"But I love you!" Ashfur's protest rang through Whitewing's mind as she tried to keep up with the dawn patrol. How she wished the words were for her, but no. It was for Squirrelflight. Whitewing raised her head to see the playful ginger she-cat. What was so great about her that Ashfur still could not get over her, although she had kits!
"Whitewing! Have you got maggot-gut? If not, get a move on!" A shrill voice interrupted her thoughts. Sighing, Whitewing increased her speed to catch up with the rest of them. "Wait for me!"
After the dawn patrol returned, Whitewing spotted Ashfur and his sister, Ferncloud, sharing tongues. Something suddenly possessed her to go and eavesdrop on their conversation. She crept behind a tall tree and waited.
"Still haven't gotten over her, have you?" Ferncloud asked Ashfur. When he shook his head, Ferncloud shook her head in disapproval.
"Ashfur, don't be a mouse-brain," Ferncloud meowed as she twitched her whiskers. When Ashfur stubbornly shook his head, she sighed at continued.
"You know, there's a cat who's been padding after you, you know," Ferncloud mewed. When Ashfur still did not respond, she stood up and walked away, all the while shaking her head. Just then, Whitewing realized which direction Ferncloud was headed for: right towards her. Whitewing braced herself for an extra-loud scolding, but it never came. Instead Ferncloud eyed her with anxious eyes.
"Whitewing, can you do me a favor?" Ferncloud asked Whitewing. She looked surprised, but then nodded. "It's about Ashfur..." Ferncloud paused as if she was having second thoughts. Then she continued, "He still can't get over Squirrelflight. Please, Whitewing." Ferncloud's eyes burned a hole through Whitewing's. "Please teach Ashfur how to love again."
That night, all was quiet. It was the middle of newleaf. Prey was running, and the Clans were at peace. Although everything was quiet, there was still trouble. Whitewing saw Ashfur exit the warriors den and pad his way towards a clearing. He sat down gently and lifted his head to stare at the full moon. Whitewing was about to retire to the warriors den, but she suddenly remembered Ferncloud's troubled words. "No more excuses," Whitewing meowed to herself. "Now's the chance to tell him."
Whitewing padded slowly towards Ashfur. Moonlight lit up his gray fur, turning it silver. His blue eyes shone with brilliance. Whitewing took a deep breath. This was it, she thought.
"Hi, Ashfur. Mind if I join you?" Whitewing meowed when she approached him. Ashfur looked up in surprise. When he saw Whitewing's familiar face, he shook his head and motioned for her to sit beside him with his tail. When Whitewing got herself settled, she felt her fur prickle. This length between her and Ashfur was too close for comfort. Whitewing stared at Ashfur for a few heartbeats before she realized that she had to make the first move. Heart thudding, she meowed, "You miss her, don't you?"
Whitewing's question had taken Ashfur by surprise. He paused for a heartbeat, suddenly stiff, before he answered, "Yes, Whitewing. I miss Squirrelflight every day. Every time Firestar calls a Clan meeting, I see not him but his daughter instead. Every time I see Jaypaw, I imagine him to by my son. Every time I see Brambleclaw a hot anger burns inside me, and I am filled with a rouge desire to slash him. I miss Squirrelflight so much that it hurts." On hearing those words, Whitewing felt like wailing to the whole of StarClan. He was so stupid! So stupid!
Possessed by an angry demon, Whitewing hissed, "Ashfur, you are such a mouse-brain that you can't even see something that's happenning right under your very nose." Ashfur was startled by Whitewing's sudden outburst. "You can't see it, can you?" Ashfur just tilted his head to one side as he shook his head slowly. Anger cut through Whitewing. He couldn't tell. He really couldn't tell.
"Ashfur!" Desperation crept up Whitewing's usually gentle voice. “Ashfur of ThunderClan! I love you! I love you more than a queen loves her kits, but you can't even see!" Tears fell down her face, getting tangled in her whiskers before finally dropping onto the grown. Whitewing abruptly got up and headed for the warriors den. No, this was not the way she had imagined it. Not at all.
