Author's Notes: I'm not saying that this pair exists canon-wise. I simply thought it would be fun to write about it. This was not meant to sound canon. Oh yeah, and Hollypaw hints at LionxHoney at one point in the story. I still like LionxHeather better. Do not lose faith in me! xD
A full moon shone through the tree canopy above the cats' heads, dappling the ground with shadow and silver. Four powerful-looking cats sat atop a branch, gazing down at the cats below.
Breezepaw slid along the outside edge of the clearing, trying to avoid the other apprentices. He preferred to sit alone during Gatherings; the other Clan's apprentices had nothing interesting to say anyway. He turned his head to glanced to the side and came into contact with something, knocking himself over.
"Sorry," a voice mewed, and Breezepaw leaped up onto his feet. He stood across from Hollypaw, the ThunderClan apprentice whom he didn't particularly like. The black she-cat frowned. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Breezepaw replied flatly. He licked dust out of his chest fur.
Usually, at this time, Hollypaw would simply have walked off, but she was still there. "What's new in WindClan, Breezepaw?" she asked.
Surprise flooded him. "Why do you want to know?" he snapped. "WindClan's none of your business."
"Gee, Breezepaw, no need to get so protective," Hollypaw joked, "I just want to know how your training's going."
"Well, I've learned enough to rip your ears off," mumbled Breezepaw, just loudly enough for Hollypaw to hear.
Hollypaw laughed sarcastically. "I'm sure you have."
Breezepaw grew suspicious. What is she playing at? he wondered in irritation. "Are you done talking to me yet?"
"Not yet."
What in StarClan's name? mused Breezepaw silently. "Well, what do you want to talk about, then?"
The two stood in silence, staring at each other with surprise mingling in their eyes. Hollypaw broke the gaze uncomfortably. "I don't know," she mewed.
"Um... how is ThunderClan doing?" Breezepaw suggested, feeling suddenly awkward. He had never felt this way around Hollypaw before, mostly because they were always bickering. Now that they had nothing really to fight over, they just stood there, frozen like startled prey.
Hollypaw smiled. "Good. I think Lionpaw's in love. With Honeypaw."
Silence followed. "Why are you telling me this?" Breezepaw asked, tilting his head.
A soft sigh escaped Hollypaw's mouth. "I keep telling myself I'll find love, but then I get discouraged every time I see a tom walk by and I think, 'He'll never love me.'"
Pain struck Breezepaw's heart. "I think you just found what you were looking for," he mewed suddenly. He couldn't believe that he had just confessed to Hollypaw. His fur flushed hot with embarassment. He had been hiding his feelings by being mean and annoying to her, trying secretly to get her attention. For the first time, he was being honest to the one cat he loved.
Hollypaw's eyes widened, but then she stepped forward and pressed her muzzle to Breezepaw's. "I think I did," she purred.
"What do you mean we can't see each other again?"
Breezepaw backed away from Hollypaw. "Hollypaw, it's too dangerous for us," he mewed, trying to knock sense into the othe apprentice. "Think about it! What if we were discovered?"
"I don't care," snarled Hollypaw. "I want to see you all the time, Breezepaw! Nothing can cut me off from you!"
"We have no choice," Breezepaw sighed. "I'm sorry. I'll still love you, though, you know that."
Hollypaw's eyes brimmed with tears. "Breezepaw..."
Breezepaw padded over to her and swiped his tongue over her ear affectionately. "Just calm down, Hollypaw, this is nothing to get mad over."
The black she-cat pulled away from him. "You're wrong," she snapped, tears flowing down her face, "you're very wrong. I thought you wanted to see me. I thought you needed to be with me."
"I do!" Breezepaw insisted. "But it's too risky!"
"I don't care!" Hollypaw snarled. Her voice rose and she yowled, "Breezepaw, I hate you!" She whirled around and took off into ThunderClan territory.
Breezepaw stared after her with sadness glimmering in his eyes. Finally, he smirked and whispered, "I love you, too."
