Disclaimer: If Warriors was mine, Firestar would be dead by now, with Graystripe as leader. And Crowfeather would lead WindClan.
I padded after my mentor, as was the way of the apprentice. I followed his every movement and copied it carefully, his stalking techniques and fighting strategies. I took his reprimands seriously, and tried to be an apprentice worthy of who many cats thought to be the greatest warrior in ThunderClan.
Tigerclaw was a good mentor at one point, his amber eyes gleaming as I imitated his stalking crouch perfectly. We trained together almost daily, sometimes with the other apprentices. But I preferred training alone with my mentor, admiring the sheen of his dark tabby pelt in the early light, the rippling of his muscles beneath. He was magnificent.
I hadn’t always thought of Tigerclaw like this. We had been a in a normal apprentice-mentor relationship. Then one day, everything just changed.
Tigerclaw and I were hunting near Sunningrocks. It was the first time I had heard my mentor laugh, and suddenly the world spun around me, and I felt my heartbeat quicken. The huge cat in front of me began to glow with a godly light, and from that moment on, I became so much more diligent in hopes that Tigerclaw would one day see me as I saw him.
But it seemed he never really saw me at all. The great warrior was relatively cold most days, speaking to me in short sentences, orders usually. He did not seem to acknowledge me as an individual, just another apprentice. I knew I could never be anything more to him until I became a warrior. When I became a warrior, I thought, Tigerclaw would take me seriously.
Maybe even love me. As I loved him.
But it was not to be.
There was a battle with RiverClan.
I felt as if all of StarClan were with me, or perhaps just a bit of Tigerclaw’s strength. I knew my fighting was nothing compared to that of the cat leading us, nothing compared to the cat I loved and trained under. But I was fighting for him, and it made me all the more sharp and battle-hungry. Many cats felt this newfound strength in my claws, and ran from it, feared it. I felt unstoppable.
“Oakheart is dead!” yowled Redtail, the deputy of ThunderClan. He raced past me as I sent a cat squealing back into RiverClan territory. His wounds looked serious, and I wondered if Oakheart, the RiverClan deputy, had inflicted them.
Suddenly, ThunderClan was called to retreat, and I hurried away with the others. I noticed Tigerclaw was not following. Worried, I turned around and hid in the brush. My eyes grew wide with shock as my mentor’s jaws closed tightly around Redtail’s throat and a high-pitched scream ended his life. Tigerclaw dropped the body and looked around. His intense gaze seemed to fixate me, and I could not move. He knew I had witnessed Redtail’s murder.
The realization hit me with a strong force, allowing me control once more over my muscles. But I paused before running back to the ThunderClan camp, to stare at the dark warrior that had for so long haunted my dreams. I felt the agony of Redtail’s murder as though it were my own, for I knew that I could no longer look at Tigerclaw and let the rest of the world become hazy with my adoration for him.
For Tigerclaw had left a dark hole in me, wide and gaping, like an endless black sky that I would forever walk beneath, cursing and blessing his name at the same time.
