Great, Jaypaw muttered inwardly, hearing Leafpool bounding towards him. What did she want now? Couldn’t he get any rest toady? Jaypaw listened to the sheets of rain cascading down outside the medicine cat den and shivered.
“Jaypaw! We’ve run out of Juniper berries and Mousefur’s got a bellyache. Come on now, on your paws and out!” She rushed the grey cat.
“I’m getting up, I’m getting up!” Jaypaw spat, heaving himself to a standing position and glaring sightlessly.
“Come on, Jaypaw! Mousefur’s waiting.” Leafpool called from the exit to the den.
Grumbling, Jaypaw followed his mentor out into the freezing Leaf-bare weather, rain pelting him and chilling him to the bone.
-----
“Take as many as you can.” Leafpool reminded Jaypaw for the umpteenth time.
Like I didn’t know already, Jaypaw growled in his mind. Scenting the berries, Jaypaw carefully grasped a large mouthful in his jaws, their sweet scent wafting into his nose and making him hungry.
“Lets get out of this rain, Jaypaw.” Leafpool meowed, trotting off back to camp.
Jaypaw trodded after the tabby, pulling his soaked paws through the sodden grass. He could almost see Leafpool glowering at him, wanting him to hurry up. Well, I’m going as fast as I can, through this terrible rain, he thought, padding faster.
-----
Jaypaw and Leafpool trekked along the WindClan border, Jaypaw lagging behind. Why did they have to come out now? In the torrential rain? Pouring? It was like StarClan was crying…
“Look Jaypaw, its Barkface and Kestrelpaw!” Mewed, snapping Jaypaw out of his thoughts.
“I can’t see them, in case you didn’t notice,” Jaypaw growled under his breath, padding after Leafpool to greet the WindClan medicine cats.
”Hello there, Leafpool! What are you and Jaypaw doing out in this kind of weather?” Barkface questioned rustily.
“I could ask you the same thing! Mousefur’s got a bellyache, so we’ve just come out to get some juniper,” Leafpool replied, Jaypaw feeling her tail swish past him, motioning to the juniper she had set at her paws.
”Ah, right. Me and Kestrelpaw are out looking for some marigold…” Jaypaw let the older cats talk.
He then noticed Kestrelpaw. The tomcat hadn’t said anything, not even a quick ’hello’. Jaypaw mentally snorted.
How rude…he thought, then realized he hasn’t either.
“Uh, hi Kestrelpaw. How’s the prey running?” He mumbled, felling slightly awkward with this friendly-business.
“Good, thank you.” Jaypaw answered.
Jaypaw waited. There was a strange air around Kestrelpaw, and he could feel the other tom’s green eyes scorching a hole in his pelt. What was wrong with him?
“Well, um…are you going to the gathering tomorrow?” Jaypaw ventured, desperately trying to make conversation.
“I think so.” Kestrelpaw mewed, then fell silent again.
”Right…well…that’s good. So am I, if Leafpool lets me.” Jaypaw replied, doing his best attempt at ‘cheerfulness’.
Leafpool brushed her pelt against Jaypaw’s.
”It was nice seeing you both. See you at the gathering.” Leafpool meowed, scooping up the juniper berries.
Just as Jaypaw was about to leave, he felt something nudge him. Turning, Jaypaw’s sightless blue eyes met Kestrelpaw’s burning green.
”Meet me here this Moonhigh. I have something important to tell you.” He whispered in the blind tomcats ear, sending a strange feeling down Jaypaw.
”Jaypaw! Mousefur is suffering! Lets GO!” Leafpool called impatiently.
Jaypaw swiftly gave a brisk nod in Kestrelpaw’s direction before bounding after Leafpool.
-----
Jaypaw scowled. It had been raining even harder since they had got back, and now he was supposed to go and see Kestrelpaw. Kestrelpaw. What would he want to tell me? Jaypaw sneered to himself.
“Hey Jaypaw! Do you wanna come eat something?” Jaypaw lifted his sense to see Lionpaw.
“No thanks, I think I’m going to go for a walk.” Jaypaw replied, shaking his head and standing up.
Lionpaw’s eyes widened.
“You? Walk? In the pouring rain?! You must be crazy!” Lionpaw chuckled, bounding off to eat fresh-kill with some other apprentices.
Jaypaw suddenly doubted this meeting with Kestrelpaw.
“Why would he even care about me? I don’t even know him properly. Plus he’s annoying.” Jaypaw muttered, wondering whether to go or not.
“Well, I’d better see what he wants.” Jaypaw decided, heading for the camp’s exit.
-----
“Ugggh…” Jaypaw groaned, stumbling over something and splashing into a large murky puddle.
Where was Kestrelpaw? Jaypaw was almost as the spot where they had encountered before.
“Jaypaw!” The grey cat’s head snapped around to where the voice had come from.
“Kestrelpaw.” He stated, standing up.
Then, there was an awkward silence.
Jaypaw opened his mouth to say something, but shut it again. What was his problem?
Heartbeats passed.
Jaypaw had had enough.
“Look, if you’ve got nothing to say, I’m going.” Jaypaw hissed, turning and beginning to march away.
“Wait…” Kestrelpaw mewed, stepping after Jaypaw.
Jaypaw stopped. A flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating Jaypaw’s ice-cold eyes.
“Wait for what?” Jaypaw questioned, unaware who he was asking.
“Jaypaw…I have to tell you something.” Kestrelpaw mumbled.
Jaypaw wondered whether to run or not.
“You see…I-I’ve always admired Y-you, I thought you were so a-amazing, being blind but still being a-able to do things. I really liked you, but you didn’t seem to l-like me back a-and then I started to like y-you more, but I couldn’t t-tell you and…” Kestrelpaw stuttered, trailing off and staring helplessly at Jaypaw.
Jaypaw had no idea what to say. No one had ever told him that they liked him a lot only his kin, and defiantly not by a medicine cat, let alone a tom. He was utterly speechless.
“ …But a t-tom loving another tom is c-crazy and it could never happen a-and StarClan would h-hate me forever-” Kestrelpaw was cut off as Jaypaw slapped his tail around his mouth.
Kestrelpaw’s eyes widened, expecting a bitter snarl of anger to erupt from Jaypaw, but it didn’t. In fact, the grey tom was smiling.
“Kestrelpaw. No one has ever told me that before. So, uh, thank you.” He mewed with a level tone, still smiling.
Kestrelpaw stared.
Kestrelpaw gawked.
Kestrelpaw couldn’t believe his ears.
“R-really? Do…do you l-like me back?” He mumbled.
“Yes. I do like you. A lot, in fact.” Jaypaw grinned.
Kestrelpaw had never seen the blind apprentice smile. It lit a warm fire in his heart.
“A-actually…Jaypaw…I think that I l-love you.” Kestrelpaw whispered.
A small thought still lingered in the back of Jaypaw’s mind: Claw him to pieces, a tom loving a tom isn’t right, but Jaypaw ignored it.
“I think I love you too, Kestrelpaw.” Jaypaw agreed.
The rain was clearing already, and the cloud vaporizing, revealing the moon, which shone down upon the two young toms. Jaypaw pressed his head against Kestrelpaw, and the apprentices gazed off into the moon, forgetting everyone and everything else.
Flamers will be pointed at and then have tea thrown at them =D
