Skygaze. That was the name that Sunstar gave me so many moons ago, the name that my Clanmates cheered. The name that made my heart swell up with pride, the name that commended my beautiful pools -- one yellow, one blue, like the sun and sky.
And before that it was Skypaw. Skypaw, curious yet attentive. Skypaw, always ready for action. Skypaw, who loved life and her position in the Clan more than anything else in the forest. Skypaw, the pale grey wonder with eyes keener than even our best hunter’s.
I still remember the day I was given that wonderful, beauteous name, as if it were only a few dawns past. My mother had groomed me until my scruffy fur shone, although at twelve moons I was extremely capable of grooming myself. My brother, Smallpaw, stood by my side, while his best friend Patchpaw watched enthusiastically. And from the nursery my mentor Frogtail watched, her little darling Frostkit playing around her paws.
Tawnyspots, our handsome young deputy, smiled at me as he made his way to the foot of the Highrock. He gave a small yowl to silence the younger apprentices -- Specklepaw and Rosepaw . Sunstar’s own yowl brought the meeting to order, and I stepped forward.
“I, Sunstar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as warriors in their turn.”
He turned to Smallpaw. “Smallpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?”
“I do.” murmured my brother, trembling slightly.
“Skypaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?”
“I do.” I replied, and found that the trembling was involuntary.
“Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior names. Smallpaw, from this moment you shall be known as Smallear. StarClan honors your bravery and your strength, and we welcome you as a full member of ThunderClan.”
Cats all around us stifled cheers as Sunstar turned to me.
“Skypaw, from this moment you shall be known as Skygaze. StarClan honors your intelligence and agility, and we welcome you as a full member of ThunderClan.”
And so it was over. The cheers came then, like a surging wave, and amidst the rush of cats wanting to congratulate me I could do nothing but blink my eyes, one yellow, one blue, like the sun and the sky.
That was many moons ago. For season upon season I proved myself to the Clan with my keen sight, and they loved me. Patchpaw became a warrior, Patchpelt; Rosepaw became Rosetail; Specklepaw Speckletail; Brownpaw Brownstump, the best tree-climber in the forest; and Frostkit an apprentice under a half-sister of Frogtail’s. All was wonderful and we prospered, until one fateful day, when the sun was not shining and the sky was dark…
“How are we doing?” murmured Rosetail, sidling up towards her apprentice, Bluepaw, who was in the middle of her final assessment. I stood nearby with my apprentice, Redpaw, while Lionpaw and Tigerpaw battled under my brother’s and Patchpelt’s supervision.
“We’re doing fine.” replied Bluepaw, eyeing a plump thrush on the pile of fresh-kill she’d caught so far.
“Go ahead, you deserve it.” mewed Rosetail softly, and her apprentice began to hungrily attack the prey.
“Can I have one, Skygaze?” Redpaw rasped pleadingly. He quickly made his way to the uneaten pieces and took a big sniff. “Ugh! Never mind, they stink!”
Bluepaw indignantly shooed him away from her catch, then stopped midshoo. “He’s right! They do smell rather unpleasant.”
“Maggots, perhaps?” I sighed, padding up to the pile and beginning to root through. Everything was perfectly fine, and it seemed that the scent was coming from elsewhere...
“No!” I hissed. “It smells of Shadow--”
I broke off as a large gray tom leaped upon my shoulders, his claws raking me as I whirled to shake him off. Lionpaw came from out of nowhere at bit the tom’s flank; he ran shrieking from the battlefield, trailing blood.
“Thanks!” I hissed, watching as two she-cats headed towards me.
“Don’t mention it!” Lionpaw mewed, rushing to rejoin the battle.
Rosetail shouted out orders, and we all did our best to fend off the cats. With Smallear’s aid I had driven off the she-cats and was now facing a young tom who resembled the ShadowClan leader, Raggedstar. I recognized him from the Gatherings -- his name was Brokentail.
“Prepare to die!” he hissed in my ear, aiming his claws for my head. I spat at him and tried to defend myself.
It was then that it happened.
As I swung back to hit Brokentail on the muzzle with a well-aimed forepaw, I tripped over Bluepaw’s prey and found myself on the ground. Rolling away proved to no avail, and Brokentail was soon upon me.
I fought like I had never fought before, but he overpowered me even though I was seasons older than he. Before I knew I, he had his claws on my face. It was then that the sky darkened… and disappeared.
My beautiful blue eye was ruined.
I lunged, but missed terribly. He began to drag me off by the tail, and had Patchpelt not been there to drive him off I would never have been freed.
When I got to camp, I was greeted with much worry by Frogtail, my mother, and everyone else I had ever called a friend. When Sunstar learned what had happened he sighed and solemnly said it was time for a name change.
“One-eye,” he called, and it was done.
My sun eye wasn’t completely spared, so I was rendered useless with much sadness. I joined the elders that very day, and soon found that my hearing was affected as well. Brokentail, Brokentail… I hated that name for the rest of my life, and when he became leader I could barely stand it.
Eventually Smallear, Patchpelt, Rosetail, and the others joined me in the elders den. I found a little consolation in the fact that Brownstump had had his name changed as well; a badger clawed off his tail, thus leaving him as Halftail who could no longer climb trees. Bluepaw became Bluefur and then Bluestar, with Redtail as her deputy. Lionheart, Whitestorm, Tigerclaw, and all the rest took their places within our Clan. Firestar began his reign, the first leader to be born a kittypet. And all through this I became older and less able to see or hear, until finally I was completely deprived of these senses and I died a peaceful death of old age. Now I am in StarClan, and although my sky gaze has returned to me, I can never again use it for my Clan.
