Squirrelflight was so proud of Brambleclaw. Her future mate was deputy! She padded up to congratulate him. "Well done Brambleclaw!" she purred. But he ignored her, as he waited for all the others to press in on him. He began to order the patrols, but he no longer did it with quiet authority. Turning to Spiderleg, he meowed, "I want you to take out a hunting patrol." Spderleg turned to the deputy. "But I was going to take Mousepaw out for some battle training. Brambleclaw spat, "I don't care! I'm deputy, and you'll follow my orders!" Spiderleg flinched, but compared to the new deputy, he was tiny. "Yes Brambleclaw." he mumbled. He padded off to chose the cats for his patrol. But Brambleclaw only hissed again. "I didn't tell you that you can choose who to take. I want you with Ashfur and Birchfall. Now go!" he hissed. Spiderleg bowed his head, and then went to fetch the cats Brambleclaw had named. Squirrelflight hissed in disgust. "Just because you're deputy now, that doesn't mean you can be rude to cats!" she growled. Brambleclaw turned on her. "Come on, you're going on patrol with me and Dustpelt. Lets go!" Squirrelflight spat, but followed the deputy out of camp. He told the others what to do as if they were stupid kits, and he acted as if he was leader, not just deputy. When Squirrelflight mentioned this, he waved his tail proudly. "I will be soon!" Squirrelflight pointedly turned her back on him as she went to look for prey. Spotting Ashfur, she padded over to him, brushing his flank. He purred, and the two hunted together.
******************Two Moons Later******************
It was the day after the Gathering when Graystripe had returned, and Firestar was picking the new deputy. The whole Clan sat in silence as Firestar yowled, "Graystripe will be the new deputy of ThunderClan!" Squirrelflight nodded in approval. She guessed that her father had seen the way Brambleclaw was treating the rest of the Clan. Ashfur padded up to her. "Hey Squirrelflight," he mewed affectionatly. "Do you want to go hunting?" Squirrelflight purred. "Sure." she meowed. Brambleclaw stalked up to them. "Did I say you could leave camp?" he hissed. Ever since Squirrelflight had begun hanging around Ashfur, he had treated the Clan leaders duaghter like dirt. "If I'm not mistaken," hissed Squirrelflight in disgust. "Graystripe is deputy now." The gray tom padded up to them. "You two are welcome to go out hunting," he purred. "Make sure you bring back lots of fresh-kill! The Clan needs it!" With a last glance at Brambleclaw, she and Ashfur padded out of camp, their fur touching.
*******************One year later*********************
It had been a year since then, and Squirrelflight had just had Ashfur's kits. Smokekit and Gingerkit were replicas of their parents, who looked at them with pride. Brambleclaw stalked into the nursery, shouldering Ashfur out of the way. He hissed at Ashfur, and Squirrelflight defended her mate by spitting, "If you're just here to annoy us, then you can leave!" She gestured her tail to the nursery entrance. But Brambleclaw stayed. He spat in Ashfur's face. "You stole my mate! I will never forgive you!" But it was Squirrelflight who answered. "You see Brambleclaw? This is why I hate you."
