Author’s Notes: I was re-reading TNP and this came to me. It was hinted at, but I don’t think this pairing was explored properly in the series.

The Love That Never Was
Rainwhisker’s POV
I can’t love her, he thought. She’s from a different Clan and I am loyal to my own. But every time he tried to block the image of the pretty she-cat out of his mind, it appeared clearer than before, her mottled dark brown pelt and her sparkling green eyes. Her words echoed in his head, the things she had said to him as they travelled to the Clans’ new home. Suddenly he was back in the mountains, sheltering in the Tribe’s cave and lying next to her. Her warm tongue rasped over his ears and he was so contented.
Rainwhisker shook his head. No, he thought, I don’t love her. I can’t love her. But I can’t last the rest of my life without her. He lifted his head, and yowled to the heavens,
“StarClan help me!” But nothing happened. No glorious vision of starry warriors telling him which path to follow, no prophecy, and most of all, no RiverClan she-cat, looking at him with love in her eyes and telling him everything would be all right. Only her name, burning into his mind, torturing him – Swallowtail.
Swallowtail’s POV
I should have been more careful. I should never have looked at him twice. He and I became friends on the Great Journey, and all the memories – us walking together, the night in the Tribe’s cave, the Gathering where we forgot ourselves – none of them should exist. We were foolish to think our relationship would last. We both knew that half-Clan relationships were forbidden, and against the warrior code.
I sighed and lay down, my head resting on my paws. One of my Clanmates came by and licked my ear.
“Are you all right? You seem depressed. That’s not like you.”
“I’m fine,” was my mumbled reply.
“Are you sure?” my friend asked again.
“Honestly, I’m ok.” I got up, flicked my tail and padded out of the camp. I needed some peace to myself. Only one cat was on my mind, and he would stay in my heart forever – Rainwhisker.
