"So then," Tawnypelt continued through a bite of mouse, "Cedarheart knew he was in trouble--imagining being caught by Blackstar having a chat with Weaselfur on the ShadowClan border! I thought Blackstar was going to kill him he looked for angry, but then Russetfur showed up!"
Stormfur smiled as the tortoiseshell she-cat continued her story. Her words fading like background noise in light of her green eyes. He had only just gotten her to open up. She was charming and has the prettiest laugh, though he supposed she would shred him for saying such a thing.
Still, they had grown close enough over the journey that every time she named Cedarheart, with that casual, almost shy hint of affection, it was like claws raking his belly. He dipped his head down to take a bite of the mouse they were sharing, keeping his warm amber eyes fixed on her.
Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw sat a bit aways, eating their own meal. Brambleclaw was focused on eating and planning the next stage of their journey, a thoughful, intense look on his face that made Squirrelpaw scowl when she looked at him. The old fleabag could lighten up once and awhile! Something that Stormfur and Tawnypelt didn't seem to have trouble doing, she thought with a quick smile, glancing at them.
She looked at Brambleclaw smugly, her green eyes glittering with apprentice-like glee at having seen something he hadn't noticed. Brambleclaw caught her eyes and looked up with irritation. "What?"
A silver tabby and a smokey black tom appeared behind Brambleclaw. "Yes, what is it Squirrelpaw?" Purred Feathertail--the tabby, curiously. "I can spot that look from foxtails away." Crowpaw snorted and sat down with his own catch--a plump starling.
Squirrelpaw twitched her tail, indicating the two cat's who were chortling merrily close by over their mouse. Brambleclaw narrowed his eyes at her sternly, "So what if they're eating together Squirrelpaw? Sometimes you're too nosy."
"Well, what do you expect, she is a ThunderClanner." Growled Crowpaw, but Feathertail placed her tail across his mouth as Squirrelpaw squawked indignantly.
"I think it's lovely that my brother has found someone to enjoy himself with." She meowed in her quiet voice, "He was quite disappointed when Dawnflower entered the nursery. Besides--" she winked at Crowpaw, "If he has some other cat to worry about, perhaps he'll stop watching me like a hawk."
Brambleclaw's amber eyes narrowed. "I think all of you are jumping to conclusions. I share a meal with Squirrelpaw sometimes, and we're not in love!"
Crowpaw snorted in laughter, trying to vain to contain himself, and rolling on the ground in mirth.
Brambleclaw glared at him, looking quite deflated. "What?"
Feathertail just smiled and shook her head, pale blue eyes carrying a spark of delicate humor. "Just ignore him."
