Mist hung heavily in the air as a brown tabby she-cat padded warily through an unfamiliar forest. She walked slowly, watching for any danger lurking in every shadow. Where am I? How did I get here? She scented the air. Almost immediately, a familiar scent hit the top of her mouth. She spun around, her fur bristling with shock. Skywatcher! “Greetings, Leafstar. I’m glad you came. I have a message for you.” The dark gray tom’s blue eyes glinted in the pale moonlight. “Come.” He turned around, not glancing back to see if Leafstar followed. Warily, she followed Skywatcher.
They ran through the forest as if though the wind carried their paws. Suddenly, they broke into a clearing filled with cats. The full moon glimmered over the pelts of more cats than Leafstar ever saw in her life. Skywatcher pointed his tail to a tree, where four cats stood, watching the other cats. “Look.” As she watched, she saw a familiar cat she thought she would never see again lift his head and yowl, “Cats of all clans, welcome. We are brought together by the full moon.” His flame colored pelt shimmered, covered with silver streaks from light of the full moon. “Firestar!” Leafstar gasped. “Skywather, why have you brought me here?” Skywatcher gazed back at her, his eyes filled with sorrow. “SkyClan is in grave danger.” Leafstar stared at Skywatcher as his eyes stared at nothing. “Sky must join thunder, wind, river and shadow. You must follow rock if you are to survive.” Skywatcher and the vision vanished, and Leafstar plunged into nothingness.
Leafstar woke with a start. The prophecy still hung heavily in her mind. She stretched and climbed out of her den. She froze as a voice whispered in her ear. “Sky must join thunder, wind, river, and shadow. You must follow rock if you are to survive.” She shivered with fear.
Leafstar shook her feelings off. Her clan had to come first. She couldn’t just sit down and think about it. First she had to make sure the clan was okay. She surveyed the camp. She saw the apprentice, Rockpaw, soon to be a warrior, pad after his mentor, Cherrytail. A shiver ran down her spine. Rockpaw! He must be the one to lead us. At that moment, a terrible howling split the air. Dogs!
The dogs ran straight into the camp. The warriors immediately started to attack the invaders. Leafstar joined in the fight. As she fought, she spotted a dog crouched over her former apprentice, Sparrowpelt. His body was coved in scratches, and his attempts to escape were growing weaker.
“No!” She yowled as she leapt on the dog. She dug her claws deep into its fur. The dog howled in pain. It shook Leafstar off and ran away from the camp. She scrambled to Sparrowpelt. His eyes were filled with pain. Blood poured out of a wound on his throat. “Goodbye, Leafstar,” he rasped. “No!” she yowled, but it was too late. He sighed and his eyes glazed over. Leafstar pressed her nose into his fur, grief crashing over her. As she lifted her head, she saw her clan growing weaker with every movement. “Retreat!” She yowled. “Go to the barn where the rats used to live!” Instantly the clan started climbing the rocks and they quickly ran in the direction of the barn. Leafstar looked into the camp one last time. The dogs have settled in the caves, leaving the dead cats lying on the ground. Rest safely with StarClan, she prayed as she followed her clan to the barn.
CHAPTER 1
Rockpaw stared into the camp, his eyes wide with shock. Dead cats’ bodies covered the ground. The dogs had made their way into the caves. A shiver ran down his spine. Please. StarClan! Let all the cats have escaped! “C’mon, Rockpaw! We have to get to the barn and see if the clan is okay.” Rockpaw looked up to see his mentor, Cherrytail, standing next to him. “There’s nothing we can do except to see if the clan is safe.” Rockpaw sighed. “Okay.” He murmured as he followed Cherrytail to the old rat barn.
As he padded through the entrance to the barn, he was surprised how battered his clanmates were. Most were sleeping, wounds covering their bodies. Echosong, SkyClan’s medicine cat, was crouched over Mintkit and Sagekit, Petalnose’s two kits.
“Were the kits hurt?” Rockpaw asked. “No, thank StarClan. They’re just in shock.” Echosong replied, not looking up. “Is there anything I can do to help?” Rockpaw asked her. She seemed very busy, and she could do with some help. “Yes. Can you go find some thyme? There’s some growing across this field, near the edge of the woods.” “Sure,” Rockpaw replied.
He turned around to leave when he heard Leafstar mew something urgently to Echosong. “Echosong, I need to talk to you. I had a dream from StarClan.” Rockpaw’s ears pricked with interest. Then he remembered that he had promised Echosong that he would get her thyme. Reluctantly, he walked out of the barn in search of some thyme for Echosong.
As he scanned the ground, he thought he heard someone call his name. “Rockpaw, come here. Do not be afraid.” He whipped around to see a faintly familiar gray cat looking down at him. He had the scent of SkyClan, yet he didn’t recognize the old cat. “You must listen carefully, for this will affect the future of your clan. You-”
“Rockpaw! Did you find the thyme?” Echosong’s voice called out of the barn. “Not yet, but I will.” He replied. He turned around to talk to the cat, but he had disappeared. Disappointed, he continued looking for the thyme.
