Fireheart followed the outskirts of trees along the shore of the river. He clung reluctantly to their sheltered leafy border, which offering the only camouflage before he stepped into open ground, where a RiverClan patrol could easily pick him out along the sparse shore.
Narrowing his eyes, he slunk away from the trees, heading towards the sunningrocks, where he would once again be met with shelter, this time in the form of stone boulders. He let out breath he hadn't been aware he had been holding as he ducked behind one of the usually warm gray stones. The stones were cold today, chilled by late leaf-fall wind, and his pelt prickled when brushed against it.
Every one of his senses were alert. ThunderClan cats had already been caught once on RiverClan territory, and the border skirmish result had not turned out well. The ginger tom shivered at the thought of what Leopardfur, RiverClan's deputy, would do if she caught him on their territory again.
Setting aside his fears and remembering his purpose, Fireheart opened his mouth and drew in the scents. The tantalizing scent of vole was present, but Fireheart wasn't interested in hunting. Instead, be focused on a faint scent of RiverClan, carried downriver by the same chilly breeze that ruffled his short coat.
The RiverClan patrol had not been as far away as their scent indicated. Soon after Fireheart scented them, he heard them. Peaking around the corner of a boulder, Fireheart spotted three lithe cat shapes. He recognized only Silverstream, the pretty silver tabby he knew too well for his liking.
He watched as they drew closer, the hairs on his spine rising to alert him of danger. Fireheart closed his eyes and sent a quick prayer to StarClan that Silverstream would smell him, without alerting the two other RiverClanners. He opened his eyes again, and saw Silverstream sharing words with her two Clanmates. The words "scent", "river", and "upstream" reached his ears, and he felt secure enough that the she-cat had not set a trap when the two other cats nodded and headed upstream.
After they had left Fireheart's view, Silverstream padded down to the riverbank and swam the length. "Fireheart? Come out Fireheart, I know you're there." The sound of the she-cat's sweet voice made Fireheart even more nervous. "I swear on StarClan, I would never let anything happen to Graystripe's best friend."
The ginger tom's body leaped cautiously out from behind the sunningrocks. "Silverstream." he greeted her abruptly, trying his best to keep his tone cold, but finding it hard to stop friendliness from entering his voice.
"Silverstream, I had to come see you. I hoped that you would listen to reason, since Graystripe won't." Fireheart paused, sorrow etched in his voice, "You have to stop seeing him. The tension between our Clans is bad enough."
"I can't." The silver she-cat replied, and her voice was quiet yet stubborn. "I love him."
"Silverstream..." Fireheart drew in breath, nervous about how the she-cat would react to his next words. "I love him too. Please, don't take him away from his Clan. Or me."
Silverstream purred humorously. "You can't love him like I do Fireheart. I know he's your friend, but Graystripe and my love is more then friendship."
Fireheart shook his head, his green eyes begging her to understand. "No, Silverstream. The way I feel for Graystripe... It's more then just friendship too. When I'm around him, everything seems brighter. Like, no matter what happens, everything will be okay, because we're together. My heart swells and I feel... I feel so alive."
"Fireheart," the ginger tom's fears were confirmed when Silverstream's voice was thick with surprise and confusion, and disbelief. "That's the way mates are supposed to feel. You and Graystripe, you're both toms. And Graystripe loves me. He sees you as a friend, almost a brother. Nothing more."
Fireheart drew in a shaky breath, eyes level with Silverstream's. "Please, understand. I know it could never... I know how Graystripe feels. But don't take him away from me. Anything but that."
"I'm sorry." And it sounded like she was. "But it's too late." Silverstream's voice was quiet and sincere, and Fireheart was sure he imagined a trace of triumph in it.
