Author's Notes: I heard this song on the radio one day and I knew it would be just perfect for Crowfeather and Leafpool. Enjoy!
Leafpool turned away from Crowfeather, her eyes full with tears. "I thought… I thought that you loved me."
"Once, I did," replied Crowfeather. His eyes reflected the pain in Leafpool's as he stood opposite her. The cats milling around them paid no attention to the couple as they shoved past. "But now, I realize what a mistake I made. We can't be together, Leafpool."
"Do you think I don't know that?" Leafpool snapped. Her eyes flashed with a burning anger. "I'm a medicine cat; I'm not supposed to have a mate, let alone one from another Clan!"
Crowfeather winced. Leafpool's words stung him like a bee. "You're better off without me, Leafpool," he whispered. "I've only added to your sadness." He couldn't bear to look at the ThunderClan medicine cat anymore.
"My Clan is destroyed!" Leafpool hissed. "And now you're walking away from me like you don't care."
"Will you listen to me?" Crowfeather asked desperately. "Your Clan needs you right now. They need you to watch over them and heal their wounds. You can't do that with me lingering over my shoulder. Believe me, Leafpool, I would give anything to be with you right now, but your Clan needs you the most."
Leafpool nodded curtly. "I see," she mewed blankly. "Well, go. Get out of here." Her eyes glittered with a sudden loathing. "You mean nothing to me anymore."
Even though Crowfeather knew that what Leafpool had said wasn't true, he backed away. Leafpool snarled one last time before she wheeled around and raced for the medicine cat's den, where several patients waited for her.
Crowfeather stared after her. Why did I tell her I love her, he thought longingly, if that's a lie? He gazed up at the sky, which was quickly covering with clouds. StarClan help me, he prayed, tears sliding down his blackened cheeks.
I was naive not to let you go
When the time was right
I was a fool living in a dream
That I thought could last
But I know that you
Will try to prove me wrong
But it's what I've got to do
I think you're mistaken…
I'm sorry to say
I'm really just a loser
Who's getting in your way
I think you've forgotten
All of your plans
See you never meant to be here
And I think you should know
You're better off alone…
Crowfeather stood at the top of the quarry, gazing down at the destruction below. Leafpool was right, he told himself silently. I left her in such a horrible time. But I don't love her anymore. He whipped his head away from the cats below and turned, running for his life across a hilltop. He needed to be alone.
At last, he reached a large tree, which provided a good amount of shade. He lay beneath it, his eyelids drooping. In the confines of the roots, he fell into a deep, dreamy sleep. The scenery before his eyes went from forest, to blackness, to stars. He glanced beneath his feet to find himself standing on a bridge of stars, looking down on the cats on the ground. He shifted uncomfortably, stepping forward on the stars. "Feathertail!" he cried out, saying the first thing he thought of.
"Yes, my dear?" purred Feathertail, appearing beside Crowfeather. She curled around him, her star-speckled body pressing against his. "I've heard you."
"It's about Leafpool," Crowfeather admitted. "I… I don't love her anymore." It pained him to say those words.
Feathertail frowned. "You know you're just kidding yourself," she told Crowfeather. "You don't love her anymore because you can't- you don't want to risk your reputation for love."
Crowfeather shook his head. "I don't love her," he responded. His heart pounded inside his chest, and he knew deep down it was true. He wanted to love Leafpool, but it would never happen.
"Look at me, Crowfeather," Feathertail instructed him. Unwillingly, Crowfeather lifted his eyes and gazed straight at Feathertail. The pretty young she-cat's eyes swirled with emotion, and they silently told a story. Crowfeather could see himself reflected in them, Leafpool by his side. Suddenly, the image of Leafpool faded away until Crowfeather was joined by a new cat he had originally thought was his shadow in the reflection- Nightcloud.
"Nightcloud?" Crowfeather was confused. "Am I supposed to love her?"
Feathertail shrugged. "She loves you," she mewed. "It's up to you to make the decision."
Crowfeather struggled to take it all in. He didn't love Leafpool, and he didn't love Nightcloud. Despite it all, he had to choose. He inhaled deeply and sighed. "I need to love Nightcloud."
"Really?" Feathertail seemed surprised. Her tail flicked and her ears twitched. "Well, if that's what you think is best."
"That's what I know is best," declared Crowfeather. Though he said these words bravely, his heart sung sadly with the pain of regret. Was he really going to leave Leafpool behind?
And it's clear to me
That everything has changed
'Cause nothing that we do feels
The same any more
And I'll admit
I'll take the blame
Maybe we just moved too fast
And how could expect
Something like this to last…
And I know that you will try
And prove me wrong
But it's what I gotta do
I think you're mistaken
I'm sorry to say
I'm really just a loser
Who's getting in your way…
Back at the ThunderClan camp, thoughts of Crowfeather were wheeling through Leafpool's head. She could hardly concentrate on her work, and whenever someone tried to talk to her, she would get lost in her own thoughts.
"Leafpool? Are you all right?" asked Sandstorm from outside the medicine cat's den. She looked at her daughter with wary eyes. "You seem a little… distressed."
Leafpool's eyes began to tear up. "I've lost Crowfeather," she purred. "I've lost him forever."
Sandstorm padded up to the tabby and touched her nose lightly to Leafpool's. "It'll be all right," she promised. "It's all for the best."
"But I loved him." Leafpool's voice was choked with pain and tears.
"And he loved you," mewed Sandstorm. Her eyes sparkled. "He'll never forget you, and you will never forget him. Some things just… aren't meant to be."
Leafpool blinked away tears. "But it could have worked!" she insisted.
Sandstorm shook her head. "You came back for your Clan," she pointed out. "You put loyalty before love, and you didn't even realize it. You jeopardized your love for your Clan- that's the type of cat you are."
"Maybe somewhere, wherever he is," pondered Leafpool, "he's thinking of me."
"Maybe."
Crowfeather re-entered the ThunderClan camp with as much dignity as he could muster. He made a beeline for the medicine cat's den, stopping as he reached the entrance. "Leafpool?"
"Crowfeather." The voice that came from inside was so emotionless that it almost scared him.
"Can I talk to you?"
"Yes."
Crowfeather stepped uneasily into the den, spotting Leafpool in the corner. "I've made my decision," he mewed.
Leafpool turned around and faced him. "What is that decision?" she asked him.
"Nightcloud is going to be my mate," he replied. Every word was painful.
"Nightcloud?" Leafpool snapped. "But… why?"
"I can't love you anymore," explained Crowfeather. "Trust me, Leafpool, this is what's best."
Leafpool said nothing else; she simply turned around and didn't look back. At last she mewed. "Ok. I trust you."
Crowfeather hadn't expected it to be that easy. He just gave one last nod and left Leafpool behind, not stopping to think about what he had once had, and how he had lost it with a few simple words.
I think you've forgotten
All of your plans
See you never meant to be here
And I think you should know
You're better off alone…
I think you're mistaken
I'm sorry to say
