Watch Your Step
Sorreltail stood at the edge of a cliff, a yawning canyon in the mountain side, plunging down into the abyss. Darkness filled it; there was no way of knowing when it stopped. She peeked over, the edge, staring down into the infinite blackness. It was unnerving, almost unnatural.
Shaking her dappled head, the tortoiseshell she-cat backed up and turned around, hurrying to catch up with the rest of the Clans making their journey to their new home. Then a bush caught her eye, its dark green leaves and bright red berries flashing in the sunlight. Terror gripped the young warrior, she knew what these where, deathberries!
Sorreltail felt panic rising inside her. She had no reason to fear them, she hadn’t eaten them, and wouldn’t. Still the sight of what had come closer to killing her than any enemy warrior sent chills down her spine.
She skirted the bush, keeping her amber eyes on it at all times. Suddenly, the rock slipped from under her paws, and Sorreltail scrabbled at the air. She dug her claws into the ground as she felt herself sliding over the edge of the cliff. Horror filled her mind, obscuring all else. It wasn’t time for her to join StarClan, it couldn’t be!
Amber eyes snapped open in fear, sweat tricked through Sorreltail’s fur, she was safe, her pelt pressed against her brother Rainwhisker’s dark grey fur. She shut her eyes again, letting the terror of her dream subside. It wasn’t real, it never happened.
With a deep breath, the ThunderClan she-cat opened her eyes once more, and pushed to her paws. Sorreltail smiled as she saw the bodies of cats snuggled together. There were cats from every Clan, brought together by the same hardship, a destroyed home.
She looked for the familiar pelts of her Clan mates, lingering on them one by one. She counted them, someone was missing! She looked carefully, giving names to each of the pelts of the ThunderClan cats. Her gaze moved to the golden brown pelt of Thornclaw. She looked more carefully, Thornclaw was the only golden ThunderClan cat there, Brackenfur was missing!
Hurriedly, Sorreltail got to her paws. What if an eagle had gotten him in the night? She couldn’t stand to know her friend had been killed! She dashed through the cats, searching for Brackenfur’s sent. There it was, musky and warm, like the summer forest. She followed it, skirting the group, and turning around the side of a ledge.
To one side ran a high cliff, its rocky side looking like it would tumble down at any moment. To the other, about a fox-length away from the ledge, was the dark canyon from her dream, its endless pit dropping off into depths unknown.
Sorreltail stared in front of her, not daring to look at it. She spotted Brackenfur sitting on a rock, staring out over the mountains. Relief soothed her, and she picked her pace up to a run. “Brack-“she started to call. Then she realized with horror, she was slipping, just like in her dream.
She screamed, her voice echoing through the mountains. Sorreltail franticly tried to catch herself, but she felt wind rushing past her fur as she plunged down. Then, sturdy and strong, she felt a solid grip on her scruff, pulling her out of the canyons jaws, and lifting her to safety.
“Are you all right?” Sorreltail looked up into concerned green eyes. Her heart was pounding and her legs trembled, that had been a close one.
“I’m fine thanks to you,” Sorreltail mewed gratefully.
Brackenfur smiled, “good, watch your step next time.” Sorreltail couldn’t help giving a small laugh, Brackenfur’s smile echoed it. “Why did you come out here anyway?” he asked, helping Sorreltail to her paws.
“I saw you where missing, and wondered where you went,” Sorreltail answered, a strange feeling of self-cautiousness prickling her fur.
Brackenfur shrugged, jumping back onto his rock, “I just came out here to think, I miss our old home.”
Sorreltail jumped up onto the rock beside him, taking extra care to make sure she didn’t lose her footing. ”I miss it to,” she meowed.
The golden tabby tom looked over at her and shot her a grin. ”Wherever we settle, I’m sure you will make it a dangerous place to be around, who knows, we might have you tripping on mice!”
Sorreltail gave him a playful shove, but then looked at her paws, “at least I’ll have you to catch me.”
Brackenfur looked over at her, and ran his tail along her dappled back, “I’ll always be there.”
Sorreltail smiled and lent her head against the tom’s strong shoulder, shutting her eyes and enjoying the cool morning breeze and the scent of her friend.
Okay, can't find any mistakes so far, so yah, hope I'm right.
