Lionclaw smiled as he nuzzled Hazelpelt, amber eyes brimming with adoration. "I love you too, Hazelpelt."
The gray and white femme purred deep in her throat, nuzzling Lionclaw's neck and wrapping her tail around his front leg. Hazelpelt was beautiful to him, her mind brimming with knowledge and the bravery of a tiger. Lionclaw had admired Hazelpelt since they were apprentices, and he guessed that Hazelpelt felt the same way. They went back to ThunderClan camp with hearts as light as a feather. Although for some reason, Lionclaw could only think of heather-colored eyes and a voice softer than clouds...
Jayfeather smirked as Lionclaw padded into the camp, blind blue eyes staring through him. "You stink of phermones, Lionclaw. But you've been in love for a while-- who's the unlucky she-cat?"
Lionclaw grinned and batted his brother's gray ears with a front paw. "Hazelpelt." Jayfeather's eyes widened and his tail twitched, but he said nothing. "Know who's going to the Gathering tonight?" Lionclaw asked, feeling that the silence was a bit uncomfortable.
"So far, it's me, you, Sorreltail, Dustpelt, Hazelpelt, Foxpaw, Brambleclaw, and Hollytail." Jayfeather answered, and Lionclaw felt a wave of relief off him. What was he hiding? It didn't matter right now... besides, Jayfeather couldn't hide anything. Lionclaw nodded and padded off.
Jayfeather was right about who went to the Gathering-- Lionclaw padded between his siblings as he entered the island, stepping lightly off the tree. He was aware of Hazelpelt's eyes on him.
They nuzzled each other as they entered the island. Cats were already consorting with each other, and the usual friendly chatter echoed around the clearing. As Lionclaw split off from Hazelpelt to talk with a ShadowClan warrior he met earlier, he heard a soft voice behind him. One all too familiar.
"I see you have a mate, Lionclaw?" Heatherfoot stepped out from the throng of cats, tilting her head to one side. Lionclaw whipped around to see her standing there, and he gulped. Suddenly he lost his voice.
Heatherfoot seemed rather amused by his lack of voice. "Well... want to take a walk? This place is awfully crowded tonight, and the Gathering won't start for a bit." Her eyes bore into Lionclaw, making him melt. Hadn't he gotten over his old crush on her already? Did he still love her? Twitching his tail, Lionclaw nodded. As he looked over his shoulder, he saw Hazelpelt staring at him, eyes glaring and jaw agape.
About five or six foxlengths onto the beach, Heatherfoot stopped and looked at him, straight in the eyes. "Lionclaw..."
Lionclaw pressed his muzzle into hers. Heatherfoot was startled by his reaction-- as was he. He didn't expect it at all. "Heatherfoot... I'm sorry. I haven't gotten over you." The scene flashed, clearly, in his mind, when he walked away from Heatherfoot-- back then Heatherpaw-- at a Gathering moons earlier to talk to Hazelpelt. The rejection had severely deflated Heatherfoot into silence.
"Lionclaw.... neither have I. I love you." Heatherfoot meowed, her whiskers twitching as she pressed herself against Lionclaw's side. Their pelts seemed to melt in the warm night, tails entwining. Lionclaw purred. "I love you too, Heatherfoot. Not like Hazelpelt, or anyone else. There will never be anyone like you." For a few more heartbeats they stayed there in their embrace, and Heatherfoot pulled away suddenly.
"But Lionclaw, what will we tell them? That we're seeing cats from other Clans?" Worry mixed with love in her heather colored eyes. As he stared into her optics, suddenly Lionclaw's loyalty faded away. He didn't care-- he would be with Heatherfoot, no matter what their leaders would say. "The warrior code cannot prevent our love." He meowed, and Heatherfoot's eyes softened. And they stood together, for a time, as the full moon gleamed above them.
