Title: Walk By My Side [In life, in death]
Author: Icy
Pairing: Crowfeather x Leafpool
Rating: G
Summary: Crowfeather discovers his [forbidden] love for Leafpool.
Warning: May contain spoilers for those who have not read Starlight. Also may offend CrowxLeaf haters. All regrets.
Disclaimer: Warriors isn't mine, obviously. If so, Crowfeather would never have fallen in love with Leafpool, Feathertail would never had died, and I wouldn't be writing this oneshot.
Cover: N/A
Author's Notes: Another of those I-was-bored-in-school oneshots. I could do better, probably, so I'd like some honest feedback from y'out there. Crowfeather POV. Regrets to Blizz if I accidentally ignored some of those rules/forms. I find them very hard to remember. All regrets, all regrets. I would modify this post if needed (however I have no modify button) so moderators/administrator have all rights to kill me/edit this post. All regrets.
The soft padding of paws on the grass was deafened by the terror-filled yowl that rang through the air, sending a ruffle through my fur; an invisible paw squeezed my heart.
Feathertail--are you watching me now? Help me, will you? I prayed to the beautiful starry spirit that had sacrificed herself for me...I could feel my eyes grow watery, but I shook my head. Not here. Not now. Relax, Crowfeather, I told myself. She would never leave me in life...
And not in death, she finished my thought gently. Pushing my paws faster, I managed to smile. She would not leave me, never.
I was faster than them. I was closer to them than ever. Suddenly, a thought burst in my head. They were two strong, healthy ShadowClan warriors. That was two against one. But they are traitors! I thought. If I had to fight them, then StarClan--and Feathertail--would be at my side. I would win. The air rushed against my face, the wind like thorns stabbing my nose. My throat was too dry to even manage a single croak. But fury and determination blinded me. The ShadowClan traitors were the only things I saw; I felt nothing at all.
You will succeed, She said in her echoing voice that sounded like gently flowing water, trickling across the soil. You can go on. She told me softly.
The trees were blocking my path. Ahead of me, I saw a pretty tabby. Who was it? I thought to myself. But I had no time to think. Suddenly, Feathertail's voice echoed loudly in my head. STOP!! You are approaching the treacherous cliff guarding ThunderClan's camp. Stop, or you will fall over it. I toppled back wards to an unsteady halt, then stood up straight, shaking dirt from my fur. Abruptly, a desparate cry shattered the air--directly in front of me--then faded.
I leaned cautiously forward. The ShadowClan warriors had fallen, but clinging onto the slippery stone was Leafpool, the medicine cat of ThunderClan. That pang that lightly shook me when I looked at her hit me again. What was it? It was familiar...but unrecognizable...Something from long ago?
No response from Feathertail.
"Crowfeather," She begged, eyes pleading, desperation ringing through her voice. "Crowfeather! Help me!!" She continued, voice shrill and rough with agony.
There it was--that was what the pang I felt when I saw Leafpool was!! Memories hit me with surprising force, I nearly backed away. How--how could it be? No, no, no.
The memory was as clear as it was seconds after it happened. There she was, my beloved Feathertail, dying before my paws. There I stood, unable to do something, unable to speak, defenseless...Agony shook me.
I'm so sorry, Feathertail!I pleaded with her in my mind, unaware I was saying it out loud. Bitter tears stung my eyes. I should never had let you fall!!
I knew what she would have wanted me to do. I leaned forward, and pulled her onto level, steady ground. My paws tingled where they had touched hers. We stared at each other for a moment.
"I did it. I saved you."
She watched me, something flickering in her beautiful eyes. "I must be the last cat you want to save," She remarked lightly, breaking the silence. I stared at her, shaking my head.
"Do you really think so? Don't you know how much I care about you?" I started. I will finish. I would tell her the truth.
"You walk in my dreams, Leafpool," I murmured, that forgotten feeling we call love easing over me.
And I will always walk with you too, Feathertail reminded me gently.
The evening wind whooshed gently across my face as we gazed at each other, eyes full of a desparate, seemingly never-ending love.
