would be it. The end. Luckily, this cat was new. Mango could tell by his movements. Instead of scratching or biting, he just held him down whist waiting for the others. Then it would be the end. Perhaps, Mango thought, if I bribe him to let me go, he might because he’s new. Thinking that was a good idea, Mango swiveled his head around.
“Hey, cat.” He mewed casually, trying hard not to betray the terror building up inside of him.
“Don’t talk to me like that! I’m a private warrior, Dune’s the name, so don’t you dare think of speaking again!” He spat, though Mango could tell that there was far too much pride and boast in his voice.
“ Fine then, hey Dune, don’t you know the regulations around here?”
Dune’s grip loosened by a fraction.
“What regulations?”
“You know, your Cats rules? My, I would think that a private warrior like you should know what you do when you catch a stray cat on you territory.”
“Of course I do! And how do I know that you’re a stray? You might be a spy from The Square Cats or Rattle’s Cats.” Dune shivered slightly as he mentioned the rival cats.
Mango however, gave out a mrrow of laughter.
“I would have thought that a private warrior could recognize a Square Cat or a Rattle. They have distinctive scent, surely you should know that?”
Dune growled but Mango continued.
“So if you catch a cat who isn’t a Square Cat or a Rattle you should let them go! Huh, some private warrior you are.” Mango scoffed.
Dune pondered for a moment, then leaped off Mango, who silently screamed his happiness.
“Next time…I won’t be so kind. Now, get off our territory!” He yowled, sending Mango fleeing.
Smiling to himself, the black cat stopped next to a tall building, panting. His green eyes glittered with victory. Silly tom, should have know than any trespassers were killed instantly, he would pay dearly for his mistake, Mango thought to himself, swinging around the bright yellow building in which his family lived behind.
PWEESE tell me if its stupid and will never get any good comments in a million years, I need to know!
