“Jayfeather? Are you coming into the warriors’ den to look after Mousewhisker?” In the corner of the medicine cat’s den, a small gray ball of fur twitched his whiskers. When he opened his eyes, cloudy pools of liquid sapphire shone. He opened his mouth into a huge yawn, revealing gleaming sharp teeth. “Yes, Rosepaw. One moment,” he mewed. The creamy apprentice bounded off to her mentor. Rosepaw sat down and looked up at a small brown tabby. “Can I please go to bed now? Jayfeather said he’d be there in a moment!” she mewed. Honeytail nodded and the apprentice trotted off to her den. A creamy tan shape drifted over to the brown she-cat. Berrynose rubbed up against her flank. They walked over to the exit of camp to go hunt. Jayfeather turned away sharply. It wasn’t fair. Why could everyone else be happy except him? Hollyblossom had Breezeclaw, and Lionclaw had Heatherfrost. It just wasn’t fair. Jayfeather gave his long gray fur a quick grooming and trotted into the warriors’ den. A beautiful white she-cat bounded up to him as soon as he entered. “Hey, Jayfeather! Have you seen Lionclaw lately?” she mewed. Jayfeather sighed. “Sorry, Icefire. He’s probably out chasing blue squirrels.” Or WindClan she-cat, he added to himself. The white warriors’ whisker drooped and her tail fell low. “Oh. Never mind then,” she meowed. Icefire walked away and settled into a ball of moss. Jayfeather padded over to Mousewhisker, who had a nasty cuts and bruises. “What did you do this time?” meowed Jayfeather. Mousewhisker looked away sharply. The tortoiseshell figure behind him walked over to Jayfeather. “Mousewhisker got caught on rocks in the river over by RiverClan territory. Dapplepelt needed to carry him out to bring him home,” she hissed. Jayfeather just sighed. Poppyleaf was clearly angry that Mousewhisker had left the territory without her. “I wasn’t the one who decided to put territory by that stupid river!” he hissed. Poppyleaf glared at him and walked away to join Hazeltail. “You know, you can’t be with Minnowmist,” Jayfeather meowed. Mousewhisker just pouted as he settled into his nest. Jayfeather turned around and stopped short. There was the most gorgeous gray tabby she-cat he had ever known. “Hello, Jayfeather,” she meowed sweetly. “Aren’t you here to look after Mousewhisker while Leafpool trains Ivytail in ShadowClan?” Jayfeather was frozen to the spot. “Jayfeather?” mewed the tabby. “What? Oh, yes. Umm… Yes. Littlecloud really should have taken an apprentice before he died. But Ivytail should be good,” he mewed. The tabby yawned and settled into a nest. “You’re going to freeze if you stay out there all night!” she mewed playfully. “What? Oh, right. Sorry, Cinderlilly,” he meowed. He settled into the nest with her and tucked his paws out. Cinderlilly looked lovingly at him, even if he couldn’t see it. She loved him, but he was a medicine cat. He didn’t feel the same way about her. Jayfeather cuddled closer to Cinderlilly. This was more than what he felt towards the magic stick. He knew what this was. So they stayed there, tails twined, whiskers touching, their hearts in love. Forever.
