“But why, Sandstorm, why?” Dustpelt’s amber eyes burned into Sandstorm’s fur.
“I love him.” Her voice shook slightly. She wasn’t sure if she was telling the truth.
“But really, do you?” Dustpelt pressed on.
“I…I don’t know.” Sandstorm dropped her gaze to the dusty ground, and she couldn’t meet her friend’s eyes. Dustpelt reached over to affectionately lick her ear, but she pulled away with a startled hiss, ears flattened to her skull. Her pale ginger pelt bristled with anger.
“He is my mate, Dustpelt,” she hissed. “I had kits with him.”
“Yes, and Tigerstar had kits with Goldenflower. Did he really love her? Enough to abandon her and go with that rogue,” Dustpelt reminded her.
“What are you trying to say?” was Sandstorm’s apprehensive reply.
“I’m trying to tell you that –” Dustpelt broke off as Firestar stalked up to them, his eyes full of anger and suspicion.
“Sandstorm, what are you doing?” he demanded.
“I’m talking to Dustpelt!” she replied angrily. “What does it look like?”
“Well,” Firestar continued, ignoring her, “Dustpelt has an apprentice to teach and they should be out training.”
“I have an apprentice too,” hissed Sandstorm. “So stop picking on Dustpelt!”
“Well, since you like each other so much, why don’t you both go out together?” spat Firestar. There was so much venom in his voice that Sandstorm was taken aback. But perhaps she was being unfair. After all, she and Firestar had been happy. Why should she go off with Dustpelt when Firestar had loved her and she had been loyal to him?
“Firestar, come back!” shouted Sandstorm. But Firestar just ignored her and walked into his den, ears flat, tail drooping. Sandstorm raced over and peered inside.
“Firestar?” Her voice wavered slightly.
“Go away, Sandstorm,” Firestar hissed rudely.
“But-”
“Dustpelt loves you, make him happy.”
“No. I love you, Firestar, and that will never change.” There was a long sigh, then Firestar emerged from the shadows, his dark green eyes dull with unhappiness.
“How could I ever doubt you, Sandstorm?” he bowed his head. “I was just in a bad mood. I…I’m not myself today. But what I say is true. Dustpelt loves you.”
Sandstorm felt a lump in her belly as cold as ice when she heard those three words. She loved Firestar, so much, but Dustpelt – well, they were just friends. She didn’t want to hurt either tom’s feelings.
