I could be mean, I could be angry; you know I could be just like you...
"No! I won't do it!"
Tigerstar smirked. "Listen to me, Brambleclaw," he crooned. "With my training, you can become the most powerful cat in the forest. And Hawkfrost will rule beside you, as a leader."
Brambleclaw looked straight into his father's burning amber eyes, which bored into him. "I- I can't. I'm loyal to my Clan."
"Loyalty to your Clan is quite vague," explained Tigerstar. "The warrior code says that a leader's word is law. And whether he knows it or not, Firestar is begging for a new deputy."
The word begging was emphasized so much that Brambleclaw shivered. He broke eye contact and gazed at his paws.
Hawkfrost nodded and stepped forward. "Tigerstar is right," he assured his half-brother. "If you follow him, you'll come to great power. I already had a glimpse of power before, and it was wonderful." He nodded. "Listen, Brambleclaw, listen."
I could be fake, I could be stupid; you know I could be just like you…
Brambleclaw awoke from a shattering sleep. He glanced around, looking bemused at what had just happened. Tigerstar wanted him and Hawkfrost to take over their Clans and then the other Clans as well? There had always been four Clans in the forest, and Brambleclaw wasn't about to let that change.
Or was he?
You thought you were there to guide me; you were only in my way…
The forest that surrounded Brambleclaw seemed quite foreboding. He crept through it with a wary look in his eyes until he reached the clearing.
"Brambleclaw, welcome," purred Tigerstar. His voice was like poisoned honey, calling to Brambleclaw with a pull that he couldn't ignore.
"Hello, my father," replied Brambleclaw flatly. But it wasn't a bored sort of flat, it was more like a zombie sort of flat. Like he was being controlled.
Hawkfrost's blue eyes glinted out from the darkness like shards of ice. "We've been waiting for your return," he mewed.
Brambleclaw gulped and turned to face Tigerstar. His legs were shaking, and his voice wavered as he spoke. "I have returned."
"Have you made your decision?" Tigerstar queried. He gazed down at his son with malice.
"I have." Brambleclaw's eyes flashed. "And I've chosen my own path. I won't do it."
"Fool!" spat Tigerstar, and jumped at Brambleclaw. The two almost identical cats tussled on the ground, and Hawkfrost stood by and watched. He was greatly enjoying this.
Brambleclaw broke away and burst off into the dark forest. Wake up, he told himself. Wake up.
I could be mean, I could be angry; you know I could be just like you…
